The grey bucket with the handle is for separating your trash. I have 6 more square ones in a big drawer under my kitchen sink. In Sweden we separate our trash and recycle it. I separate plastic, glass, metal, cardboard, paper and organic waste. Once a week or so we take it to a recycling station (we are only 2 in our household).🇸🇪
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes Год назад
Oh ok! Thank you! Here we have large cans to put the recycling in and they pick it up on trash day. I compost my own kitchen scraps so that stays out of the landfill. I keep my glass jars to reuse for different things some of which are actual mason jars that I can use to can my own produce in. Recycling is a bit of a scam as I understand it. Most of that stuff winds up in landfills or dumped at sea, so it's really better to incorporate the waste into your lifestyle and limit the need to recycle or throw away anything. It's difficult, but a better long term impact. We need to shift from consumption to production, and this is difficult as the means of production is not high tech and it's rather dirty. But so rewarding!
@spacepuppie
@spacepuppie Год назад
@@PattymacMakes Yeah, I remember hearing that recycling in the US can be a bit of a scam. I'm from the US but have lived in Sweden for the past 12 years. And they really do recycle everything here. You can't walk up the street too long before you come to recycling bins. I don't think I've ever seen regular trash cans here. I guess that's a friendly tip for anyone thinking about visiting Sweden ... be prepared to separate your trash. It's really nice though and why Ikea sells those small trash bins =)
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes Год назад
@@spacepuppie It's not difficult to do, for sure! Reducing waste over all is the real key and reusing what you can at home instead of the recycling is also key. I've started making my own condiments like sour cream and salad dressings etc, so that reduces a TON of plastic waste. Plus it's much better for our health. It's all about changing habits, and while it does generate extra work, I think the benefit outweighs the inconvenience. I love my country, but frankly, A LOT of what they feed Americans in terms of food and information and news is garbage and a total scam. It's sad and I hope the country wakes up at some point. Love to connect with others around the world over our mutual love of IKEA!! 😃

In Wales we have kerbside recycling - so we separate our recycling into different containers, place them outside our house and they are collected by the Local Council every week.

Little fun fact about the names at IKEA: each group has a “theme”. Garden furniture has names of Swedish islands, book shelves are named after jobs or beds are named after Norwegian cities. And since the danish and Swedish people like to tease each other, all rugs and door mats have names of danish cities 😅

I have a great hack for the jonaxel. I run a prayer quilt ministry, and we needed multiple sewing stations. We have 4 of them spaced out along a long wall, and we cut and finished plywood, to make table tops, we now have 3 complete sewing stations and each station has its own set of drawers and supplies. It is the perfect table top height for a work station. this could also work for an office desk at home, and I bet they have table tops you can buy and use as well.

Glad you are planning ahead with your ability to get food. Everyone needs to do what you did and plan to have food for an extended period of time. A years worth of food we rotate through in our homes would save so much stress with the increase of prices. I feed my dogs a bunch of veggies and have had the hardest time getting them at Costco (medley mix, cabbage heads). I plan to grow a garden full of cabbage this summer to freeze for them. Having a dehydrator would be even better to do what you did. I’m in Alaska and we do not have IKEA here but I enjoyed watching what you looked at. Take care and keep on planning for a rainy day.
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes Год назад
Thank you Kathy! I agree having an extended pantry to carry you along for a long period of time is critically important. People dismiss it and it's detrimental. The cost of everything is so high now, that if I didn't have put away what I put away, I would have trouble keeping us fed. And I am growing everything I can to minimize buying produce in the store. I haven't found it as easy to get my lettuce going as people like to say, but once it establishes it does really well. I have a Cosori dehydrator and I did my own potato slices last year which are really good. I want to start growing my own mushrooms and I figure I can dry those, too. Ikea is a huge blessing, and I'm so ready to go back again for another visit! You might want to consider a heated green house or some sort of indoor grow set up so you can extend your growing season and have more variety of produce. Alaska is a tough climate to garden in!

