Here are my notes for the video in case you don't have time to watch the whole thing/want to revise quickly: Core Question 1: Summary (1f) Summary must be: Written in 3rd person Objective Formal Concise Identify your point then number them (7-8 points should suffice) in the order in which you plan to include them in your summary. Use a range of 7 to 8 ideas from the text. Reword where appropriate, but scientific terms, technical terms, geographic locations and jargon are fine to keep. To gain the writing marks you need: A suitable style Sophisticated discourse markers Ambitious Vocab More complex sentence structures to group multiple ideas together/ Question walkthrough Text B will always be non-fiction ANNOTATE - underline, highlight, and number Spend between 30-35 minutes on this question. Core Question 2: Writer’s Effect (2d) Use the zoom-in technique - zoom in on a specific powerful word/phrase. Explore the explicit meaning first before analysing the heck out of it - what the image means in its entirety. After exploring explicit meaning, use this as a springboard to explore the implicit. This is where you will get most of your marks. Question walkthrough: You MUST PAY ATTENTION TO THE INFORMATION GIVEN IN THE BULLET POINTS. Use topic sentences: “The overall effect of the language creates an image of…” Use abstract nouns. ANNOTATE - underline key phrases and pencil in a few notes. Useful phrases to include: ‘The overall effect of the language creates an image of…’ ‘Firstly/Secondly/Thirdly etc’ ‘The writer describes’ ‘Refers’ Core Question 3 - Extended Writing Top tips: Make sure you know all of the 8 text types and their features: Journal - reflective, personal tone; emotive language Magazine Article - depending on audience, might have catchy headline and more informal tone/register Newspaper report - headlines, who what where when how Formal Report - Formal Letter Informal letter Interview Speech Don’t forget you’re being asked to assume a role. The register, vocabulary, tone, and style of writing should reflect the character you’ve been asked to assume. Bullet points 1/2 are usually explicit/straightforward, Bullet point 3 requires inference/not so easy. Do 3 paragraphs full of some text type - maybe start with a short introduction to establish the voice of the character. Have a range of ideas across all 3 paragraphs. Develop/infer across ALL 3 BULLET POINTS Use a range of ARIPEFOREST techniques: Alliteration Repetition Imperatives Pronouns Emotive language Facts Opinions Rhetorical questions Exaggeration Statistics Triplets Questions you should ask yourself: What’s the text type? What’s the audience? What’s the purpose? Explore the character’s thoughts and feelings. When annotating, note down the main ideas and your inference. Spend 40-45 minutes on this question, and aim to cover 2 to 2 and a half pages.

lOVE YOUR CONTENT, THE MOST HANDY TEACHER IN ENGLISH EVERRR. ALSO IDK IF U EVER HAD SOMEONE CALL YOU JIM HALPERT FROM THE OFFICE BUT YOU LOOK A LOT LIKE HIM. ANYWAYS HOPE YOU HAVING A GOOD DAY , THANKS FOR HELPING OUT SO MUCH.
I'm writing my exams in about 7 days and your videos are of great help.I thank you for having the generosity of sharing your expansion of knowledge on first language english. : )
Thank you so much for uploading this video sir 😊 English isn’t my first language (I’m from Pakistan) and I switched schools in November and THATS when I started first language English and I was taking second language before. My first exam for English is on Wednesday and I’ve been binge watching your videos for the past 40 minutes. I already feel so much more comfortable in regards to the exam. I hope you have a great day. P.s could you pls tell me when I would know to use a comma? It’s the one thing I always mess up in
Okay so first of all like I said in the comment, English is not my first language so sometimes I do word things incorrectly. However, I used the term binge watching because I had been watching the shorter videos. Not the long ones. Also, the point of this channel is for people to come and learn important skills or develop their skills for the exam. I left a comment to show my appreciation for the teacher and not for u to reply and act as if ur the reincarnation of Einstein himself. You also have the passive aggressiveness of a tween so I suggest you go to sleep or smth since it’s clearly past your bed time. ❤️❤️
Okay so idk why it’s showing me ur second reply on email but not here but I just wanted to say that I literally never assumed u were from the UK, do I don’t know wth that was about. Apart from that I said u were sleep deprived because of ur irrational annoyance at me not correctly using the word binge watching if u don’t even know the context behind it. Also u seem annoyingly narcissistic and proud because u take sciences or smth ? Because u unnecessarily brought up science even tho it had nothing to do w my original comment. Stop trying to act like I’m dumb and ur smart, because In the end ur immaturity and aggression towards someone u don’t even know speaks volumes. If ur giving an exam I hope it goes well honestly, and that if ur aggression is just due to mood swings or whatever I hope it gets better.
tomorrow is my paper 1 of English first language i was not at all prepared for it until i came across your video this is not just useful for the 11th grade but also useful for the 9th graders this was soo helpful thank you so much
@@bonzopippinpaddleopsicopolis i didnt mean it that way. I have been watching him from like the past 2 years and its common of him to take such breaks of like a month or two.
