The official trailer for Iji by Remar Games. The song is from the Iji soundtrack. Music Composed by Chris Geehan & Dan Byrne-McCullough ( www.hyperduck.co.uk/ )
The video itself took about two days, large parts were screenshotted manually frame by frame since the movie recording program was a bit iffy. Props to VirtualDub though, I used it to put the whole thing together and sync the music.
You may recognize certain graphics from one of my other games, Garden Gnome Carnage. I actually made these a few years ago for Iji, and later reused them in GGC, not the other way around.

The first time I played Iji was in 2010 I think. I still regularly come back to it and listen to its music when I'm playing other games. I played Iji when I was 11 years old and the memory of it never faded.

Don't let the graphics fool you. It's one of the best games ever made. Better yet the it's free. The graphics may look like they were done in MS Paint, but the gameplay & story are pure epic. With it's thought provoking branching story, player choice, exploration, & cinematic platforming this game is what you get when you cross Another World & Flashback with Deus Ex & Symphony of the Night.

Sadly it's not going to happen, he mentioned on his website that he's not going to work on a sequel. It's hard to believe that despite being his most popular game he isn't fond of it himself. On the other hand, I don't think he minds if someone else made a sequel, as long as it's freeware (good luck finding someone willing to do that)

There is no sequel on this game because on the ending you see iji throw her gun on the floor that means she doesnt want to fight anymore and why kind of alien gonna invade the earth this time? Tasen is over and komato dont want to come to the earth again. But if someone make a sequel that means there is another type of alien or maybe the high command order komato to come back

Tell them to download the game _for free_ from the author's site and then leave him a donation through Paypal, it's almost the exact same thing as paying for downloading it on Steam.

@Old Liquid Well you can always advertise it yourself in various indie groups on Steam. Valve would take a not insignificant chunk of the author's profits if he put it up as a paid download, plus he'd have the hassle of paying the deposit fee, filing a bunch of other paperwork, maintaining the Steam storefront, taxes, providing support, et.c. Also Paypal is fine, especially for international transfers into other currencies.

yeah me too. I started thinking about it recently because a few of my friends are really into Risk of Rain and Risk of Rain 2 and something about the depth to RoR's antagonist especially reminded me of Iji. Lo and behold, there's an Iji easter egg in RoR, and it turns out that Iji was one of the games that served as inspiration for RoR and RoR2. I just find it beautiful and poetic that there seems to be this never ending cycle where a game will inspire an entire generation of new game developers, who in turn will go on to inspire another generation of game makers.

Iji 1.7 has been released, which should work better with modern computer, and has some other changes and improvements. If you experience problems with the sound in 1.7, please try changing the sample rate in the Speakers settings in Windows.

Truly one of the most awesome games ever. This game has what most of the "professional" (and by professional, I mean heavy and expensive games) don't. It has a huge number of Easter eggs, many ways to progress through story line, many alternative routes, funny and awesome gameplay, variety, and again, so many Easter eggs. This should really have a HD remake for the new generation consoles. Even in 2D it's already awesome. Congratulations Daniel.

The story, music and character development as well as the combat system and the decisions you make plus all the little secrets always give me a nostalgic feeling when thinking about it. Amazing game, played it a few years ago and to this day this game placed a question on my head that has plagued my mind since then. I genuinely can't answer which is the correct option, revenge or mercy on the aliens. I love the feeling this game gave me the first time I played it, I replayed it instantly in the opposite way to see what happens, reminded me of undertale in that way. Sincerely thank you for making this game :)

This is not only the best free game I've played, but one of the best games I've ever played. Everything you did in the game felt like it mattered, and the core mechanics felt incredibly tight. An absolute masterpiece of its time. I'd be absolutely delighted to see more like it.

I just saw a Reddit thread asking for niche/weird game recommendations, and this was the first game that popped into my head. I don't think it's weird, but I never ever met anyone that knew it. I consider myself lucky to have found it though! I still have so many good memories of playing and having a blast with it. In fact, after writing that Reddit post, I feel the urge to replay it and relive those awesome moments I had with Iji, such a gem of a game even 15 years later. I'd be super happy if you ever decide to do more with this game, you deserve all the praise and support!

I wish I could describe how I feel. Frustrated and inspired are the two biggest words that come to mind. Playing through the game, I grew increasingly negative towards the limiting mechanics. Looking back, though, it was one of the most special gaming experiences of my life, and it's something I'll look back on fondly, lamenting the fact that games will likely refuse to learn from the way pathos can push gameplay mechanics.

I have played every single one of your games including the scrappacks, and this is your greatest feat. I have spent tons of time replaying the game to be a pacifist, finding all the secrets and posters and stuff like that. Boss fights are all unique and amazing. I love it!

