Asatamanta Jataka (#61)
In this video, the Buddha tells a story of the past about a stubborn monk who ignored the advice of others.
Watsanfran is proud to present stories taken from the Jatakas, Dhammapada, and Buddhist history. These stories often use past rebirth stories (Jatakas) to reveal the connection between past and present, and illustrate the relationship between cause and effect.

I did not particularly like the part when Buddha himself point 'woman' as wicked. Could have used 'some of the women' or plainly 'some people'. Otherwise, it is a good lesson.

Why this story is generalizing all women as wicked?.its an anti women story just like we see in other religion !

Dear Sister, if you watch the entire story you will see that one woman herself is saying to his son that go and learn this teaching that how disgusting the body is, and remember one more thing it's not only about women body the same teaching applied to mens body also. I hope you get my point

I’m a woman. Women always want to look young and beautiful. It is an obsession of women that I have noticed myself. And no it is not because of patriarchy - that is the culture of being a women for thousands of years. Just notice the movement in the west of women over 50 wanting to be considered sexy, fat women wanting to be considered sexy, women starving themselves and body shaming. It’s endless. It is not all women but for many women it is true. Women are far more trapped in self identifying with the body then men.

Because the story begins with Ananda's unhinged desire for a woman. His desirous bubble could not have been popped without showing how unreliable human desires are. If ananda was a woman then the story would have been explained with men being mischievious amd unfaithful. Its a relative reasoning which can only be explained with opposited sexes in this case. All woman are not evil but also all women are not good either. Same applies to men. Though Buddha says women are vile only because of the reason the bond of identifying one with their ego, beauty, and thoughts is strongest amongst them by nature. All of which are impediments for higher realisation.

Yeah, I wish the Buddha said men are wicked too. A lot of misconception about women because of that statement. If he had clarify that it goes to both gender, it wouldn't lead to oppression of women in the East. I've met monks and even nuns who genuinely thinks all women are evil. Which is ironic coming from Buddhist nuns. Remember, all the Buddhist teachings nowadays came from oral teachings from the past. Like a children's game of telephone, some may been changed along the way. In addition, we're in the dharma ending age where it is harder to gain enlightenment. During the end of the ages, dharma will be lost from the world before Maitreiya comes back to revive it.

I cannot believe these words against all women were uttered by a Buddha, having himself been born out of a loving mother, having been looked after by a loving auntie, and having witnessed many bikkhunis becoming arahants. He is using divisive speech (men vs women) and vilifying insults to unfairly generalise about half human kind, contradicting the precept regarding right speech. The moral of the story? Due to their unempathetic actions and lack of compassion, those two men sent that poor old woman straight to hell, creating at the same time a horrendous bad Karma for themselves This story must be a late addition fabricated by ill intentioned people.

Try to look at the it beyond form (form of man and woman). Place the appropriate attention towards the characteristics of mental states. There could be forms that encompasses some mental states as a whole. Besides, some kamma is unavoidable due to its tendency and intensities.

Not all women are like this neither all men are saint. Many times, it's men who made women to fall because of their weakness. I hope Buddha has not said this for women. There were many bhikkunis who were arahant in his time and now also so many nuns are there as well as householder women practicing morality (sila).

The Jatakas don’t always align with the Dhamma. While they do share good life lessons I believe that in many ways they misrepresent the Buddha, Dhamma, & Sangha. The Suttas are much more consistent.

'Brahmin' is a caste. It is best to exclude such words. Use the word 'teacher' instead.
