Extra Mural Lectures (Estd. in 1982) - Flagship lecture series, IIT Madras aiming to facilitate interaction between students and speakers from diverse fields. On 18th Aug 2023, we featured the esteemed speakers in the panel discussion on '32 Years On: India's Journey as a Market Economy' are Dr. C. Rangarajan,19th governor of RBI, and Dr. D. Subba Rao, 22nd governor of RBI, and steered the economy through rough times of 1991 financial crisis whereas DR Subba Rao handled the 2008 global economic crisis.
They elucidated many economic lessons likely firmly advocated embracing global economic integration requires acknowledging the attached consequences giving the well-known example of market fluctuations in Greece, and its far reaching effects even on India, a country with relatively limited economic ties to Greece. They were vocal in stating RBI governance demands a degree of autonomy, ideally under technocratic leadership, without short term political intervention. They debunked international aspirations of Rupee as a distant goal and conveyed currency's worth is intricately tied to the robustness of the nation's economy and the ease of converting the currency and the need to focus on that. And finally we saw the outlining of the factors contributing to the 1991 economic crisis and their historic handling of the same.
