Ikea Butcher block vs. Hardwood Reflections Butcher Block

Not all butcher blocks are created equal. Some manufacturers choose to sell butcher blocks with particleboard centers covered with a veneer. And while this may be ok in some applications, if you are looking to customize your new butcher block countertop, we strongly suggest choosing a solid stave hardwood butcher block. Not only will you be able to cut and machine it to fit your style, but for around the same price as a composite and veneer butcher block, you will be able to enjoy the quality of a solid butcher block far longer.
Discover how a solid Birch Hardwood Reflections Butcher Block found at Home Depot stacks up against the Karlby Block sold by IKEA.
You can buy your Hardwood Reflections Butcher Block from Home Depot.

You changed my mind on IKEA. Was there last night. Your prices are slightly higher. Worth it. Solid wood vs compressed particle board, easy decision. Thank you

Wait, did they just router particle board? Really guys? Also, why did they go the wrong way on the router?

The router was going in the wrong direction. On an outside cut it should be going counter clockwise.

I hate to be critical, but you could have stopped with the first cut that showed the particle board inside.

There are advantages to laminate butcher blocks over solid wood. I've seen a lot of people dealing with cupped Reflections solid wood butcher blocks. Many RU-vid videos about it. Also need to be oiled regularly if sealed with oil. If finished with polyurethane, pool of water can leave spots. Laminate is actually more stable and water proof in these situations.

I stained it walnut and it looks gorgeous. im moving and need a second desk for the new place so im going right back to home depot for another hardwood reflections butcher block.

The ikea countertops have become a trend over the years in the tech space with people wanting to make themselves long desks. Being that these (due to being used as a desk) are never supported in the middle for a large section, I always tell them you will get sag due to weight. And even damage if you use monitor arms. I tell them these are just a thin veneer on top of particleboard. And I tell them for the same price or $50 more, you can get solid wood butcher block from a big box store and grab $15 finish. And it will be far more durable for this application.

No question, the feeling of a solid wood desk or any furniture is different/better. But what about vulnerability to drinks or even fingerprints? Is there a way to seal it? Need a desk for my room and I am on a search.

Your prices are way better given that its wood most ikea countertops bend as with time the particle boards in the core cant keep up with SOLID WOOD . I am surprised you even have to compete with IKEA as there is no comparision ! one is fake wood topped with veneer and another is SOLID hardwood with alternating wood grain pattern to prevent bending. THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE videos like these out there as you will find lots of people not knowing the quality of an ikea and believing they have hard wood in their kitchen . I AM ROOTING for you ! grt products ....we need you to get the word out more !

I know this is a promotional video but don't make home owners think they can cut a table top free hand with a circular saw and more importantly there is a cut direction Arrow on that Bosch router. The router chatters and kicks back because you are running it in the wrong direction. No running it clock wise does not reduce chipping. That being said I am picking up a couple of these slabs for a customer over the Ikea ones.

Was really happy with my block from you guys, though during sanding noticed a lot of imperfections (dents, cracks) on one of the sides. a bit disappointing as I had planned to use that side. I mostly blame Home Depot for their shipping... but still was bummed. Regardless. it makes any ikea product look like a joke and is definitely the way to go

What saw (brand and size) are you using to cut the countertops? I went to Home Depot and asked to have it cut for me and they refused saying their saw machine was not big enough. I then went to the selection with all the saws and asked which one I would need to cut it from it’s current 74” to what I need which is 54” long. Even then I was told none of their saws would do the job. Yet here you are with what looks like a simple saw cutting the Home Depot countertop.
@GPG7754
@GPG7754 4 года назад
All you need is a circular saw. I would suggest a makita 7 1/4 inch size which are around $150 at home Depot but you'll have it for life or you can rent one there for about half that much which I think is a rip off.
@SouthBaySteelers

They cut lumber, ie, boards. This is not lumber. It’s a finished product. Not only that, HD stores have a sliding chop saw. So they were correct in stating their saw isn’t big enough

Nice job, the Hardwood reflections has a darker side, if you choose that most of the knots are cracked and empty so be careful, you can always epoxy it if that is the side you really want. We are trying to consider other options. We missed it so we are just going to use it as its just a top for a room we have for working, the flip side is better, just make sure you oil and condition really well ASAP. For the price and not for my kitchen its an okay choice. For the kitchen I would spend the money and get a quality wood as I never had crack and knot issues before.

Be nice if you guys could get the live edge oiled acacia in stock or at least make the clear coat one made from 100% wood , so people can actually sand it and cut it to make the finish match. Also, use a harder and food safe clear coat on your products. Your products scratch so easily.

@@HardwoodReflections You guys are definitely gaining mind share in the PC community for desk building! Was looking into the standard Karlby+Alex style desk and the sagging in the middle is a well known problem for the particle board. It looks like the Birch for people willing to self finish is gaining a lot of interest! And I have seen reports that even the 6'x2' 1"x 1" pre finished Acacia blocks don't have any sort of sag even with a triple monitor mount in the center. Considering getting one myself soon!
