This is a great idea for someone that is in the early stages of planning/building a model railroad layout, but wants to experiment with scenery or jump ahead to some of the finer detail work. You can build a small shelf diorama for displaying a favorite locomotive . Rolling stock. And then you get to work on building scenes before the big railroad is ready for it. Or you also get a sense of “finishing something” by building a little scene, knowing that the larger project will take lots of time. I considered building a little T-Trak module or something just to work on scenery, but this is a cool idea too.
Been out of the hobby for over a decade, but this is stirring some creative juices. Some great techniques and an amazing end result! I am inspired! Thank you!
You have such an artists eye for the details that make your diorama look so realistic. You inspire me to be more adventurous with adding scenery to my layout.
Wow! I've never seen anyone ever build such a beutiful display! I just started model railroading. a year ago to be exact, And this helps me get more knowledge to build a nice layout!
Two years ago I was handed the wonderful gift of my first grandson 🥰and, having wonderful, happy memories of my own childhood railway, I feel that with a little persuasion the pair of us might be heading down that magical "track" together soon. But, even if I don't get anywhere near the quality of your endeavour, I can safely say the enjoyment of watching just this one video of yours has been an absolute joy. What a talent, and what mastery in the art of teaching you possess. It is truly outstanding. Added to that, your detailed references and links totally cover every aspect to accompany the outstanding recording of the build. Now excuse me while I return to your library of videos that I know will meet all my expectations of seeing a master craftsman at work. BTW I have no regrets if the above review sounds too cheesy. Take a bow 👏👏👏
Thank you so much John for the incredibly kind comments. I’m sure you and your grandson will spend many enjoyable hours sharing this wonderful hobby. Thanks for watching and best wishes. Andy 😁
Mate do it!!! I was so fortunate to become a father a few years back and I've now built two small layouts (one that goes around our Christmas tree, and one based on some books my daughter loves to read) and she LOVES watching the trains going round and now is starting to help me with the hobby :) she's 4.5 years old and I did the layout for her second birthday so don't worry it's never too early :) Best of luck, and thanks for the comment that echoes my feelings about hobbying with my daughter :)
@@johnbarrett9144You are very welcome :) if you remember, pop a comment on my video when you're done? It would be EPIC to get to see your creation mate :) best wishes
I can see that you are also a motorcycle fan from your copies of MCN so I guess you are a natural when it comes to often intricate manual skills. It’s a gift that a few of us are born with and some are well taught by our fathers. It’s gift that keeps on giving, - right through retirement as well! Bless you my friend!
First time visitor to your channel. Well done. The videography was great. I especially liked the steady camera and fast-forwarding after the initial task was demonstrated.
Extreamly nice 👍… well thought out , honestly… a REAL model RR that has endless unpredictable aspects , and many many more as you sweep from right to left… Just a relaxing slow mid summer day … Great Job 👏
Absolutely brilliant. All your time and effort certainly paid off with an amazing result. Genius to do the photograph's outside too. They look brilliant.
If I could make one suggestion: instead of using relatively expensive Vallejo paint for the ground, you could use a big bottle of some craft paint, like Apple Barrel or Craft Smart. Vallejo makes excellent paints for scale model and miniature painting, but there are far cheaper alternatives for rough work or big patches of scenery.
That was so fantastic that I felt as if I was back in time, standing in that field watching the beautiful scenery unfold. Wonderful work and a great effort with the fine detail.
I searched the other day for something like this for some 1/35 tank models I made and came up with nothing. Just looking through my recommended videos and I’m happy to see someone else has thought of and done this. Didn’t think to search the model train side of dioramas. Nice job and a well made video to boot. Subbed
Great video and result. Mesmerising. I’m so impressed with your attention to detail and imagination. The photos are very realistic too. I’m sure your skills could be used professionally.👌🫡
This is just superb, so much effort and attention to detail. I’m thinking of getting back into model railways and this is inspiring. Thanks, from a new subscriber 🙂.
@@DartsideScenics cheers, I noticed you’re based near Totnes. I stayed down in Kingswear last June and visited Totnes. Nice part of the country, and I recently bought a print called ‘Dartmouth Castle’ by Rob Rowland. Worth a google, I like his style and some are pretty atmospheric and good to refer to.
