I frequently keep a sharpie on hand to immediately mark the old part. Before i set in on a bench or anything. It's so easy to get mixed up. Especially with used dirtier parts. I'm glad Kaleb is on board as a helper/ learner. He really adds a lot to the videos. Great video. Big fan.

Great job. I don't think I need to tell you not to sweat the goof-ups because they're more common than people are willing to admit. Frustration gets the best of me, too. It may take a bit longer than I like, but I have to step back or away when I start feeling upset and organize parts I'm removing. Love the outtakes. When I was little I connected two 9 volt batteries together to play with. They were almost dead so they didn't blow, but to my surprise they got a little warm.

I am sitting with a 1987 toyota carina , only eighty thousand miles on the clock when I bought ot now eighty six thousand and this, the second time i have had ignition problems/ first time I had to fit new spark plug leads when car came to dead stop. This time there was intermittent misfire as I accelerated, hence I took the distrubuter off like yesterday ! now after shopping it was fine then came to dead stop after 20 meters !! Got it towed home , about a half mile, then it started , ran for five mins then died ! Your video is EXCELLENT, I had now idea how the spark ran acros top of cap to the rotor.
I`m car electrician myself and this is the real repair process sometimes where there is some fun and some things just go wrong. Thanks for funny and realistic video !!

Thank you, solved my problem with your clear and detailed video on the Celica ignition problem. I needed the details, as an old retired mechanic, did a 5 year apprenticeship as a motor mechanic in Australia, leaving tech school in at age 14, grade 9. Short history, did a few years as a trucker for my brother, including building my own tractor/prime mover out of parts, 1955 Federal, 3-71 GM Diesel, Leyland 6 Sp Constant Mesh box and 2 sp diff.... then further education in the trade, Australia and Canada, ending as a Tech College instructor in Auto and Heavy Duty Mechanics after a couple of years of University. Ending my mechanic career in 1985 I was a bit short on the technological detail of the more modern electronics, the fuel side I was ok with, working with Renault Canada back in the 1970's, I was lucky to have some Bosch electronic fuel injection training, built on that over the years but not enough as I got into computers in 1985. When our long term family 1996 Toyota Celica, Australian version suddenly quit, I needed help as I knew where the problem was by deduction, but not exactly which component. Your sketches of the circuitry and theory filled in the blanks and put me on the correct track.... you have an excellent communication ability and persona! I had to understand WHY and WHERE the problem was exactly. It was the Ignition Coil in the distributor that had failed, and your clear and concise discussion gave me the final answers to the puzzle. Thank you very much, keep up the good work.....
Thanks for the information on how far a good spark will jump from the coil. I've bought an aftermarket distributor assembly, a salvaged distributor, and now am getting into multimeters to diagnose if my ignitor is bad on a 97 Corolla. This whole time the spark from the distributor was weak on every coil I've installed. The tough part about testing the ignitor is that my local store oriely's doesn't have a connector for this ignitor. It's time I order a genuine Toyota coil. My original distributor had an oil leak in it as well. I'm guessing that is what made the secondary short in the coil. This is by far the best explanation I've seen of how these systems work.

I hope it fixes my car problem. 1994 Toyota Celica 1.8L. I was changing the valve seals in the engine and forgot to take off the negative to the battery. I touched the alternator with a ratchet which caused a spark and then looked at all the fuses which looked bad and changed them. Now This is video is what I’ve been looking for for 4 days now. Thank you guys!

the igniter will never fail on these 80's and 90's toyotas especially on "2A 3A and 3 A-C" carbureted engines(starting 1983) , igniter on "4" series is the same tough it is 1/4" more in height it fits in "3" series " Integrated Ignition Assembly aka IIA " !!, moisture and condensation will corrode the outside resistor wich you can solder a new one worth 10 cents , japanese products from that era were top of the line for quality , great video

Thank you very much for such informative videos. My Corolla has been giving problems starting for a few seconds then cutting the engine off. I suspected the ignition coil, I have replaced the condenser and igniter. I am going to replace the coil tomorrow. Now I know why my plugs and pistons were flooded. Thanks for teaching us Sir. I like the way you emphasized that the CPU was receiving good Cam & Crank signals by monitoring RPM gauge and confirming Injectors being activated. Also, was neat you found out that the injectors fired in pairs, while monitoring the both pins on the injector with test light to ground, the other paired injector was activated!! Real cool. Thanks man. What most people may not know is we film live. We don't figure out the problem first, then turn the camera on. We just turn it on and go! Sure it makes my videos longer, but we think it helps to show the process, and include the screw ups too!

