Fix a common Ignition Switch Failure for the cost of a cotter pin. The ignition key will turn only part way and car will not start. Key stops at the number one position and stops. 2004 Volvo V70
Dear P Lockin, All i can say is simply brilliant!!! My 240 lock cylinder works fine, but i will disable the steering lock anyway.I remember the days before all the cars had no steering locks, and other junk they build into cars which made them easier to repair without opening your wallet to the repair shop. Thank you for your tutorial; people like you make for a better world!! Bruce the swimmer New Rochelle N.Y.
I'm from African, this is standard procedure lol. I currently have the same issue with my XC90, and will definitely try this. I was thinking of this idea earlier, and so so glad I found out someone already tried it. Great video.
Pete: Thank you so much for posting this video. I had the exact same problem on my '07 XC 70 and your fix video solved the problem. Like the guy below, I also bought a dremel to take care of the polished screws holding the switch to the steering column and now have that for my tool set!!! and saved a bunch of $ at the dealership. Thanks so much.
Ryan, I too have an 07 xc70. I performed the fix and the key can rotate through all positions now, but I'm getting a different warning for ignition failure. The car won't do anything in position 3. Doesn't sound like you did, but thought I would check. I'm being told its a security/theft diagnostic reading . . . guessing that relates to the fact that the steering wheel lock is permanently pressed in.
This is awesome. Pulled switch and found this is the problem. I dis not have a grinder, so I used a chisel and tapped at perimeter of screw to get it turning. THen a little fiddling with pliers and fingers and got them out. Now working on your fix. Thank you so much. Saved me so much time and money.
very good cheap fix , after taking the key barrel locked it started working fine but I'm going to use your fix so it can't happen again ,many thanks bought a dremmel to do the job on the screw heads so now I have a dremmel and the stealership doesn't have my money
Hello Mr Lockin...I just watched this video. I have a 2004 V70 Volvo. I was wondering if you noticed anything odd about trying to start the car and turning off the car before it actually go to the point of not working.
Just lower the steering wheel and telescope it outward. You should have enough clearance to get the plastic cover off. This is a 2004 V70. Not sure about your model.
Does the problem originate in the lock barrel or the ignition switch? If I wanted to replace a part to keep the steering wheel locking in tact which part would I replace? Thanks so much great video!
Pete, I performed the fix described above and this freed it up so that I can turn it to all positions, but now I'm getting an error message with says something like "ignition failure - try starting again". My mechanic ran a diagnostic on it and he says it appears the reason it won't start is a security feature. Thoughts on this?
This happens usually when we force to turn the key while the steering wheel is locked. Always spring back the steering wheel when it's locked, while turning the key in the ignition like at 1:20 here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IGoPMcV1JaM.html
You are giving advice to modify a critical part of the ignition to save a few buck?? Let's hope the damaged ignition does not decide to jam up while you are driving.
STUPID VIDEO...YOU MUST PUT OIL!!! Put oil WD40 and turn the key on /off severel times to lubrificat the gears inside. Don't have to destroy the ignition...
@@plocklin9234 I just took one out of a xc90 with same problem. I just soak wd40 down past the stem you are holding down and kept working the lock and it is turning fine now.
