The iKamper Skycamp 2.0 roof top tent is considered by some, to be in the upper echelon in the world of roof top tents.
Transitioning from the Smittybilt Overlander XL to the Skycamp 2.0 was a massive leap forward, but not with out its growing pains.
While demanding a hefty investment of close to $4000.00, the Skycamp 2.0 is far from perfect out of the box.
We try to remediate some of the issues we are experiencing with the tent, wish us luck!
Sorry this Vlog is a long one 😭

Hi! I had the same issue, but then realized it was because the small sized mattress was not pushed back far enough. It lines up evenly parallel to the end of the ladder side as it folds down. The small sized mattress gets pushed as far back as possible.

With your condensation mattress and modified mattress, too thick to close. With my original mattress, the maximum was 2 pillows and 2 sleeping bags pushed to the edge. I couldn’t put any more. After swapping out with deflatable mattresses, I can put 4 pillows and 4 sleeping bags.

I had major problems with the shipping of mine. They lost it in the shipping process. Then they found a few days later. The tracking number was generated but someone forgot to put it in the database. Then the primary trucking company (ABF Freight) told me we can't deliver to you and ponded it off on another trucking company. I am still awaiting the arrival of my iKamper. This is my 2nd iKamper. My first buying experience was great. iKamper must have changed shipping companies because this ABF Freight has been a nightmare!

I'm shopping right now for a RTT . I'm between the Ikamper and the free spirit Odyssey. I wonder if those supports when they fold down and laid on top of your first mattress.... could you possibly make your mattress narrower so that those arms would not lay on the mattress at all and then you might be able to get your anti-condensation mat and anything else.. another thing I wonder when you zip all the windows up tight and you're pulling it down does the tent hold a certain amount of air for a few minutes until you squish it down ..is it possible to leave a zipper open? Enjoyed your video and the beautiful country you're in..

Thank you for the video. It was very helpful. I have the smaller Skykamp 2X. I previously had the ARB Simpson III which was a great tent with a very comfortable 2.5" mattress. It opened like a dream and you could leave all your gear in it......but closing it was a real pain!! Why ... it sits on a lifted JKUR with a Smittybilt exo-skeleton roof rack. It sits very high. Even with 4 hinge-steps it was back and forward tucking-in the tent to get the the cover on. I thought iKamper 2X would be a good alternative. It is and it is not! The quality of the tent is great. However, the iKamper 2X ver2 mattress is poor 1.8 cm. foam. It sucks for anyone who sleeps on their side like I do. So off to Y-Tube videos to get help!. (BTW: the Smittybilt roof rack prevents the ladder from attaching to the 2X tent frame. You have to make your own mount) As your video shows, changing the mattress is problematic because of the hydraulic strut clearance and the fact that the hoop hinge pivot point is close to the floor creating the problem of pushing against the mattress as the top closes. A thicker mattress exacerbates the problem. (If only iKamper had made the shell 1"-2" deeper, there would be room for a thicker mattress and better storage for gear!!) After reading the "Rhino Offroad" review of the QOMOTOP self inflating mattress I decided that a self-inflating mattress was the way to go. I could not get the QOMOTOP mattress in Canada so I bought a KingCamp Full XL 3 inch equivalent. It is a tight fit so the tent cannot be closed with the mattress inflated; also, there is potential damage to the tent by the closed strut. I bought an air pump with an internal 6Ahr rechargeable battery to inflate/deflate the tent in about 2.5 min. (Woowind Electric Air Pump Portable Rechargeable Air Mattress Pump). If you camp in the rain/mud a lot like I do a mattress protector is a good idea. (LUCID Breathable Machine Washable-Zippered Enclosure-Removeable Non-Slip Mattress Topper Cover) Thanks again for the video
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 2 года назад
I am glad you found the video helpful! Yes had they designed the tent with just a bit more volume inside it would have been a game changer. However they must’ve thought no one wants to leave bedding inside LOL. The best solution I’ve seen to date is to use XPEDS in place of the original mattress. Many people have said that this helps tremendously when packing up and gives you the ability to leave some bedding inside. My only gripe with that option is.. XPEDS ain’t cheap! You would have to invest another $600.00-$800.00 dollars on a tent that is already 4K dollars. For us it wasn’t worth it to continue trying to “FIX” a less than optimal design flaw…
@MethRx99
@MethRx99 3 года назад
Perhaps the difference in foam mattress sizes is due to differences in dimensions of a “king sized” mattress (76” x 80”) vs a “California king” (72” x 84”) sized mattress. It would be interesting to note the actual dimensions of both foam pads. Thanks for the videos, guys. I appreciate them all.

