While I've known the piano concertos for years this Symphony is new to me. Brull was a great friend of Brahms who admired his music. Brull has got a little lost in his shadow, but should be known as a conposer in his own right and not just as a footnote in Brahm's history. A fine Symphony.

A revisit finds the work as compelling as my first listen.

Unlike many symphonies, in this one the last movement is the best, opening Molto moderato with a mournful Jewish melody that gives me chills up and down the spine, and continuing with the energetic Allegro assai (with reminiscences of the opening section). The first movement is well-done while the inner movements are on the lighter side. Bravo, Brull.

This is a wonderful symphony from a composer I hadn't heard of (thanks Richard Wagner). This stands up very well to the works of the time. Thank you for posting this!

Kuhlau, I have once again overlooked one of your suggestions, to my loss. Another lovely piece of music by an unsung master. (No pun intended) Thank you! I shall be looking into more of Brull's works.

Brull is like an induce of fresh stimulus to our aesthetic sense. He is good. And, then I stand in awe at his and works of all other composers as well and what without them this world would be a blank raggedy canvas.

Powerful Symphony: features a wonderful, optimistic scherzo, and a beautiful, tuneful, and colorful fourth movement ! Lovely work! Look forward to other works.

So we read from the comments that he was "like" Brahms. He was Brahms's friend, but Brahms is Brahms, a genius by any sense, no matter what he composed. This is still a fine symphony that should be heard, somewhere.

The sole Major work of Brühl unavailable on YT or Spotify is violin concerto op 41. I guess there is only one performance commercially available (Malta Phylarmonic orchestra conducted by Michael Laus). Could you please consider uploading or I'd it restricted by Cameo? Thanks much for your help.

It was published in 1877. The notes to the recording say "completed around 1880" but (1880) still doesn't follow. At most one can say it was composed at -some- point by 1877 (maybe revised later but haven't heard about that.)

A good sense of form, melodic invention, and dramatic flow make this elegant, genteel symphony quite engaging. Brull and Brahms were good friends, and I could think of this work as "Brahms lite", not sharing his genius or emotional heft, but certainly his charm. This performance seems fine, but the recording could be better.

Even curiouser that Brahms was so cruel to young Hans Rott - his Symphony in E Major is much finer. Still, this is pleasant too.
