I might put it sidewise so that the short side is against the door. Then, you can actually buy a cat door for your patio door for them (I used to have one, they work great).
I'm going to do something similar with a space the size of that balcony but instead of that small thing, I'm going to cover the balcony with the wire fence so both of us can be in the same place and they have more space.
hi, i hope you still read this. i wanted to say THANK YOU for this idea. i built one with 4 henjes shelfs just these days and today was the cats first visit in the catio. it was pretty easy to do and also not too expensive, even if i painted the shelfs avocado-green... cause avocado-green exists (... and since they get wet by the rain). i dont know what exactly you mean by "4000$ cat" - breed or vet? but i got you. my two cats have a really long story with the vet when kittens (non breed. just adopted from shelter and loved a lot...) and there went all my savings, round about as much. they turned a year not long ago, now both are fine and happy with the catio. :)
Hey! Next time I’ll def give a longer clip! I try to keep my audience engaged so i keep the clips short. I can be ADD so i try to do it fast. But I’m still getting used to RU-vid.. and realizing people are here to chill and watch my videos, i can take my time on the next one! Thanks for your comment!
I'm SO hApPy that there was NO sawing or drilling involved!!! It so happens that I am returning some tiles to Ikea tomorrow. Then...I'm doing THIS!!!@ I Love your cattitude!!!
They havent discontinued the racks yet, so this is great! I have no heavy hand tools, so I’m glad this hack only requires a staple gun! 🙂 Personally, I’ll need a mosquito net wrapped around the chicken wire. But, what I’d love to know is how to secure this to the balcony!
Every cat owners should know those plants are toxic for cats, so watch out for that and I see at 0:15 your cat are chewing the plants, I also see you have those plants like aloe is toxic for pet. So pls don't take the risk n u should not let them be unsafe. Just FYI.
Hey thanks so much for your comment! Yes. I have done research on toxic plants since i do have a garden and indoor plants. However, each cat is different. Mine have no interest in chewing plants since switching my fur babies to a raw food diet. I think they’re receiving nutrients they were looking for in the plants? Not sure! But thanks!
Verry small cat run but creative...another option would have been to use cat netting to just close in the patio and add some plants...that way there with you but still safe...no barries between snuggles
@@EllenBeal hey :) i have two sliding glass doors… one in my bedroom and one in my living room. So i put the catio on my bedroom door because i don’t use it. And i access the patio from the other door. My original plan was to do the catio entrance on a window, but i figured the door was going to better for my specific situation
awww lmao .. my bf is allergic too and my bengal actually gives him no problems. our savannah cat gave us both problems for the first night then it went away.... and I'm not even allergic lol but yeah, they say bengals are the most "hypoallergenic" out of all cats, even though they are not considered fully hypoallergenic if that makes sense
Thanks so much for the idea. I think it's smart to use a cheap item such as shelf from Ikea. Time and cost saving. I'm going to do something similar on my balcony (even though it is covered by net). I know my cat will enjoy jumping from shelf to shelf. And, yes, adding some enrichment as toys, blankets and plants will make my cats time there even more enjoyable! Thank you , lady! Keep the videos coming!
Yes but only under supervision!!! That’s why i had to get the catio done. One time tai (the Bengal) went missing in 5 minutes while i was making his food.. i checked everywhere for him and he was no where to be found, i had to call out of work and look around the neighborhood. Long story short, he actually fell and landed in my downstairs neighbors gated fence and hid there for several hours because my neighbor at the time had 4+ outdoor/indoor cats and he is a bit of a scaredy cat. So we got him back and from then on… never again. He was also my first cat so i didn’t know they could jump down a whole floor lol. So yeah… not anymore haha
Bit of a rude comment towards the wrong enemy. They never told anyone to go adopt not shop as well. You should instead be redirecting your frustration with the actual problem! The owners who don't spay and neuter their cats and let them roam around outdoors to breed. People buying bred cats aren't the reason for the large amounts of strays or shelter pets. The irresponsible owners letting their cats breed outside and not caring or doing anything about it are the problem. People abandoning their cats to the streets, dumpsters, shelters with no remorse or proper consideration beforehand are also the culprits. For personal preference reasons as well: You can encourage people to adopt, but many people look for specific things in pets and that's as valid as being open to getting a random shelter kitty. Certain breeds produce less of the enzymatic allergen, so people with allergies seek out responsible breeders who allow you to test your allergies with the litter ( I did this for a Siberian cat. I'm horribly allergic but love cats. 0 allergies with him and I didn't have to waste anyone/any Kitty's time. I tried calling and going to shelters but couldn't find any and it was taking up months of my life when I just wanted a companion to love). It's much better than taking multiple cats home from a shelter to "test them out" and keep surrendering them because it doesn't work out. I've seen this first hand and it's always so sad and the cats are not happy. Many personality traits are also (mostly) guaranteed with certain breeds, whereas a shelter will have to confirm those traits for you if they have the time to find out or if they have the previous history, which is often not included sadly. It's also worth mentioning that good responsible breeders keep these purebred lineages alive and if everyone were to adopt, many breeders just wouldn't exist. We'd have diminishing numbers of the very few cat breeds that exist. 90% of people getting cats adopt from shelters or find them anyways. It's such a miniscule amount that get purebreds, but unfortunately, a large amount adopt irresponsibly and irrationally. Just a side note.. I worked for many wellness centers and shelters while heavily medicated and suffering daily, and I really do support adopting first, but I would never shame someone for buying a good breed from a good breeder. I however DO NOT support the breeding of poorly bred cats with health problems, smooshed faces, etc for cosmetic purposes, that's a whole other conversation.. So is the whole topic of outdoors cats.
