Prof has given good advice, but here is more practical advice: 1. For 1st 3 sems, focus only on 2 things: Grades + DSA. Remember, companies will start testing you in campus 5th sem onwards. 2. By 4th sem, decide which groups to join, and which profs to work with. Publishing a paper will give you experience and make you stand out everywhere. Will increase your range of MS options, scholarships, and even off campus placement offers. 3. Preferably by 7th sem, have publication + 1 good summer intern + good DSA + good grades. The sooner you are done with your first pub, the better it is, since you can devote the rest of your time to dev skills, in whichever field you wish to pursue (Web, AI, embedded, mechanical etc). 4. That is it. First 3 years are the real years of btech. 4th year can be rewarding if the 1st 3 years are spent correctly. In 8th sem, you will either intern, think about startup, or write a second paper. In 7th sem, some succesful ppl will even prep GRE + MS applications. This is nearly the only way to complete btech succesfully.
I salute you sir for coming ahead and guiding them through this wonderful platform. I really believe that many other professors from other universities should come up with this initiative by preventing their students from being misguided.
I have a few points to add. I graduated from IIT Kharagpur in 2018 with Dual Degree (Bachelors + Masters). Probably, I might be wrong and the professor could validate. First-year is when you are chartering unknown territories and one doesn't know what to do. This could be characterized by a lack of self-confidence when you see a lot of people doing a lot of things and excelling in each of them. At times, an imposter syndrome draws in. You could be running after societies trying to fit in, trying to get the next best POR to prove your self-worth or doing nothing at all trying to enjoy college life. No matter what you do, if you stick to the following advice it will be the most worthwhile years of your life. 1) Acads and CGPA : no matter what department you have joined, try to keep a really high CGPA. We have a mentality where we tend to downweigh the importance of academics in Indian colleges until we realise the importance later on. No matter what you are doing later in life, your job during a B.Tech. degree (undergraduate studies) is to "study" - take courses and excel in them. If you apply to institutions for higher studies (Indian or foreign) (MS or MBA) - they don't really want to see what POR you had or what was your hobby or sometimes you are not even expected to have publications (good if you have them) - what you are expected is to have studied and got grades during those 4 or 5 years. You have one job - "study" 2) Hobby: join a society or POR only if you enjoy doing it. No certificate or POR doesn't really matter that much. When I look at a CV, I never ever look what position he/she held as a fest organising manner. What I look at is - CGPA, projects and what are they passionate about. If you have a hobby - go to gym, pick a guitar or do whatever - make sure you pick it up, prioritize it to excel in it and improve yourself at it during the course of your study. 3) Professors >> Friends: Make professors your best friend. Attend lectures, ask doubts, attend after-lecture office hours with them. Ask them what more to study. 4) Friends: Have a social life. Go out for walks with your friends. Discuss your problems with them, listen to their problems. Without any intentions of reaping rewards, invest time to nurture genuine relations with them. In the end, that is what will matter. 5) Society : Do it because you love it. But no society is worth it if it asks you to miss the class which is scheduled for 8 AM tomorrow. If it interferes with your classes the next morning - leave it. Not worth the time. At times, it will feel too much to take; you will feel like giving up. It is usually when boredom sets. Don't worry. Follow the process and you will be fine. This advice is valid for all institutions (IITs/NITs and other colleges). No matter what college you have - doesn't matter in the long run. If you couldn't get into IITs, it is definitely not the end of the road. I have seen a lot lot many people from other colleges doing even better than people from IITs. Remember, your future opportunities will be kinder to you. So keep excelling at the next best opportunity you get.

All very good points! I would also add a point about actively engaging in outdoor sports. As we graduate and move on to other roles, the ability to actively seek out avenues to stay fit becomes important. The privilege of cycling to Nalanda for a 7:30 AM class doesn't exist everywhere😂. Also, playing a sport like football etc is almost an universal language that allows to establish friendships pretty much anywhere in the world!

