You’re right about there being no visible water bodies in IGI 1, but if you go to the level screen and click Trainyard (Mission 1), the description will read, ‘Small coastline trainyard’, which means it’s located near a sea or an ocean. If someone has the patience to explore that endless terrain on their map computer, they might find water.
Finding the Bomb is a nighttime mission. We don’t see the sky but we can infer it’s night because it takes place immediately after Nuclear Infiltration, which happens at dusk/sunset. After Mission 13, there is a cutscene where Captain Harrison tells Noguchi and Skinner to accompany Jones and search for the entrance to the underground tunnel. There was a sense of urgency to find and defuse the bomb, so they wouldn’t have waited until daylight. 🙂
