Hi Anna. The small snail u saw is called Siput. Put it in a separate bowl or can just put it in ur plate. How to eat it? U suck it. But the end part normally u dont eat. Normally its coconut sauce is very nice to mix a bit wt ur rice. Dont be afraid to put any sauce in ur rice. Normally , they wont charge just for the sauce. Enjoy❤ from Mazliza@ NorthPoint Ampang
Fyi, normally prawns/udang and squid/sotong are bit pricey. Ur ikan bakar stingray maybe around rm12.? Dont be afraid to ask the griller the price of the different fish available. Enjoy ur stay here. U guys shud migrate here. I think youll love it here like I do.❤
The beans that you disliked was petai. You are supposed to open it up to eat the beans inside together with the sambal belacan(spicy sauce) that is placed near all the greens. It is an acquired taste item, but it's good for your kidney's wellbeing.😅👌
That bean you can't eat is petai. You are supposed the eat only the bean inside and discard the pod/skin. It is also known as stink(y) beans as it has a strong smell. It is very good for the kidney and urinary tract. The wrinkly veg is peria katak or mini bitter gourd. The one you forgot the name is Okra or ladies fingers. That restaurant has an amazing selection of local food. I am hungry!
A complete meal for mixed rice in Malaysia dish consist at least as follow: 1. Rice, 2. One main protein ie fish or meat, or chicken etc (gravvy or not) 3. Vegetables ( gravvy or not), (cooked or fresh green) 4. Side protein ( additional) egg, anchovies, tempe, tauhu. 5. Hot and spicy sauce( sambal)
and another tip for u DanAnna..if u want to know if the malay nasi campur restaurant gud or not.when u see other races also eat at the restaurant not just da malay like this one, we see a lot of chinese also..100%.the food is gud
Siakap ikan bakar .. you cant go wrong. Ikan pari or sting ray sometimes the meat is a bit tough. Find fresh siakap, like at a fishing jetty. The meat is even better.
That bitter vegetable is called petai in Malay. You need to open the skin to take the seed inside. Only eat the seed together with rice, sambal etc. 3 out of 10 Malaysians like it. For me, I can even eat it raw just by itself. It's like addicted to ...you know 🤣
Like I said, if you want to enjoy Malay nasi campur have to eat it like the Malays do, i.e. use hand especially right hand..behind you there are sinks that you can wash your hands before and after eating.. you don't have to worry and don't be shy..😁 The green vegetable is not a spinach but it's called Pucuk Manis with sweet potatoes, you have to choose carefully the winged beans otherwise you'll get the old one..😁 We don't eat salted eggs like that..they should be mixed with the rice.. it's too salty man..! ha ha.. The price is reasonable as it in the city of Kuala Lumpur.. 👍☺️
Next time when you eat mixed rice, if there are many side dishes you want to take, you can put the side dish you want on another plate.. If everything is on the same plate, you will also have a hard time if you want to eat because your plate is full of side dishes...
Hello Dan Anna when you go to try nasi campur or ikan bakar you must asked them how to eat ikan bakag with the sauce and your rice you need to put a little sauce or kuah for more better.I hope you can explore so much much more Malay food and you will enjoy the all of foods.
I have eaten at that restaurant several times before...the food is good and lots of variety..but bit expensive especially the ikan bakar. It is in middle of KL so definitely more expensive than out of KL. There are other cheaper places around the chow kit area. You'll have to explore.
4:45: dat one we called it siput sedut.a type of snail..and the dish called masak lemak cili padi.its so gud.but to eat it u must sucks the flesh out of the shell and its really hard work..i personally luv it but only it at my home coz its quite messy to eat it at restaurant in front of other people😃..sum people dont mind it.
@@dananna8614 anyway the chicken dat Dan eat..it called ayam masak merah..if it was spicy..its the best ayam masak merah bcoz sum other restaurant they make it sweet which i dont like it.