I think I did mention some of these points as a faculty advisor in that meeting just after you all had joined. But I can understand how some of those things might not have stuck because at the point of admission there were so many logistical things flying around in your minds! If only I had thd idea to make this kind of video back then!
I am a doctor(MBBS), going for my post graduation( MD), and almost all the things you have mentioned can be generalised for prospective medical students going to medical colleges too. Selecting a good peer group/friend circle is probably one of the first and most important decisions we take independently. Company matters, and I've seen enough examples of this in medical/engineering colleges :)
Thank You Professor I was committing the same mistake every single day, of ignoring the course material and treating every single book that had been recommended as text book. So I would always want to cover that entire book from from end to end. But it was very late that I realise that what I was doing was wrong This is because I come from a college which does not even belong to Tier3 But then I got myself into IIT Madras's online degree program, where I am learning a lotttt. The biggest positive (of ALL) that I have found by studying from IIT is : They teach you how to learn Btw thank you again for this advice

Most teachers in school, coaching institutes and college focus all their time and efforts on teaching knowledge and skills, but Wisdom is seldom taught, as it is considered preachy and idiosyncratic... Most students consider the courses in Humanities subjects (and 'Life Skills' course which many colleges including IITs have introduced) as irrelevant and artificial, similar to self-help books 👎... Oth law was introduced after 2nd law was well established, As it was well established We were forced to name it 0th law rather than shifting 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd.
@@kragrrr read it in "laws of thermodynamics a very short introduction by peter Atkins" After reading 2 chapters i realised, What Quality over quantity looks like. a very short introduction by oxford is a series of around 600 books comprising of various subjects, its a really great way to learn new things. I am in 12th std. too 😁
Sir, would you please make video on how to understand mathematical formalism? How to understand mathematical derivations? Engineering textbooks tend to be intimidated with the maths. Do mathematians and physicist have same mind set/view of thinking? Classical mechanics just escalates from newtonian physics to Hamilton/Lagrangian formalism.

As in thermodynamics, zeroth law is most fundamental. On the same, in engineering coding(Python) is most fundamental. People say everyone codes, doesn't matter what ones branch is.
@@Prof_JC I don't exactly know how to put it in words. But in python counting starts with 0, especially for data structures like lists, tuples, strings, sets. Every element in data structures have an index which starts from 0 instead of 1. For example, first element in a list has index 0. You can also see how "for loops" start counting with 0 by using range function and not setting lower limit.

Hey, i may be a stranger but i truly believe in u, trust urself and go for it. And ofc studying from internet is nothing bad, in fact you can do much better if you have confidence in self studying. I'm also moving to 11th and i may not be the best one to advice but in case u haven't opted for any college yet i'd say go for govt college it will surely save u time and money.. I've joined coaching recently and honestly i'm very unhappy amd not satisfied with the "coaching" ways of teaching.. i prefer self studying too.. and i believe you can crack competitive exams.. however, make sure u have proper guidance from someone experienced ( teacher/any expert you know) Also Which state are you from?
Follow only one teacher till the end and for the mobile part, sometimes you have to fight for your dreams. Let them think whatever they do, that's your journey, u gotta fight for it. In the end, after seeing your hardwork, they will start trusting you.
Yeah do that. Try for govt. I'm on 12th now and I would advice u to stay consistent with ur studies. Consistency will surely bring u ur desired goals. U can use library at break time if available there. Also can use chat gpt to make the concept easier to understand.

I am a first year student at IIT DELHI I have true advice for you, so don't opt for a coaching instead try to get any distance learning program (resonance preferred) And just try to solve it completely at least twice After that you must attempt more than 100 mock tests You have 700 days. They can be part test but complete them If you have done these two things no one can stop you

@@Prof_JC yes sir. It's actually very necessary for me, since this year I completed my BTech in May from NITPY in mechanical engineering. And I'm (as everyone says: wasted this year) preparing for GATE exam and learning CAE tools for structural analysis of sheet metal components so that I'm atleast employable.

Totally agree with having friends which are more than best friend. I had this friend in 1st year of my IIT Delhi college life in 2010. And even today I ask him for any favor, he will do it without asking any question. These are life long friends

Sir what about the students who couldn't get there desired branch because of their rank in JEE...In my case I've always been good in programming/coding, did internships in my 11th grade...but just because of my jee rank I had to chose Aerospace at iitb which I don't think I'm even interested in..
First, a big congrats on getting g into IITB. Aerospace is a great department with wonderful opportunities. There are hardcore programming and software related needs in various aspects of Aero ... high Reynolds number flows (very challenging), flight dynamics and control, structural design ... and more. You probably don't realize it now but with the programming skills and interests that you have together with a Aero Engg. Degree (that too from IITB) how attractive you can build up your profile! There are always going to be great programmers and always great Aero engineers. But you can combine the best of both!
There are ample opportunities for pursuing programming/computer science research as a career path at IITB. A minor degree in computer science is offered, and one can also take up quite a few post-grad level courses as electives.

