IIT prof's overview of Mechanical Engineering | What are its courses? Who should study it? 

FINALLY I FOUND AN EDUCATED PERSON ON RU-vid. THIS IS THE REAL VALUE OF AN IIT. TO BE SURROUNDED BY SUCH PROFESSORS.

Such an important message at this stage for students who are choosing their branch of study. This is the first stepping stone towards choice of a career. It would be nice if something like this is done for all the branches. Also it would be good if guest lectures (both from academic and professional perspective) for 12th standard students become a norm in all schools, which will help students take an informed decision. I remember when I had to choose an engineering branch, I was having a conversation with my uncle. He asked me just one question, "what kind of job will you like?" and I replied "I want a mix of both desk job and outside work". He suggested I choose civil engineering and conversation went deeper from there. More than 30 years have passed and I haven't regretted the decision.

Thank You Prof. JC Sir, I chose IIT KANPUR MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. I liked the course of it. Even I was getting IIT BOMBAY CHEMICAL ENGINEERING but your words changed my decision earlier and now I got Mechanical at IITK.

In my view, both Chemical and Mechanical will have nearly similar opportunities later on. However in India, I find Mechanical Engineering to have an edge.

After my BSc physics, I was thinking I had taken a wrong decision in doing BSc physics as I know programming and after 12th i was doing web and Android development. But now I realised "I can't live without studying physics, and learning tech. and electronics is my hobby". 9:05 not only Mechanical, but also Electrical and Electronics. I'm EC graduate, stuff like vector calculus and their applications in Electromagnetics based subjects blows minds away. I consider thermodynamics as hardeast among all engg branches, but antenaas, RF design, etc. would be 2nd hardest or equally hard.

Excellent topic Sir, If you don't mind i like to share my own experience I done my btech (hons) in automotive engineering with a gpa of 9.1 from wbut & want to pursue mtech in thermal sciences so i obtained out gate which i cracked but after cracking gate i found many of the iits including iit kpg don't allow automobile graduates to pursue their mtech in thermal sciences & engineering field initially i was shocked but as one of your earlier videos you mentioned that we should explore by ourselves so i started doing that & found there are many interdisciplinary thermal allied branches like Energy Ocean Aerospace where we also can pursue our mtech which majorly work in the field of thermal engineering. So i started applied that & ended up getting selection in mtech sustainable energy engineering in iit Kanpur, iit kgp ocean engineering, iit delhi materials engineering apart from that i got almost thermal engineering/mechanical engineering mtech from all 2nd gen iits including iit Gandhinagar iit Indore & also got direct PhD in mechanical engineering from Iit Kanpur so right now i am planning to join IIT Kanpur mtech sustainable energy since i am interested in thermal management of battery electronics & fuel cells kind of research & then Ph.D. from any top tier institute from Abroad specifically USA/GERMANY. During this period i found many star faculty actually from this energy engineering branch like prof Avinash Agarwal from IIT KANPUR top cited prof in the field of IC engines, apart from that prof Praveen from IIT GUWAHATI & Prof. C. Bakli from Iit kgp probably you are familiar with this name since he also done his doctoral studies under Dr. Suman Chakraborty. I think our generation is blessed to have a guide like you, i am going to started my journey from next months onwards since i am also interested in academics, your blessings are required. Thank you.

Sir I have cleared jee mains this year with good rank and choosing mechanical engineering at DTU, i tried but i didn't end up as iitian and for now the honour of meeting u in person and learning about the course from you is ended . But my passion towards mechanical engineering is enormous, i wish i can be a good engineer and a good person in life, and be worthy to meet you in person as a student of yours.

sir thank you so much for this video. I gave jee mains and I am getting very lower branches in nits using state quota like material,metallurgy. I am also getting mechanical+cse minor both together in 1 course in vit vellore in scholarship programme. I do not like material as I always dreamt of studying aerospace, which is not possible now as i was unable to clear advanced. So it would be very helpful to get insightful suggestion from you on what i should choose between vit and nit. **ps: sir you are doing such a great job for the students like me who does not come from a privilaged background. We fall behind not only due to lack of money but also proper info and guidance, even though we really try our best. Please keep up your exceptional work.**

I still remember in my post graduation days my professor of robotics said to me, "to find a problem that you want to solve is the real meaning of research". Sir it is my humble request to you to also discuss once about the career in calibration of mechanical instruments and machines. Various softwares regarding the calibration. In my post graduation days I was doing thesis on calibration of water tunnel. I wish if you could also give us a guidance on laboratory set up as a career option.