Siakap = Seabass / Baramundi. Those snails is Cerithidea obtusa. You need to suck from iether end by force. Taste good either cook in coconut milk or in chilli fry. If you don't like your plate overload or messy, you can take another plate & fill it up with your choice or a bowl if it's soup dish. You don't have to heap it on top of your rice. That way, you get to taste enjoy more dishes. The one Ana doesn't like is stinky beans or better known is petai. It can be prepared either by roasting it or like the salted egg, brine it in vinegar & salt. The smell can kill you though😂😂 but we common folks love the taste of stinky beans
A spread of deliciousness. Malay "lauk-pauk". Well balanced with proteins , vegetables and raw "ulams". This will make you both healthy and satisfying, I guess
gentle remind .. most of Malay side dish (lauk) or vegetables the best way to enjoy it is to eat with main dish (rice) and you can combine with your other side dish with the amount or every dish you will decided yourself. If the side dish is too salty.. then you need to take a bit and so on. thats how we eat our nasi campur (mixed rice)
The Sting Ray dish in Malay is, called "ikan Pari bakar"!!!😋 When ever you visit Malacca.. Please, look for "ikan parang Asam Pedas" that's Malacca's famous dish, Which also my favourite dish and eat with hot rice.. it's really delicious 😋 n Its fingers lickin good 👍🤷😋
Wow that's a big buffet of "nasi campur"..so many dish..ikan bakar is my favourite too, its quite pricey but its worth it. The star is the dip sauce, ikan pari(stingray) and ikan kembong(mackerel) are my favourite, keep exploring guys 👍
The first vegetable that Anna had (which she liked) is called sweet leaf (Sauropus androgynus) or locally known as cekur manis. The (overly bitter bean that shouldn’t be eaten with the skin) petai is an acquired taste 😂 Ikan bakar literally means grilled fish and that includes stingray. The fish mentioned earlier by the guy who gave you the stingray; siakap is a local seabass. The ladies finger (okra) that you had wasn’t so good because the older and bigger it is, the more fibrous it is. But this place seems nice. May I know the name of this restaurant?
next time bring a local to accompany you guys to place like this, must be overwhelming by all those malays buffet foods served there. and also you guys dont know whats what on the menu and the know how to (consume) some stuff, sorry you guys had to experience it like this. but hopefully both of you will not get discourage to experience it more. like i said, just bring a local friend to teach you 'how' for the first time, the second, third, forth time will be like a walk in the park.
4:30 it's snails. you suck it from the bottom. i see your plate is too dry. If you put some gravy it would taste better. ikan=fish, bakar=grill (in this context) so "ikan bakar"=grilled fish
The food orange colour sauce is curry or gulai. The yellow colour sauce is masak lemak. The red colour sauce is sambal tumis. Some cook with meat and some cook with fish. The last food that you didn't like is "petai". You don't like it because you eat the skin. Petai skin cannot eat. You should open that skin to get petai inside. Its delicious, seriously. You should try it one more time
@@dananna8614 Thank you. Its okey if you not eat that stinky bean again😄. But if you will, hope you will know how to open it😊. Once again enjoy your visits and hope you enjoy being here in Malaysia😎
U have to peel the stinky beans .not eat the skin ...its bitter taste..that kacang bottle must eat with sambal belacan . I can give u idea next time u eat take the lauk separate plate..and then u can eat .
Wow thats a lot for single sitting. Normally we like to make it simple with single or the most 3 side dishes so the we don't overwhelm our taste bud. Food is a cultural thing your grow up with and cultuvate the taste and preferences. E.g. the stink beans and sambal belacan is a must for some people but can be repulsive for some others.
The raw vegetables Malaysian call "ulam" normally we eat it with sambal belacan (shrimp pace + chillies) or sambal tempoyak (fermented durian + chillies)
@@dananna8614 The dipping sauce for Stingray is 'Air Asam'(Tamarind juice mixed with sliced chillies, onions, tomato & a bit of coarse sugar) & 'Cili/Sambal Kicap'(Soy sauce mixed with sliced chillies, onion, lime/calamansi juice & a bit of coarse sugar)..
U guys are really adventurous with your food. I challange u try be more adventurous using your bare hands to eat. Its more enjoyable with malay & indian food. Enjoy your stay in Malaysia.
that green vegetables goes with sambal guys, you have to dip it in sambal, at 6:35 there's 3 different types of sambals to choose from, that petai (stinky bean) is bitter because you didn't dip it with sambal, it will taste super delicious with sambal. just remember whenever you see green vegetables around that look like it's not been cooked, there's always sambal nearby to eat it with.
Siakap fish is a type of Sea bass/asian sea bass. Normaly, the stingrays sell in restaurants are the small type ones, dwarft whiprays, (we call it ikan ketuka), however, I've no idea about the one you had in the restaurant.
You must be overwhelmed by the sheer variety of choices there in the restaurant. They are all look very tasty and tempting anyone to take everything at a go. But that is quite impossible. So idea of enjoying food at nasi campur restaurant is to come back again the next day, and the next and so on. Each day that you come to the restaurant you take different dishes than previously taken. By doing that you get to taste all of it without put a burden on your tummy. And you get to enjoy it every day until all the dishes tested out. That's how most the local did it.
Most of the "greens" you have on your plate, people eat it for their medicinal properties rather than the taste. We don't have "salad' in our culture, but we have "ulam". Ulam is the raw vegetables/plants/leaves we eat as a side dish... Nasi = rice Lauk = any kind dishes with cooked protein and vegetables, usually cooked with gravies/soups/sauces meant to flavour the rice. Ulam = explained above Sambal = kinda like dips, stuffs that give extra kick, heat, and/or flavour the whole thing on your plate. And then we have condiments like kicap (soy sauce), budu (anchovies sauce), cencalok (shrimp sauce), etc. There's only 1 rice, but there are many kinds of lauks, ulams, sambals, and condiments. There... that's Malay Rice Meal 101 short course for you.