One of my son's seniors secured AIR 22 in 2015. Due to rank pressure, he chose cse in iitb although he was passionate about Aerospace. At the end of his 1st year, he changed his branch to Aero. He worked in Boeing Bangalore for 2 years and this year he joined university of Illinois Urbana for his MS. So why are you not happy? It's all about your passion what you want to do. Aero is a very good branch. There are an ample of opportunities if you are on a right track.

Sir, I fully endorse your advise, having been there done that. All points are important but what hits me the most is "everything need not show on your CV".
One golden advice is at the end of the video! There is nothing more important if you don't maintain your overall health and wellness. Taking meals at regular intervals is very very important for the body. Sleeping at the same time every day (you will have the best sleep of your life if you keep yourself away from all the blue screens at least 1-2 hours before sleeping, utilise this time with your room mates discussing about ideas and things to do for self-growth, just 5 min meditating before sleep is just awesome) and most importantly waking up even before the sun wakes up , go for a run , do some yoga to get energised for the rest of the day. Have a good day!

Great advise. Ego needs to drop even after graduation and as one enters corporate world where they face experienced co-workers. Workplace culture, behaviours and soft skills may be brushed off by new graduates but is as important as technical skills for career progression.

13:54 as in thermodynamics the zeroth law was the most fundamental or basic law, though it was stated after first two laws, scientists named it as zeroth law. Similarly you have also stated all the points earlier in the video, but health is the most important and foremost point, so you are stating as zeroth point. (Sorry,I don't know python though.)
Hello Friend . In python , the counting , which is sometimes referred as indexing , starts from 0 and goes on as usual i.e we count in Whole numbers rather than natural numbers. It is great analogy here in this vedio. Thank you sir.
I respect the opinions, but being an IITB graduate I do disagree with your view on the importance of grades to some extent. This is just my view and others may disagree: Yes a higher grade is always better but after a certain point, the time spent in trying to get a better grade is not worth the gains. The student would be much better spending that time in culturals/sports/tech teams/most importantly socializing. A holistic growth is much more important than pure academic knowledge. Then there's the question of the kind of future that the student desires. 1. For a government job, the grades don't matter at all. The student can focus on just getting their degree on time and focus on studying for the entrance exam for the job. 2. If they wish to get into finance/banking/consulting, an 8+ GPA is all that's needed. Above that, the GPA stops being a major differentiator. Even 7+ is considered to be okay by a large percentage of firms. Trading firms don't ask for the GPA or the branch of the student as they only require aptitude. 3. For a software job, the grade in the major won't matter as long as it's 7+ for people from non CS branches. They should either do a minor in CS, or do some external MOOC courses/competitive coding etc. to get the interview. 4. If they wish to open a start-up or go work in a family business, the GPA again doesn't matter. This is also applicable if they wish to enter the entertainment/culturals/sports fields. In fact, in most of these cases, even the degree doesn't matter. 5. If they wish to pursue further education in their field, or they wish to do any further education from a college in the west(US, UK, Germany etc.) only in that scenario is the GPA really important. Western colleges do care a lot about the GPA and a 9+ GPA is normally expected, although more is always better for them. Not everyone needs to go blind for a GPA at IITs. These are great institutions mainly because of the kind of people that go there and interact with each other. It is the network of contacts students make at IIT that realistically help them in their future. More student groups and more socialization always helps. The kind of soft skills people can learn in these societies is priceless, and a single point GPA upgrade can never compare to them. People work really hard to enter these colleges, and they deserve to enjoy their lives for 4 years. In the end, the only difference a smaller GPA will make is that you would get a 12 lac pa package instead of a 15-18 lac pa package. But I promise you, if you have the soft skills, within 2-3 years, the 12 lac will convert to 25 lac, but the 15 lac will only go upto 20 lac. There is a lot more in the world than bookish knowledge which is important for a human to thrive. Also, I completely agree with your point about health. There's nothing in the world more important than health. Everyone must take care of their bodies. Eat healthier, have a fixed sleep cycle, engage in some form of physical activity and always take your vitamins💛💛💛 This is what I feel, if someone disagrees, I'm open to discussion, please do reply your agreements/disagreements.❤
Thank you for describing your points in such a comprehensive fashion. I really wish more students from this generation could do this! I agree that if one does not wish to go for higher studies then marginal differences in GPA hardly matters. Plus, curiously, I have also noticed that students who take a step back to behave like a normal human being as opposed to a GPA generating machine often do end up getting higher GPAs!
Feeling kinda sad that i am unable to get taught by teachers like u because i dont get a decent rank in JEE adv. But, those advises will be with me forever when i go into NIT.

