Thanks for making this video! I was just about to thrown mine out when it died after a power surge. The power start you recommended worked like a charm! I connected mine to the capacitor.
Thanks for sharing this video. After having my 3.5 cu ft unit, my power and run lights were coming on, but no freezing occurred. Found your video, opened up the relay and saw my ceramic disk was broken. Found a reasonably priced replacement. Installed it, and now running. The feeezer lives again! Thanks.
Thank you so much Donald. My freezer went out about 2 weeks ago and I went out and bought another one. On Sunday I decided to do a Google search and to my surprise, we have the exact same model. So I decided to order the QP2-4.7 from Amazon. I purchased 2 of them for $7.50. I received them today and it was installed at 630 PM. By 9 PM, the freezer has frost on the sides. I am elated to have a spare freezer. Thanks again
THANK YOU!! After numerous attempts on google to find out how to fix my freezer, I decided to search on RU-vid instead. Your video has helped tremendously!! My freezer is back up and running. :)
I had mine just die. I watched your video and removed the relay. Mine was not cracked but on one of the disk sides where it was making contact look burnt. So I moved the burn side away from the connection and Bam working once again. Thanks!
@@donaldlgilbertjr7923 I just talked with with my father who has been in HAVC for 30 years and he told he QP2-4.7 Is the part number and G12 Is a date code.
Hi. I have the same thing, it was not cracked but burnt and the blue thing connector is burnt too. Idk what its called, do u know what is it and can i buy it at amazon too? Thanks!
I have the exact same freezer. This helped me a ton! I had a bad relay AND overload protector. Broken ceramic disc and overload protector was charred and crumbling. Put 3 'n 1 on and it fixed the problem right away. Part I used was the Supco URCO410 "Universal 3 'n 1 Start - Relay Overload Start Capacitor." $20 at local distributor.
Dude.. thanks for that video... almost i thru out my freezer which is same as yours... i found my relay was broken also and i just ordered - thanks to your video!!! thumbs up bro..
Oh my goodness! I want to thank you so much for making this video! It was exactly what was wrong with our Igloo 3.5. Our relay was just a little tougher to get to but when I removed it, it shook like maracas lol. I opened it up and the ceramic disc was broken in 3 pieces. I've got a replacement one ordered and on the way You saved me a ton (except for my thawed out goodies lol) thank you again I truely appreciate it! Angela B
@@billcarver5453 I ordered it off of eBay, just put in Igloo Start Relay in the search engine. I looked thru my old purchases but it was so long ago it wouldn't show up. Look at your old relay and do some searching on google. You'll find it :)
This seems like a fantastic instructional. My igloo, exact same model as this one, has the same problem. I just opened a ticket with them to see if they have an extended manufacturer warranty, since free repair/replacement > dropping any cash on it, but if that falls through I will absolutely try this...and maybe even bug you with questions if I get stuck! Seems simple enough. I'd try this method first, but warranties are tricky, and one tool mark on a screw to the access panel could screw (haha) me over in that department. Fingers crossed.
Good Luck. If they don't fix it, you may only need to buy the relay part rather than go with the entire 3-n-1 unit as I did. I have spoken to a few people that bought a pack of them on eBay to have as spares. I hope you get it going again. Cheap parts for the throw away society.
Neighbor had the exact same Igloo freezer when it broke under warranty. She got a 100% refund from Sam's Club and asked me if I wanted the broken freezer for free. I replaced the start relay, which had a broken ceramic disk. $10 dollars later I had a working ice cold 5.1 cu Ft freezer ... thx for your video.
Sam's refunded my money as well since I had purchased the warranty. I have been told by others to have a few of those relays handy as they seem to fail frequently. Glad it all worked for you.
Thank you for the info to fix our freezer and parts are ordered. Which during this covid-19 stuff wasn't fun to have happen. Awesome and Helpful video. Mine was cracked but it's working for now just flipped it around.