Beautifully done and so realistic looking. The photos look like scenic pictures. Amazing! Such critical attention to detail, you are quite the artist! Thank you for this video. I have learned a lot. ♥️
Wow. This popped up as a suggested video on my feed and I watched it in fascination. Brilliant. Your attention to detail and patience makes for some stunning results. Photographing it against real scenery at the end, you’d think it was real 👍🏼😁 Liked & subscribed 👍🏼
@@DartsideScenics your other diorama call “end of the line” I found very haunting and made me quite sad, I’m 70 years of age and as a teenager worked for BR at Watford Junction Carriage and Wagon sheds where we changed wheels and fixed Hot boxes on mainly goods trucks, I also got the chance ( unofficially) to drive a DMU from Watford to Rugby Works for a repair job, I also spent time with the shunter moving stock around the station sidings “ including the Royal Train” which we pushed into the shed to have its brakes replaced. I miss those days terribly… the sounds and smells will never leave me. Thank you for recreating the past in such detail…. Andrew
@@DartsideScenics I’m afraid that would be impossible as I’ve lived on a 42’ Narrowboat for over 20 years and I can barely move with the accumulated junk I have onboard ( not real junk just men’s stuff, tools, paint, wiring, plumbing, spare parts etc etc, if I ever won the lottery I’ve promised myself to find-convert an old Railway Carriage into a little home and pay a Preservation Line rent to have it put on a siding so I can hear, see and smell times gone by… no harm dreaming eh.. 👍🏻
Congratulations on your scene and particularly on your informative and calm commentary. Enjoyed watching the whole thing. If anyone can explain the use of 'watered-down washing up liquid' I'd be grateful, since I would have thought this would act as a resist to both glue and paint.
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The watered down washing up liquid helps the glue to soak in rather than bead on top of the powder-like surface. It's worth doing a test so you can see the difference and how much soapy spray you need. I often get it wrong by not using enough and then it starts to bead!
Completely realistic. Because of watching your videos I finally successfully built my own diorama with a bit of water. So I’m very grateful to you for showing us how you do it.
This is such a cool way to do a diorama in a small set up. Space saver for sure. Well done on your project. I might follow your idea with my Queensland Rail scene idea. Thanks again
Well I came across this video by the usual RU-vid recommendation etc. At first I just opened it and had a quick cursory glance thinking, why would anyone want to make such a shelf diorama…. But from what I saw at first made me more curious and I watched the whole thing through. So pleased I did.. Wow! Such detail and what amazing modelling skills. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this, it looks so realistic. Superb modelling, brilliant narration as well.👍
Probably the best use of a floating shelf! A great diorama and this has inspired me to do something similar - in between working on my actual layout. Cheers
An absolute masterclass Andy on so many different techniques, you never fail to astound me with your skill! One technique I have not used is DAS clay for grouting, I shall certainly be trying that one out. A video I shall return to many times as I continue to build my own layout, thanks mate. Cheers Steve
Thank you for sharing this video of your diorama. The results are stunningly impressive. I'm learning so much from your videos and you have inspired me to have a go at a diorama myself.
I'm in awe of your patience - how many hours of work went into the model I can't imagine. ANd the number of different components (and glues and tuff) amazed me too :) :) :)
Delightful video, no jiggly camera movement, in focus, smooth audio. great tip using the Das Clay for the pointing. Thanks for taking the time to produce this.
A superb diorama and so reminiscent of the Dart Valley Railway. The photography outside Totnes was the icing on the cake! I loved watching how you resolved different areas of the model. So beautifully made, I will be watching more of your videos.
You’re very kind Sam but I’m an incredibly long way off!! You have achieved the very best results and inspired me and others along the way. It was great to see some video of your awesome layout today👍🏻
Here i am, scrolling trough youtube at midnight with nothing to watch. and then i come across this masterpiece. Didn't even knew i liked this type of video's lol. Very nice! +1 SUB.
So much better than my models on a plain shelf. Thanks so much for your presentation and the info covering all the facets of skilled modeling. Best regards, John.
Wow! So glad you posted a tutorial. It is a beautiful diorama. Love the pastoral scene with sheep with dry stacked stone walls. WWS Stone Wall Model - brilliant. You are SO talented. I can't believe how realistic it is, especially with the close up taken outside! I'm in New England, and am considering a rather large Lower Connecticut River Valley Diorama that would also have these walls. I find it very fascinating and relaxing to watch the pros do it on RU-vid. I wish I could just pay someone like you to do it, (sigh) Afraid my work will end up in the 'bin'.
Thank you so much Debbie! That sounds like a great model to work on. I’m sure it will turn out great - I think all modellers are self critical but keep going with it.
This has been the most inspirational and ASMR modelling video I’ve watched! I am so gonna attempt at my own floating shelf diorama. Many thanks for inspiring me and I’ll be sure to show you my end results once completed 👍🏻
This is a great tutorial! It gave me ideas on a future layout I would love to build (provided the wife lets me!) and to compromise on space this looks like the way to go!
Or, if you do one, it could be used as a future display for a specialty retail place or at a convention that people would love to check out, down the road.