Agree with pretty much everything here. Grades advice is on point. Very wise and mature perspective. Health advice is of course a very well intentioned advice. But there are a few points I'd like to mention. As an IITR alumnus, I can safely say Indian Professors are not really great at coming up with courses. When I went for my MS to the US, students were shocked to discover how much content Indian and Chinese students had covered during 4 years of B Tech. However came the end of first semester and it was very obvious we had covered vast expanses of the subject but we had no in depth understanding of our prior material. Indian Professors love to cram 3-5 semester's worth of content in one course which is exactly where I disagree with the professor. Pick up any course from MIT, Princeton, or other good international university. Sometimes they split a 300 page textbook in to two courses. And here we take snippets of 10 different books which frustrates the student and overall kills the learning process. Lack of concern for psychological health. We are in late teens when we leave for college. For most of us this is a taxing time especially with gross food and, frankly, less than ideal living conditions. But it's ok. However there is no escape from the dreariness of the routine, just a few student clubs and a three day fest. Most students would benefit if the IITs offered a little bit more than academics and provided student bodies a little bit more autonomy to govern their own affairs, not just Hostel secretaries and mess in charges, who pretty much have no power whatsoever.
Thanks for the kind words. Let me try to respond to the few points you mentioned. I am afraid you may be generalizing some of the negative experiences you have had with some profs at IITR with Indian professors. Most of my direct experiences have been with IIT KGP professors and to some extent I have a bit of familiarity with the coursework of the other older IITs. And, I can vouch for the fact that in all the courses I have seen, no prof ever crammed 3-5 semesters worth of material into a single course! This is also the issue where I could not understand as to which statements that I had made in this video with which you disagreed. All the best professors of any globally recognized institute do indeed eclectically combine material from various sources - "10 different books" (and much more!) - to present to the students the best version of the course that they believe should be presented. And, by the way, while MIT is certainly a standard bearer in engineering education, I wouldn't say Princeton is (not in engineering to the best of my knowledge) ... if we have to put forth examples, it should be Caltech, MIT and some other institutes (Brown, for example in the area of solid mechanics). And, I don't know if you are aware of this, at Caltech, it is said that the coverage is such that it is like the gush of information flow from the prof is like a hosepipe. Whether that is good or bad for UG students is a different matter - I just thought I would give an actual example. Again, across the pond (the Atlantic Ocean), in the UK ... both at Oxford and Cambridge, their terms (they have "terms" instead of semesters) are extremely crammed and they cover huge swathes of coursework in a very short time. The expectation is that the students will cover a lot of material through self-study and through the excellent tutorial system that they have (as far as I know only Oxford and Cambridge have that in the whole of the UK). The pace, the depth, the breadth of each course work is gruelling. At Imperial College, they do have a series of courses on a single subject ... but I can assure you that the content across those courses span more (much, much more) than a single 300-page textbook. Again it is debatable whether that is good or bad for UG students. Just giving a few non-US examples. Finally, coming to the last point of non-academic activities of the students, over at KGP, there are so many (really, sooo very many) that students actually have to make a conscious decision not to spread themselves too thin in their participation in these societies. Furthermore, within each department (at least the large ones), there is a UG society where the students organize various activities throughout the year. They select their own officiating members, come up with ideas to organize various things on their own. But I do realize that in case of KGP or some of the other older IITs, we have just had more time to develop these aspects. I am sure over time this culture and tradition will find a strong footing across all the IITs. Again, coming back to the examples on the course works, although I did gave some responses, but you are absolutely right that in some aspects, we prof need to be more vigilant regarding the depth of our coverage. We have had a massive revision of the entire curriculum very recently and we have tried to incorporate some of these aspects. But it is an evolving process, and we profs have a lot to learn too. I am really glad that you broached this topic of discussion. Without these discussions, we will just marinate in our ill-founded complacency. I sincerely thank you!