I have the same white desk everyone has from Ikea with the drawers on the sides. It makes the best sewing station for me. I even purchased Ikea silverware trays and they fit in the drawers sideways and sit on the lip of the drawers, and you still have storage under the tray.. the tray sitting on the lip of the drawer doesn't prohibit you from closing the drawers. I know that sounds confusing but it's the best space saver!!

Thank you for the heads up on the Hogsma. I have two raskog carts and I was able to order the tops. Our IKEA is 2 hours away and prepandemic I loved going every so often but our store has been so bare the last few times because of the pandemic. Luckily I got the drop leaf table right before the lock down and it is the perfect table in my sewing room. I have so much ikea furniture. 🤣

Oh my gosh, you will LOVE the Hogsma. It's a small thing but it makes such a difference. I need to redo my office trolley when I get to the spring cleaning...probably next month after the worst of the pollen is over. The store here is hit or miss, and what's in now it a LOT more expensive, so I'm glad I'm not in the immediate market for any furniture. It's not going to improve any time soon which is sad. Very sad. I'm so glad I took the chance on my Norden when I had the chance. It's been such a great sewing table.

The gray bucket with a handle is for organizing pantries, trash or recyling and compost. I see people bring them to my farmers market to empty their food scrap into the Compost Angel. The names are Swedish, same the world over. Join their family club and get a free coffee when you visit. Also IKEA recycles batteries and some other items, can also trade in furniture. Where do you get the dehydrated food? I eat a 3 lb bag of spinach a week. Takes up space in my fridge, sounds better than frozen. You can order many things online. I have offices, and furniture from IKEA in a few different homes.
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes Год назад
Thanks for the tip on the gray buckets. Several people have chimed in to say they are used to separate trash and recycling in Sweden. I have curbside pickup for mine every two weeks so I just put it in that can and don't worry about the separation indoors. I buy my freeze dried spinach from Augason Farms on Amazon. I guess I should add an affiliate link for that, because I do get so many questions about it. I use the dehydrated product in my shakes and I grow my own fresh for salads or meals. Depending on where you live, you might want to try growing some of your own! I highly recommend it!

That was a fun shopping spree. It’s always fun to see what is out there and how to use it. I am in a very rural area with the closest town of 5,000 people is about 35 miles away. No shopping there, (WalMart is it) but the city is only 140 miles away and I do go there two or three times a year. But I have no idea if there is an IKEA store. I’ll have to look it up and see. I hate going to the city, the traffic is just awful, but I have a favorite fabric store, and I stock up when I go! You have so many great ideas and tips on organization. I simply must get busy and organize my sewing room, and you are the motivating factor! Thank you.

Thanks for that wonderful feedback Jodi! I lived rural for about 7 years, and some things I loved, but other things I didn't. The driving made me crazy, and it was too much for me. I also take care of my mother and there's no way I can manage her in that situation anymore. We are back in town, and while I do love it, I also kind of wish I was way out in the boondocks right about now. People do seem to enjoy the shopping style videos so I'm going to work on doing more of them. It's a fun break from what's otherwise a LOT of really bad news. And we all need that mental break for it.

My favorite IKEA experiences were going to the Brooklyn store by ferry. Large items are not allowed, but can be shipped from there. Quite a few trips were made after work to pick up a few thins. The Queens store is a large open store, which actually had me confused. To my grand niece, it is the greatest store in the world. As for smaller items, quite a few things can be shipped home (like my set of plates and coffee mugs.) And as for orange, in the words of Sinatra, orange is the happiest color.
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes 2 года назад
Gosh it's so funny, Edwin...I love yellows and golds so I guess orange only follows. And it is happy! Oh gosh, taking the ferry to Brooklyn? That sounds like a wonderful afternoon outing! Thank you for confirming that they do indeed ship items. I thought so, but since I can go there easily by car, and at this stage it's pretty much one of my only outings that's not grocery shopping, I just drive over and enjoy the field trip. I really don't need much of anything else but I still enjoy going over.

In all the years that I have been sewing, I have never thought to use a small bin to collect my scraps.