Anyway, this was a great video, I am a modern day technician who can understand new car technology and work and diagnose them with ease, yet I only know the basics on older cars and I refuse to work on them. After this video I knew a lot about igniters and distributors systems and can work on older cars a little bit with ease. Thank you very much.

Just like you, having your oldest lick a 9v battery...lol , my father installed a electrical wire on the bottom of our fence to keep our dog from diging under it. I bet you know where this is going.lol well he asked me to test it with a metal rod he just so happened to have with him. Thanks sr you just saved me $200 dollars. I just returned the distributor assembly and got the ignition coil for 45 dollars and 💥 💥 the spark ⚡️ issue is solved. Thanks again! 😅

Personally I don't give a crap about bad comments I've been using a lab scope whenever analog back in the early 1980s short of using a sun ignition scope in the 70's 51+ years under the belt 35+ ASE Master tech I am now semi-retired I will use my launch on a tech to tech basis I do appreciate that you do this on RU-vid yeah she do a great job of explaining and showing

Hello Paul, Oil in the distributor is most likely oil seal on the bottom of the shaft. I changed the seal on the distributor on my own car 96 Corolla. It only cost $5 and a little of free time. Thanks for the videos, I always enjoy watching your videos.
Noel Hernandez I did the same to my car. But if the seal isn't failing from becoming hardened, then the cause would be worn bearings in the distributor because the extra play will cause the seal to widen and cause a leak.

I remember having an older Toyota in the shop for rough running and stalling. Found there was a crack in the epoxy in the coil and when it got hot I'm pretty sure it would arc back into itself.
My wife was just laughing hysterically because you recited verbatim what I was saying about that aftermarket intake pipe there as we were watching the video, lol! We say the same things about certain parts or brands (stupid Ford! stupid intake pipe, lol) too. I am also famous for doing EXACTLY what you did when swapping parts from a parts vehicle to my own driver - take one part off, have both on bench, then get sidetracked and install the wrong part - gotta love doing things twice! She thinks we may be related. 😁 Sorry man! 😂 Great vid. I've never worked on older Japanese cars, so that coil setup was new to me. Was a great learning experience (as always!), along with a top-notch refresher for me on troubleshooting. Thanks for another great one! 👍
Very intuitive video Paul, I'm facing the same type of problem on the nissan sentra 2006 of a friend. Not starting. Fuel pump ok, spark plug are ok, we replaced the crankshaft position sensor, no change. We are facing a wall right now...
tq for this video,.glad you are still using the old school method without the fancy tools.i was hopping you do the coil primary secondary resistance checking before putting the new one.
One thing I noticed when you were changing the coil, that may make things easier for you, is after you break loose the nuts on the wires connected to the igniter and the other wire. You could come around and break loose your Phillips head screws, take the screws out, and in your hand you can spin off the nuts to the igniter and the other wire. When putting it back on reverse the process. Seemed like you may would be easier to handle and maybe faster.

Excellent video set, Paul. Many of us work on old cars like this and we try to replace only what is proven bad, for the same reasons in your video. That work flow wouldn't be appropriate in a professional setting, because the chance of a callback or misadventure is higher. We don't have to pay for labor, and we're able to go further if the vehicle has persistent problems, without criticizing the shop in the local coffee house.
Well fitted a new coil , cost £20 delivered by Royal mail to my front door ! Fixed the problem , Yipee! I found those four small screws which hold the coil in place were hell to remove, must have been fixed in with "Locktite ".😃😃
Looking on my garage shelves i found an older identical coil it was made in Japan but again by Bosch., the latest also by Bosch but in China. Now!! this means that I did some years back replace the coil and I do have vague memories of doing so , also of spark plug leads. So this Carina since new and now with about 83000 miles on the clock is on its third coil. Is this usual ?

I have been fighting with my ignition, I will have to see if it gives ANY spark the way you showed with the bad coil. The previous owner of my 95 corolla put on one of those k&n air filters. I doubt it does anything for power but it DOES make the air intake system easier to remove for access to other stuff.
