I know you're going to think, "no way am I doing this", but here goes. This worked for me, and was recommended by a locksmith. Put the key in and take a pair of pliers and hold firmly at the base of the key, and force the key to turn through positions 1, 2 and 3, after heavily lubricating the ignition switch. Believe it or not, my car turned on, it went back into position 2, and I used the pliers to turn it all the way back into position 1. The car has been turning on and off and the ignition has been working as normal for hundreds of stop-start cycles for the last couple of months. I did replace the ignition lock mechanism, the device that you indicated can be used to turn the car on and off with a flathead screwdriver. My difficulty appeared to be the actual key tumbler itself, and the key was getting stuck in position 1 and 2, and impossible to remove the key from the ignition at different times. I tried everything, and read on a Volvo fForum the comment from the locksmith about forcing the key through with a pair of pliers held at the base of the key. My heart was racing when I did it because I thought for sure it was going to break the key off and I was going to end up in a worse situation. So, I'm offering you that as an idea to try because if you're thinking about replacing that key tumbler, or you're in a desperate situation like you were, and you don't have the opportunity to do what you've demonstrated there, which is sort of a bypass in a way, then this trick that I found is working for me. No problems since I did this.

Did the dremel trick. Worked like a charm. Only needs to work for a week until the new ignition lock arrives.

After lowering the plate when you turn off the car then remove the key the steering wheel dies not lock, which is okay. Ended removing the plate goes into position II and III.

is it welded shut, or something? i had this issue with my s60 this morning. i work next door to an auto shop. this will be my next move cause I am too poor. i can't wait to swing the magic metal plate door open. i need a permanent fix. the way i have to start it now is a pita and I am afraid it will just cause more damage over time
