In 1969 asked a recording engineer who was the best band he'd recorded & he said Iguana was it, I also knew their manager & often ran posters & flyers for dances which featured them around Melbourne dance scene.

I seem to remember that this group grew out of an East Bentleigh garage. I only remember them having 2 singles, and I think I bought both of them. The B side of California My Way was also good, Requiem Mass Latham....???. California My Way was a cover of, from memory, an album track by the Fifth Dimension. Their second release, Good News, was also of a high standard, but, as is sometimes the case, when the second release is better than the first, the public don't love it, strangely, or oddly enough. Think, Whiter Shade of Pale, then Homburg. Never heard of Iguana after that....

Hi Michael, bit late with this, Iguana's first single was an excellent double sided "Imagine This/Dreaming Away To Myself" which can be found on this site, then "California My Way", then a Vanilla Fudge style version of "Ticket To Ride/Sunshine People", "Sunshine People" was a very good Hans Poulsen written ode to "The Flower People" and in my opinion should have been the A side, can't find it anywhere online but I have still got the single, as you have stated "Good News" came last.

Love this song. Great era in Australian music! So many wonderful hip groups of the day around then! I used to watch the Town Criers rehearse at one of the band members homes, as a kid! Does anyone know how tall Gary Sweetman was? He looks so short.

Extraordinary clip. Plenty of band members miming the backing vocals, including the lead singer who doesn’t mime the lead until the end when he mimes “We gotta gotta go!” Like I said extraordinary!

These guys played at our school formal (Elwood High School, 1969 or 70?), God knows what our Social Committee had to pay them! But I tell you what, they were worth it. Very professional and great harmonies. Plus I got to dance with Marcia, haha.... Great days.

I attended McKinnon High School between 1964 and 1969 and remember a concert in our new assembly hall in 1969 consisting of Max Merritt and the Meteors, MPD Ltd, The Flies and Iguana. The principle at the time was NOT exactly impressed by Stewie Speers (Max's Drummer) I have always remembered this show. Thanks for the reminder!

@@GregHoward-fs9np Thought the Hall was opened in 1964 or 65. The Flies and The Wild Colonials played there. Saw Iguana playing in church hall on Centre Road Bentleigh near Jasper Road.

@@blueycarlton Reading through my copies of "Thistle" Magazines, Fred Meyer (Principle) mentions the hall in 1966. I remember earlier years having Assemblies held in the Quadrangle between the classroom blocks, but I do remember the concert in my later years at the school.

First time I saw a rock-band late 1960's ??... Marist Brothers College Ashgrove Brisbane, QLD. THAT was VERY progressive for Marist Brothers in those days; I DID NOT have a good time /life from Grades 6 - 10. (SOME were sadistic brutal bastards) Never heard about the Iguana since then ?? They would now have to be in their +++++70's or dead. Nice to see we have a memory of them on film.

Cleve Littlewood the guitarist was in a band that I was in in the early 70's in Brisbane, called Oracle. I would love to know where he is now. I believe he may be in Melbourne. If your Dad knows, could you let me know.

@@leeenfieldsmle I too was sent to a Christian Brothers boarding school (in Ballarat !!). They were second rate priests (not much better) who were sadists or sexual deviates. They no longer exist, live by the sword ,die by the sword ! On a lighter note , I actually saw Iguana at Allans Music , loved them and I have played in bands ever since.

Iguana should have been much bigger. A couple of things stopped them. Firstly, the lead singer was invisible. It was great for publicity but made photo sessions a nightmare. Secondly, one of the members was a midget. And the other members made it obvious by performing on platforms in film clips whilst the little guy was made to stand on the floor.

Short singers are very common. What they needed, IMO, was someone to manage their image: clothes, stage demeanour etc, The only other version that I think comes close in quality is the song writer's (Willie Hutch) soul/funk recording of the song.

one clue to the group being short lived, is that in this clip, the lead singer refuses to take his part, and forms the back up vocals, with no lead singer being evident, causing the camera to focus on members who are not singing. when the lead vocals are being performed. The nett result? A short lived group.
@indeliblejames

The lead singer does take part and it looks more like a production error.. Someone needs to ask a witness. It does unfortunately mar their performance. They had a great sound though.