There are Indian Professors under whom I enjoyed studying. I was referring to MIT because that's the open course material I use for my Math courses. I've long since distanced myself from engineering disciplines since I wasn't cut out for that. I'll admit my ignorance. I'm not too familiar with British universities but American universities typically suggest a textbook to follow (Stanford, Princeton, CalTech for Math courses). Again I'm not familiar with engineering departments. And the only reason I am referring to these universities is because of own courses. The University I attended also recommended textbooks for the courses and it was vastly helpful. Again to be clear, I am not dissing on the professors in general. They are very accomplished researchers in their respective fields. Also your observation is quite correct. My experiences at IIT did have an effect on me but even recently when I took up courses at Indian institutes, often the courses were unstructured. For example, Abstract Algebra in any university is covered up to fields in one semester but the courses in India, on NPTEL and otherwise (I got to know through fellow course participants) covers what is covered in 3-5 semesters. Same applies to Topology courses. Sorry for giving Math examples but I have distanced myself from engineering so I can't say with certainty what's the norm. However it's also possible that this is particularly a problem with Sciences in which case my apologies. And I'd like to agree further that activities for students are a result of the culture fostered at the institute. I can't really compare the two but I'd like to mention there were activities at IITR too. I think it is probably the lack of university culture at IITs that makes me a little sad. And I think some parts of it also don't translate well from American or German universities since a lot of those activities are embedded in to the cultural fabric of those places, like, fraternities, student buddy services, etc. that give a little dimension to our lives besides being a student. Actually, as far as British universities are concerned my first-hand experience was with the maths departments at Oxford and Birmingham, where I did my two postdocs (it was in applied maths). They certainly have a very structured programme. But, especially at Oxford, the course coverage in one term is quite extensive. Ironically, I am not too familiar with the maths courses at the IITs! But if they (or any other department) is cramming 3-5 sem worth of material in one sem, it is most unwise.

Chemical Engineering IS and will continue to be extremely and critically important. NIT Warangal is a very good institute. I am sure in your first there round be a course like Programming and Data Structures or something equivalent. You will necessarily have to use a programming language there ... additionally you can learn Python.

Never ask this question to anybody. It was your decision. So stand by with it with full conviction. Only then you can chart out your career in the best possible way. Don't let you mind go back to that decision. There is no objective correct answer here. However, even if what you have decided is by some criterion the better one, you would still not be able to do really well in it if you keep questioning yourself. So be steadfast and March ahead! Sir, I was a JEE aspirant but I joined a private college because of marks. Should I still aim for IITs in my first year or continue where I am. It's a vague question but any input from your side is highly appreciated!
You know your situation best. So think about it very carefully and very very honestly. Did you not get through to the IITs because of a shortfall in your preparation in easily identified topics which if you knew you could have answered some more questions and then gotten a higher rank. If so, trying once more is something you can realistically think about. However, if the overall preparation is nowhere near the mark, please do not do this. The end result will be that your first year at the private college will be ruined on the one hand and you won't be successful also at JEE again. So, I repeat, think about your preparation level very very honestly and then decide.

Students my simple advice is, the U-19 cricket team even those guys may win a world cup or may not, neither of it that is the end of all achievement or progress one can make, the thing is BTech or MTech or PhD are all processes. To become the cricketer of national side Or great engineer/scientist. Higher degrees gives you freedom to choose what you want to be in life. My suggestion is don't drop your guard down. Reminds me of my 1st yr. in RK hall, at iit kgp 70-75. Fell ill, was hospitalized by wing mates, D-block, ground floor, who kept visiting me regularly in shifts, for a pretty long time repeatedly, spoiling my report card. Later found courses easy, effortless with smooth sailing after initial scare. Thanks to my wing mates, who attended me & did not let me know about the efforts they must have made. Hope I had recd your tips before joining. I've forwarded these tips to son (ex-iit, bby) US, & daughter( Er, manager).