Thanks so much for this video. I have an Abysinnian kitten who loves the outdoors. I'm hoping to get my husband to build a catio for her and this video may be his inspiration.
My cats loved the catio! Although the rain did ruin the wood after one year. If it won’t be covered i would recommend treating the wood with something to protect it
so I know you said you aren't using it anymore...but how did you continue to use the rest of your patio around the catio? did you move the catio back and forth or was it small enough that you could still access the patio through the sliding door?
I had access to my balcony from another sliding glass door in my living room, and i hooked that one up to my bedroom sliding glass door, so i had an advantage there cause i was still able to access my balcony from my living room. Hope this helps ❤️
"if you don't have cats, why are you even watching this viedo?" uh....what? some people may be watching because they don't have a cat yet but want to create these cat things in advance for when the kitty arrives? why else would they watch it?
Hey :) just some feedback since I’ve now had the catio for a few months. My cats love it and it is very safe. You can also bolt it to the wall to avoid tipping.
Hey! Originally i was going to drill it in, but i actually just pushed my outdoor furniture against it, and wedged it between the furniture and my sliding glass door. Lol. Innovative. Not the fool proof but it got the job done !!
How wonderful my cat is so fat that she cannot get through the slats on the porch which is good for me because I’m disabled I know it’s a little bit bad for her but she is so happy out on the porch they all animals need to be able to go outdoors I believe I’m so glad you don’t have for your cats thank you keep loving your cats just love them
Good idea to get the wooden shelves. I think I could actually do this project. And I could let my cat out through a window so she could come and go throughout the day while I’m working in my home office.
Don't pay for animals. You could have gotten them for free at a rescue. Yes, rescues have pure breds and many vet offices get those animals dumped for free when breeders don't want them anymore.
The price is not the only difference between a rescue and a purebred. A well bred cat doesn't come in with behavioral issues, the parents and other ancestors are tested for potential illness, you know what to expect personality wise. There's nothing wrong with getting one. Also, reputable breeders don't dump cats they don't want.
Sorry I’m horrible at replying!!! Wow. Thanks Allison haha. Yes i live in Miami.. we get tons of rain in the summer and humidity. My catio lasted one year. Rip. I’m glad you enjoyed the video :) thanks for the comment !
It actually ended up not lasting up through the weather.. so it was about one year outside. I recommend treating the wood with something to protect it from the outdoor elements!
I actually didn’t.. the catio lasted a full year. I ended up moving and not needing it anymore but i did notice the weather took a toll on it. I would look up some type of wood sealer from a hardware store
I thought i had to drill it to the wall which is what i would have done, but i had some heavy pots i was able to push those up against the side to barricade it between the pots and the wall so it didn’t move .. so i didn’t attach anything. It could stand on its own even with the cats in it but that was for reinforcement
Interesting and gives me some ideas, but "outside" here is not "outside exposed to the elements." I'd like to see how one would adapt this for "outside exposed to the elements." Put tar paper and shingles on top?
Hey! So my catio was under a bit of a covering. I had it for a whole year but the elements did destroy it :/ i live in Miami, we get lots of humidity and rain during the summer months!! Thanks for you comment :)
@Ron Yeah didn't take issue with that myself but was somewhat irritated she said she paid $4k per cat when so many are sitting in shelters waiting for homes
Wassup Conor ! Lmk how it goes. Just a disclaimer.. mine lasted one year. Humidity, rain, all that ish ruined it. But the cats were loving it while it lasted. :) thanks for your comments !
You… don’t need the instructions to build the bookshelves, and the very next part is your saying “we built the bookshelves…” Just because you customize them doesn’t mean you didn’t need to build the bookshelves in the first place….
Love it! I have 6 month old Egyptian Mau kittens. They are sisters. And have so much energy in them! We live in an apartment and I have been wanting to expose them safely to the outdoors. Thanks for sharing 🥰💖🐈🐈
Great job! I can't figure out how it's an outdoor catio. It looks like it's inside your house. Also, and this i a whole other topic, how do you choose plants? I swear my car got poisoned by one of my plants. She almost died. I'm too afraid to have ANY plants now. I love this idea. Thanks again.
sorry for the delayed response but my cats usually stay away from my plants but anytime you buy just do a quick google search with the name asking if its toxic for cats ... most are though :(
This was awesome but your fast and the furious reference is what brought me to the comment section, I’m sorry I’m that guy but Vin Diesel was in that movie for 4 seconds and did not drift a single bit 😂😂😂 but this catio is awesome and I’m going to have to replicate it !!
I love this! I'm trying to make a similar DIY catio for my cats. I live on the 7th floor of a high rise so want an enclsoure like this rather than cat proofing the balcony (don't want to take that risk). Is the catio pressed right against the door? Does it stay there or do you move it to be flush with the door each time you let the cats into it? :)
I am thinking about doing this right off the sliding glass door in the basement. I would want it to be butted right up against the screen and probably have a reinforced square cut into the screen so they can access the catio. As I would also want to access the patio when they are not in the catio, what about putting it on rollers that can lock in place.I know, it's a lot of work, but seems worth it.
I love this idea! Looked everywhere and cannot find shelving that is similar and inexpensive. Ikea is over 100 miles away and there isn't an option with this shelving to have it shipped to my home.