Oh, I’m certain you have LOL! We saw those same videos, that is why we spent our hard earned money to acquire a iKamper Skycamp 2.0. However, after we experienced the issues that we had with ours and did some investigation. All isn’t what it seems. Most iKamper reviews that you see on RU-vid are sponsored reviews or iKamper has sent the product out for review for “free” with stipulations. Stipulations such as the review can’t relay any negative feedback on the tent. You also might not be aware that there are several different versions of the Skycamp. The Original Skycamp seemed to operate as advertised. The Skycamp 2.0 us any many others around the world received last year did not. Thank you so much for the positive vibes watching commenting and subscribing to the channel we sincerely appreciate it!🥰

I really wish I would’ve found this video before purchasing. Just set mine up yesterday and have noticed that closing it is a bit of a problem along with storing things inside of it. I was hoping that a rooftop tent of this quality would make things easier but it seems to have made things slightly more difficult than a ground tent. Hopefully time and repetition will make a difference.
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 3 года назад
Dang sorry to hear that, hopefully we can save you some time. From our extensive research this is what we found. In its OEM form you wont be able to store anything in it and closing it is a chore to say the least. However there are options. 1) Sell it. 2) Change the mattress out to the memory foam mattress we used. This improved functionality and comfort. You still won’t be able to store anything in it tho. 3) Get the Exped mattress set or the cheaper Amazon version. If you plan on keeping the tent the 3rd option is the most expensive and the best. From what we have heard if you go the Exped route this will give you the extra volume needed to close the tent properly and store items in it. The down side is $$$. Expeds are pricey and you need two. Some people seem to love this tent and don’t seem to be having the problems we had. Our unit was so bad, had we continued using it as it came from the factory it was only a matter of time before it would have either broken the shell, the cable or the latch itself. We sincerely hope this information is helpful for you and helps you make a decision going forward. It was really stressful spending that much money on a tent and the experience we had.

This vid and info was awesome! I own the Rocky 2.0 Sky Kamp and that has been my problem when trying to secure it. My question is once you get the king size mattress did you cut the memory foam in 1/2 to replicate the original mattress that came with the iKamper? Where did you get the condensation mat from and did those pieces needed to be cut as well?
@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 3 года назад
You can get the condensation mats from local sports stores or Amazon, but if you add them to the tent you definitely can’t close it. If you do the mattress swap it will close a little easier, but it still doesn’t close as advertised by iKamper. We got frustrated with the tent and iKamper so we sold our tent. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xpmQsXjTEoI.html

@KRTLyfe
@KRTLyfe 3 года назад
No, it never worked easy. Factory out the box it was a royal pain to close. Anti condensation pads make it impossible to close. The only good options are. 1) Sell it. 2) invest in a softer mattress but you still can’t use anti condensation pads. 3) Invest another $800.00 for the Exped Mattresses. We didn’t test the last option but in theory this should work and give you extra space to leave your bedding as well.

Your Skycamp could be slightly different, based on a few different variables. In the video we show where the struts and or framing/folding parts of the tent were binding up in the mattress material leaving permanent pressure marks in the memory foam. We pondered that, for us we couldn’t fathom spending damn near another $400 to resolve a problematic tent. Honestly at this price point the Skycamp 2.0 should come with an Exped. Lol oh and you have to have two to cover the entire sleeping area of the tent. So yeah a lot more than $400.00 dollars more around the ballpark of $700.00 $800.00 with taxes and shipping. Thank you! Maybe so should try a couple of day trips maybe not overnights, then gradually stay out longer and longer and before you know it y’all will be out for weeks! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Interesting fact tho, we recently discovered that there is a 10-15 degree difference in comfort level between men and women. So I’m mixed race male and my wife is from Ukraine we can be in the same sleeping system and I will be sweating and she will be freezing... I say all that to say comfort while overlanding or camping is very important to some. Hopefully if you can get her comfortable you can get her out on the trails! Hope to see ya out there!

@@KRTLyfe almost every girl I date is an ice box while I on the otherhand have a resting temperature of 101.. I'm always hot it sucks. Current person in my life is all about the outdoors, camping, overlanding and road tripping cross country. So I'm set now.