Hello sir, you will probably not remember me, but I took your advice about missing out on jee content because I prepared for MHT CET state level entrance exam, in one of your video's comments section. You advised me to proceed steadfastly on my course of action without second thoughts. It has been more than two months, and I've gotten a very good percentile; good enough to get mechanical engineering in the state's top state engineering college (CoEP Technological University, Pune). Just today, I was in a bit of a doubt about my decision of mechanical engineering as everyone around me is browsing through colleges for higher departments like CS and IT, even those with their percentile scores much below mine. Most people who are not keen in maths is because they don't practice it enough ....... I believe when time comes , anyone can become good at it . What is your opinion about it ? I am not that good at maths (because i just don't spend enough time studying mathematics) , but if i study a topic , there is rarely a concept i cannot grasp. I like mechanical engineering, and me currently being bad at it will not stop me if i want to persue it .

Thank you very much for this video Sir! However, I am still conflicted over whether I should pursue Mechanical or Electrical. With my rank, I can either comfortably get into Mechanical at Shibpur, or EEE/ECE at Andhra Pradesh. Your session clarified many of my doubts about Mechanical, and I am sure that I will like it, with my passion in robotics and development in the thermodynamic properties of various composites.

Sir i am getting Chemical in NIT Surathkal and Mechanical in NIT Surathkal. I'am a bit confused in choosing the branch as I love Physics but i was bot able to master Fluid mechanics and SHM due to lack of time during my jee preparation and also another thing is that i am not that good at mathematics as well. But still my inner soul is forcing me to take up mechanical engineering over chemical engineering. Prof. Could you please throw some light on my dilemma.

If one isn't good at rotational dynamics and those grade 11 pulley problems with changing mass, maybe Mech isnt for you? Also Fluid mechanics is a fair bit of hard calculus.

Thank you sir, I was not sure about what i should take but after watching this video and the other one about mistakes to avoid in Jossa, i think i should be taking Mathematics&Computing in IIT(ISM) Dhanbad over mechanical in IITKGP since i am genuinely interested to learn more of the core computer based subjects too, although mechanical seemed like a nice option, I have no plans on pursuing higher studies in it.

Sir, I am a student who dropped for neet 2023 . But i was not able to score enough marks to get into a medical college. At the same time i appeared in jee mains and got 97% which is enough to get into mechanical engg(obc) in nit calicut. So i didnt study mathematics for a long time. Will it be so tough for me to crack engineering level mathematics? I am afraid whether i can go through such a situation.

Physics" 3yr course (not like normal MSc physics of 2 Years). Here they are giving a specialization in "electronics/photonics" & students are getting placed in tech. companies. I can also pursue PhD physics in further with this degree. I know web and android development, done some projects also during my BSc and I like electronics very much in physics. Sir this is my drop year. I am from covid batch and 11th was wasted. 12th was struggle. I came to know about JEE only after 12th. I have severely failed due to self study in this year. I am very hopeful and enthusiastic for next year, the inner me is not dead yet but how should I go ahead, a full drop with online coaching or offline coaching(I have never been to coaching for 10+2) or partial drop with studying engineering at some other college? Sir if a candidate can maximum attempt JA twice but why it is not applicable on the students who can't give JA in 12th passing year.. Why JA 2024 has rule that candidate must passed/passing 12 th class in 2023 or 2024..?? Is this rule necessary? This rule fails to provide a fair chance to second dropper students who just gave JA only once😢😢😢

Dear prof, i know this isn't relevant to this video but i really wanted to ask this : I genuinely want to give jee again next year i gave it for the first time in 2023 qnd could not qualify mains by a really small margin and i regret it so much, but my parents aren't agreeing to it, they say i will waste another year, how do i convince my parents that i know what i have to do to improve and this wouldn't really be a waste of year, its just me trying to improve my chances to get into a better college instead of just settling for a college through kcet in bangalore

It not the working rules and problem solving level of mathematics but deep understanding of mathematics statistics along with stochastic process is essential required to to exell in fundamental scince like physics, chmistry and almost all braches of engineering.

Someone may please disagree with me, but I strictly believe that Mechanical and Civil are the most imp. branch not only for engg. but also for human life in general. We will not forget the Odhisha nightmare. Also for the development of any nation infrastructure is the very key parameter which everybody look because it is clearly visible and physically felt by the humans.

I was not very interested about mathematics in plus 2 level. I just practised enough to score safe marks whereas I was extremely interested in Physics. But during my electrical engineering days at NIT Patna I actually started enjoying mathematics in courses like Network Analysis and Synthesis, signals and system, Control System and Communication system.

I wanted to apply abroad but couldn’t due to some financial issues. I continued with jee for the past two years but this process has drained my mental health a lot. Sir i have cleared my jee mains with 99.87percentile this year as a partial second dropper , when i was in my class 12 i got selected in the NDA National defence academy , when i was in my second term i was out from the institute due to an injury , I had two months left for jee mains and gave the exam got 93 percentile in 2022 mains and joined sant longwal institute of engineering technology in punjab , this year i again gave jee mains and got 99.87 percentile and this is enough to get any branch in any NIT , I just want your advice sir what should i do!?should I join NIT or continue here!? ( my interest is in mechanical and the only problem with my present institute is not good faculty and labs)! Waiting for your reply!