I'm surprised you guys finished the whole plate. The experience could be so much better for you guys had there been any locals who could give you briefings. For example, you could have taken some gravies, from a few different lauk (dishes), and pour it on your rice to flavour them. Usually people don't charge for gravies. Even if they do, it's a negligible sum. Another example, the "ikan bakar" (grilled fish) should be had with the dips they gave you. The dips usually made sour to counter the fishiness of the fish. And also, the stingray, the bones if small it's chewable and edible. Just chew it well enough.
The best if someone guide you guys to eat there. That place we called NASI CAMPUR place or translate to english MIX RICE. not about mix the rice but put rice in your place and take what ever you want to eat. Simple But the you can eat it if you know about Malay food are. Its about combination Example you choose ikan bakar, its will taste better dipded in the sauce provided and get a salad section to completed the meal. If you choose curry, its will goes well with fried chicken or fish with a bit of sambal Belacan and vegetables Maybe next time If you wanna try nasi lemak, it goes well with fried chicken. As for leat spicy if you can't handle spicy
this is how u guys eat nasi campur and its the correct way too...please take a lot of dishes food as possible cos i like to see u eat a lot...if can try each and all the food...at least take 4 plates with full of food
With that array of dishes, you will be spoilt for choices..yummy. That is stinkybean or petai the one you don't like. You don't eat with the skin. Peel off the skin and eat only the bean.
Siakap is sea bass. If not sure how to eat, ask the staff before you pick the food and they will tell you the right combination especially if you choose raw veges we call "ulam".
we Malaysians usually eat ulam (raw vegetables) and grilled fish with those sauces (sambal belacan or sambal kicap)... by dipping it or directly pouring it on the fish.
The one u eat tat looks like a cucumber is actually a bittergourd. The one u take is a small kind and it is much more bitter den the usual big bittergourd. It’s very good in health benefits and I do enjoy it. Hope u like it 🙂
The beans that u dislike one we call it Petai. But, it is good if u eat always coz scientifically it proven to reduce high blood preassure & prevent dibetic as well..
Ooo the screw snail.. or balitong. U suck suck the top to get it to somewhat block the hole. Then turn the other way and give it a hard suck. It will pop out..
Hi Dan & Anna, I would suggest you to connect and get help from local people when you want to choose or try something so that you will get right information and informative for you to learn about our foods. We Malaysian are always very helpful to serve you. 😊😊😊
Anna, ikan is Fish. Bakar is grill. So ikan bakar means Grill Fish. Stingray is called PARI in Malay. Note: grill fish is eaten wit sauce. You take the meat and dip in sauce example Assam Sauce (Tamarind cili sauce) or the Black Soya Sauce with cili. The cilis are usually very hot spicy because they use birds eye cili padi small cilis. The salads/greens too are eaten with the Sambal Belacan sauce usually next to the greens or in the stone pestle bowls. The okra or brinjals is known as BENDI in malay. The wing beans (Four Angle Beans) is kachang botor
for me a bit quite pricey for this kind foods what you took it because i see only ulam vegetables and one fish. it should at least max rm45 what i see.. maybe you should try many more restaurants like this and we have a lot in KL.. you can make comparisons for the prices.just my two cents comment. enjoy holidays and have a great day..!!!
To eat Nasi Campur(mix rice) you need to be expert how to combine between what you choose. If you know how to mix everything will be delicious. For example the stink bean that you don't like you have to eat with the sambal and rice. And you have ask the how to eat that snail that you not take. Siput sedut(sucking snail) you have to sucking the flesh out.
@@dananna8614 for the first time its ok to try one by one. Next step you already know the taste and ready to mix what you choose. That's why we called Nasi Campur(Mix the variety of the dishes and eat with the rice).
The price is reasonable because u took so many dishes and also the ikan bakar price between range 15 to 30 ringgit depend on the size and type of fish. The ulam and the bitter bean must goes with sambal belacan. Its very enjoy by using hand to eat
love to see you guys enjoying malaysians food...most of the side dish normally malaysian eat it with rice, example - 1 spoon of rice with 1 bite of fish that you dip in chili sauce or sambal. - the ulam or the greens like petai that you dont like the first ulam that you eat,you need to dip it in sambal belacan and eat it with rice, eat it raw will taste bitter and smells aweful 😅 that apply to all ulam or greens then only it will taste better..the combination is everything like the grill stingray it serve with air asam and chili ketchup, its the sauce..by dipping the stingray meat in the sauce only you get the perfect taste of it. 😁 ill give you some tips..just ask the local or store staff how to eat the food that you select to get the perfect taste or combination. 😉 try to use hands like local when you eat to get the perfect amount of food and taste. 👍
