This game is clearly very big on the "any landing you can walk away from" standard of successful landings.

Just a heads-up, the reason you kept getting flags instead of plane types on the HQ screen is that you were mousing over the insignia portion of the unit and not the aircraft-type portion. I would recommend the Yak-1 as it seems to be more maneuverable and maybe faster. I think if you can get onto their tails faster and be able to stick with them, you'll get some more kills. I think the LA-5 just isn't properly balanced for your flying style.

Taff your Flight Videos are always very exciting and enjoyable, I Have been watching you now for over a year and have notice a tendency you have, When pulling your Trigger you seam to also move your stick (causing a jerk) I recommend, Squeezing your stick and trigger this will steady your Stick / Plane during your shot, Old Sharpshooter trick I learned when I shot competitively. Want to say stay with LA-5 for the struggle session, but the Yak is Easy mode, Your Choice LOL

Your LA-5 is considered superior to the early Yak 1, I’d suggest not moving to a Yak 1 Sqn until the 1b variant arrives or even better Yak 3. The version of LA-5 you have gets improved to the LA-5F and FN variants. With the FN you can hold your own vs 109G up to 5000 metres.

Taff I would recommend, that you try the Yak 1. I fly it myself and really enjoy it. It´s easy to manage and a turn fighter, I think that is more your style. The only thing that you have to lern with it is, that you only shoot short bursts, because it hasn´t a lot of cannon ammo. Besides that I would also recommend, that you stay with your flight. I know the AI often does some stupid things but it is much more enjoyable during a fight, if you have some wingmen. Without them you have to outperform at least two enemy fighters which can be pretty exhausting sometimes.

9:53 - If you're going to play chicken, make sure you do so while sideslipping. Kick your rudder over to one side then stay level by applying opposite roll (ailerons). That allows you to slide out of your enemy's path, so he can't target you, while still allowing you to keep your guns on him. 21:28 - Leonid (LEE-oh-nid, as in Leonid Brezhnev, the former leader of the Soviet Union, from 1964 to 1982)

Hahaha, That Yak pilot dodging your careening La 5 is probably saying "I say old chap, you mind not oiling up my airstrip?" I think it was a Yak-1....keep his squadron in mind for a possible transfer. I think you might enjoy flying the Yak-1. It has a 20mm firing through the propeller hub plus 2 12.7 mm MGs on top of the cowling with a fair amount of ammo. I really enjoy flying the Yak-1 in War Thunder. It's pretty good in a low altitude turning fight that you seem to like.

By flying with your outer cooling flaps open, you are sacrificing about 50 kph. Also, if you haven't tried it, use boost in combat.
@colindouglas7769
@colindouglas7769 3 года назад
There are so many things he is doing wrong in that aircraft, but yes, I have been screaming at the screen for him to close his cooling flaps since the first sortie on the La-5.
@theamazingmystico1243
@theamazingmystico1243 3 года назад
@@colindouglas7769 I think he is using the basic, non-expert mode. The AI will deploy the cooling flaps when it shouldn't. To get the most out of the aircraft, it has to be flown in expert mode with full engine management. Engine management isn't that hard -- keep the oil radiator full open, close the outer cooling flaps, open the inlet cooling flaps, then max rpm and mixture for combat, with additional use of boost. The La-5 is quite capable in the right hands.

It looks like the Yak-1 is a turn-fighter, lighter and more maneuverable, but more flimsy (lots of wood, in its construction). You might have more success with it, but don't get hit. :)

Your decision to remain in the LA-5 has me starting on Tafin's eulogy. Obviously he got noticed by Stalin as a possible threat to The Great Leader's popularity, hence his refusal of a transfer to a more survivable aircraft. Pity you must die in this way for Mother Russia. We all have to make sacrifices, eh comrade? May you live long enough to raise another glass of vodka to our cause. Na Zdorovie! [Cheers!]

I would re-review the selection of aircraft available per each squadron again. And then choose between the Yak or the MIG (if it is available). On a side note... I always loved your review of the pre-flight modifications that could be added or removed from the current aircraft you were flying. It was awesome seeing what mods were available per aircraft, and what mods you decided to select. Please re-add that part to your vids if possible!!! Love your work as always. You and Wolfpack are one of my all-time favs on RU-vid.

Congratulations on your promotion Comrade Tafinski, but did you realise that you forgot to deploy flaps on that mess of a landing? Get a bloody Yak. You will have more chance in a Yak. "The Yak-1 entered Soviet service in 1941, one of three modern types of aircraft accepted for production just prior to the German invasion of the USSR. Despite initial shortcomings, it soon proved to be the thoroughbred of the Soviet Airforce. Indeed, it remained in production until the end of the war, modernized but fundamentally recognizable." The Yak 1 is similar yet slightly superior to the Hurricane you were flying and you were pretty good in that. Go find a Yak squadron!
@timonsolus
@timonsolus 3 года назад
Ideally, Taff, you want to fly the latest Yak-1b, rather than the Yak-1. The Yak-1b has better armament, a better engine, better visibility, and is optimised for low level dogfighting. It entered production in August 1942, so it may not be available yet on the front lines.
@colindouglas7769
@colindouglas7769 3 года назад
But if he starts on a Yak-1 to begin with and manages to survive long enough on it, the squadron will more than likely be able to get an upgrade to the 1b when it becomes available.

But then he gets sucked into a turn fight with those 109s which, as we all know now, ain't going to work out well in the La-5 Series 8, especially when the second 109 gets on his 6 o-clock while he's busy chasing the tail of the lead 109 in vain.

@rexwilliamson6452
@rexwilliamson6452 3 года назад
Taff, you state that the La-5 is "not competitive." Per the Luftwaffe's own assessment of a captured La-5, compared with their primary contemporary Eastern Theater fighter (the Bf-109 F), the La-5 was nearly an equal to the 109 though the 109's engine (throttle, cooling, etc.) was automated and the La-5 engine control is all manual (6 different levers). Historically, it certainly performed well. The La-5 performs at its best when it is kept below 3k meters. The La-5 has better roll rate but worse sustained turn rate and worse climb rate than the 109. Yet you insist on having sustained turning, climbing engagements against Bf-109s. Use yo-yos, chandelles, stay above your enemy (not on the same plane) and split-S to disengage if you have to. Boom and zoom in the La-5 - it is not a turn fighter. I agree with Justin Nolan's comment below: if "yank and crank" is your style, fly the Yak-1b, Yak-7b, or Yak-9, not the La-5.

@colindouglas7769
@colindouglas7769 3 года назад
Taff, the La-5 Series 8 is clearly not the aircraft for you since you are obsessional about turn-fighting, whereas the aircraft you are flying in is a boom-n-zoomer. However, if you're looking to get into dogfighting in the Yak-1, you are seriously going to have to improve your situational awareness because the 109 or the 190 you DON'T see coming is going to kick your backside before you know which way is up! The old Battle Of Britain maxim of "don't fly straight and level for more than 30 seconds in the combat area" holds true, so keep your head continually on the swivel. Our old pal Der Sheriff has recorded tutorial videos on his Sim-Shack on how to fly in the Yak-1, so check it out beforehand because you will find it helpful.

The La-5 was competitive speed-wise with the 109 in combat if flown in the correct way by maintaining an energy advantage and employing boom and zoom tactics. Closing the cooling flaps on the cowling when attacking adds and extra 50km/h to the max speed and engaging the combat boost appropriately helps greatly. The La-5 just was not a turn fighter.