Thank you, i had same problem, went inside of it found the disk it was not broken but slightly burned on one side, flipped it around as another youtuber said and vuala it worked. Gives me time to order another disk before it goes bad. Thank you very much you saved me alot of money in meat. LoL
This was HUGE. I was looking for a replacement part but nothing on the part number that was on the side of my PCT relay. Your video help me to find a substitute. Thank You.
@@donaldlgilbertjr7923 don’t know yet I ordered the part on eBay Even that part in my freezer doesn’t look broke but the freezer does you said so if this didn’t work it will be the compressor then I’ll buy a new one
I just took the relay apart. Cleaned the ceramic disc and turned it to where it made contact, and it’s running! The disc had a slight crack and was not actually broken Thanks!
I'm glad that turning the disc has helped in your situation. Be aware that most likely that crack will continue and you will need to replace the ceramic or the relay. Might be a good idea to have one around the house for just such a moment.
Great video. Mine just started. Comes on for a few seconds and then shuts off but the power and the run lights are on. Will this part also work for the FRF470?
This repair worked for me. However mine had a little twist. The disc inside was perfectly intact. However, checking the resistance, it was at 18K Ohms. I was able to get a replacement part (same as OEM) for $5.20 on Amazon with free delivery.
So mine powers on and a very low hum is heard. After about 15 seconds there is a click and the hum stops. I unplug it and then after about 3 or minutes there is a click. I plug it back in and the same. This is a brand new machine that was damaged in shipping with a dent next to the control panel. Any Ideas?
Hi, Donald thank you so much for doing this and reaching out to help others. You seem to be quite techy. I checked the ceramic disc and it's still intact. Before I opened and checked if the ceramic disk was broken the run light was not coming on. after opening up the plastic housing it sits in and closing it up again the run light came back on. I thought praise God it's working but unfortunately it's not working and freezing. I also don't hear the motor running at all. Ant idea on what I can do or what the issue might still be?
If you don't hear the "CLICK" when the freezer tries to come on, your problem might be in the compressor, or as you stated in another post, you may have pulled a wire off of something. If you only removed the Relay and the Overload protector, there aren't many wires to get crossed up. It sounds like when you took the ceramic disk out and moved it to a new position that you now got power to transfer through part of it. You might still have a bad disk and need to replace the relay anyway. It might be worth your effort to buy the relay and try it, because chances are, a new freezer is going to have the same part and it might fail someday. Best of luck. It can be frustrating.
Mr. Gilbert I have a 5.1 cubic feet household freestanding igloo freezer just like yours I remove the black protective cover which exposed the relay relay button is Charred on one side that is making a clicking noise the green run light is on but no freezing is occurring im looking for a part that will hold more voltage/ Ohms like the supco power start 3 in 1 relay but don't no the difference between the ultimate power start or the one in your video
I have never looked at the performance specifications on the Supco units by comparison. I know the Hard Start unit that I selected was rated for a much larger compressor than that of this small freezer. I would imagine that any of the Hard Start/Power Start/3-n-1 units would all exceed the requirements of our freezer. I think the motor was only a 1/3 hp unit. You could just replace the relay, but I fear that the same condition would be back very soon. That's why I made the choice to get the Supco unit. Good Luck
Thank you so much for this video! We were able to identify exactly that problem, get the Supco part and get running again, unfortunately about three months later it died again. We tried another part in a different brand and nothing. Do you have any advice? We're about to just get a new freezer but I feel like it's a simple fix I'm too stupid to figure out.
I wish I had an idea as to what may have gone wrong. Mine has continued with the Supco unit for almost a year. I did just work on a neighbor's freezer that had the bad relay and when I put in the new unit, it wouldn't power on, but, it turned out that his compressor had gone bad. I would hate to think that your compressor quit, but it could be possible. These systems are pretty basic. Thermostat, Relay, Circuit Breaker (the other pin above the relay), Compressor. I wish you luck in your repair, if you go in that direction.
