Nanda Jataka (#39)
In this video, the Buddha tells a story about a past life of a monk who was respectful to his teacher in one place and disrespectful to his teacher in another.
Wat San Fran is proud to present stories taken from the Jatakas, Dhammapada, and Buddhist history. These stories often use past rebirth stories (Jatakas) to reveal the connection between past and present, and illustrate the relationship between cause and effect.
Check out the playlist #AnimatedBuddhistStories by Wat San Fran to explore the complete series.

There is a background: there are robbers in the forest and they murdered people. They murdered the great Arhant Modgallana during the lifetime of the Buddha, skinning him alive, throwing sand and rocks under his skin, and sewing him up again and rolling him around on the ground laughing, until he died. The monk Angullimalla was previously a murderer who killed people going thru the forest and chopped off their fingers because his own robber guru told him to make a necklace of 100,008 fingers as an offering to the Goddess Kali and that it would ensure he would attain liberation from Rebirth and Reincarnation!! There were also crazy lunatics in the forest attacking people, killing and eating them! Not to mention tigers, elephants in must, cobra, and boa constrictors, kraits, and dangerous insects. So going slowly in the forest was putting their lives in real danger. It is far more likely that the monk was really scared about their slow pace thru the forest, than that he was proud and haughty!! There is ALWAYS a cultural background to these stories that explain more. There are still robbers and rapists in the forest. I myself narrowly escaped the bandits of Pullan Devi's group.

In this Jataka , the incidents dont seem to be as in real they could be. SariPutta was Arihant at that time which means fully enlightened and no less than Buddha in his knowledge , he did not need Buddha to explain about monk's past lives instead being Arihant he himself was capable too so why would he address and ask this from Buddha. Incidents dont seem to be real as in they could had happened in past

That is true but Buddha was teacher of sariputta that is why he asked to explain the story before big audience of monks.

Arahant Lozaka was enlightened but he could not escape his negative karma of never having enough to eat. I guess there is a difference between buddhas and arahants Even as a boddhisvata, Buddha Shakyamuni displayed deep wisdom in many of his previous lives.