Ended up re-watching this after years and now I'm accidentally even more excited for 1.7, which is saying something. Imagine my surprise when I checked your homepage, deciding to re-download it and see if I could get it to run sort-of-smoothly, on the very day you posted the news of the new update. Just had to say, I really admire the time and energy you're putting in to make Iji play nice with modern systems - all the new stuff is an added bonus, too. I've played pretty much everything you've released and some of my favourite games ever are Remar titles, but I've been especially itching to go back to Iji.

Still playing this 8 years later. No game even comes close to the incredible emotional impact this had on me. I don't even know what it is, but Daniel Remar got something right here. The game's only shortcoming is that it has an ending. BTW, game is really fun to play on a xbox 360 gamepad. Though the game doesn't support it, I use joytokey to give me control. ^^

I know if a sequel ever comes out, I'd pay good money for it. This game is just Sci-fi perfection. The Emotionally driven story feels more real than the atmosphere most AAA titles try to cast. Pure awesome.

This game is absolutely amazing, I'm playing through it right now, I believe I'm near the end... but I can already tell that it's amazingly replayable, and I'm going to be playing through it a bunch more times. To the creator of this: Thank you for this wonderful experience, games like this are exactly the reason why I love the hobby. I had a bunch of games I was trying out... Spore, WAR beta, RTK XI, The Orange Box as a whole... dropped all of them in an instant for this when I tried it.

I just completed it. This game totally OWNS. The action, storyline, RPG system: everything was damn perfect! Oh and the soundtrack just blew my mind especially the song that plays in the end boss fight, made it really epic. Looking forward to more of your games, mate!

Been looking for this game. I also wonder when we'll get a... 3D Remake. "IJI 3D" and with a bit redefined gameplay. Classic IJI Mode - You and your enemies can't aim and can shoot horizontally only. Remake IJI Mode - You and enemies can aim anywhere. Imagine IJI rocket jumping... or no, wait.

I've been replaying Iji recently, and I'd just like to say how fantastic it is. So much detail put into it, from secret rooms to just little features like Sector 8's vending machines. I've finished my Extreme run and am now trying both Ultimortal difficulty and to get a quick completion time on a normal run.

I got version 1.3 last night and I don't think Iji could get any more -perfect- at this point. The changes in plot with the changes to the now pure Pacifist Mode (0 kills! woot!) are great and the inclusion of a new secret weapon and relocation of logbooks for pacifist runs. Brilliant..just brilliant. If 'professional' game award shows included indie games for Game of the Year, THIS should of won it. This is how games should be. I just discovered this game few days ago and I'm absolutely in love with it. The graphics never really bothered me at all, since they simply reminded me of how games used to look like; I suppose I'm a retro gamer at heart. I'm still working on my BSc in computer science, with focus on game development and AI and I would love to get a chance to take a crack at "upgrading" the graphics, with your permission.

Just downloaded and have ran about 2-3+ hours into the game. The story is interesting and the changes based on who, what and how many you kill add serious replay storywise. Then theres the unaccessable areas that require high cracking skills, 4 difficulties, unlockables, secrets. This is just plain awesome...a fine example of how a great game is made!

That's why I also 'wish' if there is someone thinking the same, and already have better skills (and have time to spare) to make manga out of this game, oooh I will be so happy and grateful! xD Well...not that I am 'just' waiting for anyone to do get what I want, I do have my desire to make it myself, ha, starts from simply sketches, then illustrations, short comic, and finally the fan art manga later. Thanks for putting hope on me about 'making it myself' part lolol, I... have low self-confidence, but practice does make perfect.

Great music, HyperDuckMusic, they really set the mood of the game. Just finished it on aggressive storyline, without knowing that you could complete it by being passive as well, providing a slightly different storyline. What a deep game!

If anything, you've proven how much harder it is to go around not trying to kill everything. It really puts a nice morality perspective that most games don't have or fail to elagantly execute (ie:Halo/Bioshock). That, and it's nice to have an entire stat dedicated to giving people a boot-to-the-head. Also cracking, very fun turning enemies into walking mines.

undertale is nowhere near as close to being the best game ever.

The story in this game and gameplay is fucking amazing. It is Cave Story, just darker

@Ultimortal - man, I'll wait even 6 years for it if I have to. The stuff is just THAT GOOD. Of course I understand that to create a game of THIS size , you need to input a lot of work and time. Still I have hope that you'll make a sequel someday cause the ending of Iji has a lot of potential and leave even more questions. Oh and yeah - Thanks for updating Iji to 1.3 - I'm getting it right now :) Cheers and have a happy new year :D

One of the most EPIC platform shooter I have EVER played, trust me I've played almost every single one. I really wish there was a second part. It was just so great that I wanted more.

Holy crap! I've played through this game so many times, yet this just convinced me to give the Ultimortal difficulty another try. It really is an amazing game.