I decided to not use my capacitor. There were two extra wires on my Supco Hard Start unit that would have allowed me to connect the capacitor if I wanted. I just chose not to.
My freezer had a fuse, which I tested first. The next component in the system was the relay. When I took it off, I could hear the ceramic disc pieces inside. It sounded like a mini maraca. Then when I opened it, the pieces all fell out.
I have my freezer for 2 years and today 2020 4:29 p.m. New York City Bronx New York the ice was melting can you tell me why help me why please the greenlight the yellow light goes on
I am not an authorized repairman. I only know that the relay on mine was bad. If your relay is bad, and the green light is on, then either the relay or the compressor is bad. The green light is hooked to the thermostat, so the freezer is trying to turn on. Good Luck
Ok I checked mine cause it's not getting cold but I pulled that relay out and it's still all together should I still replace it im attempting to fix this on my own cause I deff don't have much money so any advice would be great.
If you can't hear the compressor turning on when the GREEN LIGHT is lit on the front, then it's either the relay or the compressor. If you turn the thermostat all the way to the coldest setting and the GREEN LIGHT never comes on, then your thermostat has gone bad. The relay can be found on ebay or Amazon for under $10 in most cases if you don't want to use the power start unit, which is $15 to $20. I hope you can get it going and don't have a bad compressor... if that's the case, then there is no reason to repair it. Good Luck
@@donaldlgilbertjr7923 I just ordered a new relay for 5.99 so let hope this works but won't find out till my order gets here on the 18 so I'll let you know. If I get it working again ur video was such a help though.
@@selinamiller1058 , I do hope that the relay fixes the problem. I don't recall my compressor ever getting hot, so I am not sure what that issue might be. I don't want to speculate at this time if your compressor has gone bad. Good Luck
That's a difficult question to answer. I have seen the disc be intact yet still be bad. I would say to try the start relay, which are listed on Amazon for around $12 to verify the health of your compressor. That's the only way I know to test the compressor.
The green lamp only comes on when the thermostat is active. At that point, the compressor should be running. If the green lamp is on and the compressor is NOT running, then most likely the relay has gone bad... or worst case, the compressor has failed. The temperature knob should be started in the half way position. That is plenty cold for the freezer. Good Luck.
@@juniormiller6149 The motor protector connects to the upper pin on my motor. If you imagine a triangle, my upper pin has the motor protector. As for your other question about the black wire not connected to the compressor, I'm not sure what you mean as all of my wires are used and connected to either the thermostat wires (Black and White) or to the posts of the compressor (the lower pins). Good Luck
I just got an igloo chest freezer second hand today. I've had several freezers. Searching google people usually tell you to set it at a little less than half way. This igloo was at MAX when I got it. I put it in the middle (4), like the manual said. It's been like 6 hours and the freezer isn't freezing yet. In fact, there's water dripping on the sides. Just wondering what number you have yours set at. I'll probably have to start moving it towards max tomorrow, but all my other freezers work great at the middle setting or less. EDIT: At exactly 4:00 I see your front panel and it's set at 4 too. So if mine isn't cold by tomorrow, it's broken. It's cool, but not even fridge level yet, but it's definitely not cold enough to freeze yet.
@@donaldlgilbertjr7923 Thanks. After 3 days of messing with it I came to the conclusion that it was busted. I even added that 3 N 1 Hard Starter thing and didn't help. Luckily someone was selling the exact same Igloo freezer for $40 so I bought another one. Prob throw the other one away.
@@donaldlgilbertjr7923 One quick question though. Your "Run" light doesn't stay on all the time right? Mine turns off, I guess when it's cold enough and the compressor isn't running. I was concerned cuz the Run light wasn't on when I bought it, but it seemed to be working. I keep the new one at 4 and it's cold enough to freeze things over.
@@jaymartinson3236 Mine was broken. It was unfortunate, but I got it for free. I got another used one for $40 that got cold within 2 hours, so now I know what it's suppose to be like.