Sir, I didnt really understand writer's effect that much but other than that your teaching is phenomenal but if u could help me with the writer's effect that would be much appreciated. Edit: How do I also know what questions are writer's effect?
Hey! Sir i have been following ur channel for quite a long time and i still got a year for my english caie. I got caies of other subjects this month but once i m done with it i'll focus on english. Can u give me a few tips for improving my english such as books and their names over the year as ik i m not really good at english as my grade is usually around B at school. Keep up the good work!!
hi! if it's not a problem could you give me a bit of feedback on my descriptive writing piece, i think it's a little narrative at times and i have the exam in a few days, the prompt is describe the scene before and as a theatrical production begins - The dressing room - a kaleidoscope of colour and light. A cacophony of sound - singing, crying, arguing, laughing. Controlled chaos. All types of costumes, from hot pink frocks and sequined vests to blue feather boas, were frantically being passed around by tense directors as they hollered: “Costume 51 is ironed and ready! Costume 51, come pick it up!”. Combining with the scents of stage makeup and bitter iced coffee, the pungent stench of sweat polluted the air that ventilated the dressing room through the ancient air-conditioner. The gleam of yellow bulb lights bordered the lengthy mirror which was the entire back wall, giving the place an overbearing brightness. A member of the ensemble, dressed from head to toe in a glittery rose gold bodysuit, breathed in deeply, her teeth chattering as if it was 0 degrees celsius inside the room; but in reality, the boiling kettle of bodies made the room feel as hot as the inside of an erupting volcano. Her voice quivering, the girl quietly tried to warm up; she sang: "do-re-mi-fa-so-la..." one last time before the show began, but was quickly interrupted by panicked tears trickling down her cheeks, glistening like diamonds. As quickly as the tears came, though, they went. A makeup artist rushed toward the first-timer in exasperation as she muttered something inaudible under her breath; she frustratedly dabbed at the girl’s under-eyes, powder puff in hand, to mask her nervousness. On the other side of the room, a calm and collected actor managed to confidently complete his “do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do” as he touched up his silvery-blue eyeshadow before excitedly striking up a chat with his fellow experienced cast members. Unlike the ensemble, who, when together, resembled a plethora of shimmering stars in their identical glittery bodysuits, each protagonist told a completely different story; one man wearing a bold pink frock (costume 51), and an equally pink curly wig stood next to a woman with no eyes - at least, no visible eyes. Half her face was covered by a deep purple mesh witch hat, and all one could see was her pitch black lips; but the malevolent cackles the audience was about to hear from the witch would undoubtedly make up for her mysterious masked face. The show was about to start. Tensions running high. No time left! Beads of perspiration formed on the directors’ foreheads as the velvety, sumptuous maroon curtains slowly revealed the audience before them. A ripple of claps echoed through the auditorium, cueing the ensemble to elegantly prance onstage to the rich, layered harmonies of soaring violin melodies and intricate piano runs. In unison, the 4 directors let out a relieved sigh. Moments later, the protagonists wished each other a final “break a leg”, and off they went to make this the show of a lifetime.
Is there any predictions of what type of writing may come up in paper 1 question 3 and in paper 2 section A? Also I have seen that the report writing didn't come up in both the 2022 and 2021 papers, is there a possibility it would appear or should I focus more on other types of writings?
. Candidates should spend approximately 15 minutes reading the texts. ( this is from syllabus) Does this mean that we will get 15 minutes before the exam ?
if your overview isnt the same as the mark scheme, will you lose marks? for example if the writers effect at 29:31 is different mark scheme (which it is, that the paragraph creates a humorous / (over) dramatic picture of the father trying to manage his drink at the same time as riding his bicycle. ) which is very different from the ones shown in the video.