50 bucks for a relay? WOW ! I only paid 119 dollars for the unit which is an igloo as well. I can't find my receipt and it's less than a year smh and I bought it at a large " discount " place as well. Mine I only found wasn't working because my food started spoiling smh. Mine keeps having this clicking noise, did yours? I'm hearing some may be the thermostat.
Yes, mine would click at first, then a few seconds later would click again when it turned off. After 30 seconds or so, another click to attempt to turn on, then a second click when it quit. The cycle just continued.
Mine isn’t keeping food frozen in the center. I put already frozen food in the middle and it thawed out! This is junk, I thought igloo was a good brand but I guess they aren’t as good as they used to be. Don’t buy this freezer!
@@laurenandreas5950 , mine does very well at keeping everything cold. My only issue was that relay, and now that it is replaced, I hope to get many more years from mine. Sorry yours isn't performing as well as others.
Mine is an igloo but smaller 3.6 cu ft. It doesn't have a capacitor that I can see. I pulled the relay switch out and the ceramic disc is intact but did notice burn marks on the plastic clips of the back cover that aligns with the metal terminals. It's a backward RU A1H8 Cub I gel SA (white) TY 110 115 V 3012-5A. I suspects it's this part because when it didn't freeze, the outlet had blown a fuse. Replacing the breaker fuse the indicator lights red & green are on but still no freezing. What do you think? Could it be this switch even if the ceramic disc is not broken?
If the Green and Red lights are on, then the temperature selector switch (Thermostat) is working. My ceramic disc was burnt as well. Most likely, that is the issue. You could try to find that part number by searching Google or ebay. The TY 110 115 V 3012 5A looks like it means it is a 110 to 115 volt 5 Amp unit. Not sure what the 3012 means. You want to look up the RU number. RU is the company that makes it. I hope you have some luck fixing it. If you can't find the original pieces, that 3 in 1 start pack will fix it like the one I put in. Good Luck.
Sorry for the delay. I wasn't receiving notifications for some reason. The relay pulls off of the two pins. I needed to use a small flat blade screwdriver to get it started. Then it popped off.
I am not sure which part you are trying to put on. You will want to leave the White surge protector in place and only remove the Black relay. Are you using a Power Start unit like I did?
@@detricechambers5506 I found it easier when I put a mirror inside the unit to see the two small pins to slide the wires onto the compressor. I tried to video that part, and it was too blurry to see anything. The 3-n-1 should have instructions. I just installed the 3 in 1 in my freezer that's exactly the same as yours. My question is does the freezer cycle on and off or does it continuously run? i have the dial set to 1
@@Datsun7705 I didn't do anything to make it cycle. I just installed the 3-n-1 and it started working again. It is possible that your thermostat went bad. I don't work on these as a profession. So I really can't diagnose what might be going on with yours. I wish I could be more help to you.
@@donaldlgilbertjr7923 i finally figured out that i had to let my freezer run for a while because with all the food i have in it, it takes a while to bring the temp down. but thank you for posting the video on wiring the 3 in 1.
I would not be able to answer your question properly without seeing the instructions from Supco for the 3n1. Mine was a Hard Start model from Supco, so the wiring might be different. I just followed the instructions that were with the Supco packaging. If you don't have the instructions, I believe they are on the website for Supco as well. Good Luck.
Donald L Gilbert Jr I can’t post a picture of it but I can tell you what the wires mean The red wire is for run white wire is for start one black is common and the other two black is power. I hope your able to help me figure this out. Thank you in advance also the Compressor on my freezer only has two prongs coming off of it.
@@quinster835 Your compressor must have three pins. If you only removed the bad relay, then you left the TOP pin connected to the Overload Protector. It's a separate part from the relay. That's where the BLACK goes. RED and WHITE go on the two other pins that are side by side. The Supco 3n1 didn't have an instruction sheet with it?
Donald L Gilbert Jr what about the two black wires on the other side of the 3 in 1 where would I connect those to? The package came with a diagram on it but doesn’t say where to plug the wires in only what the wires do.
