In this exciting new IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover - Blitz Desert War expansion, you can fly with over 40 aircraft and variants from the Royal Air Force, the Luftwaffe or the Regia Aeronautica. See combat in the legendary Spitfire, sturdy Hurricanes, stubby Martlets, and rugged Kittyhawks, or take wing in deadly Messerschmitts and Macchis. The game introduces a flyable Wellington bomber, as well as updated versions of the Ju-88 and Heinkel 111H. Desert Wings allows bomber and fighter jocks of all skill levels the opportunity to fully challenge themselves in this historically based campaign.
In addition to the long list of flyable aircraft, there are over 25 new tanks, artillery and vehicles as well as 17 new ships, including massive battleships, cruisers, destroyers, patrol boats, submarines, torpedo boats and merchant ships; these additions allowing huge land and naval battles in ferocious detail.
IL-2 Sturmovik: Desert Wings- TOBRUK will feature a 385km x 385km North African map recreating in precise detail the strategic stronghold of Tobruk and the rugged contours of coast, desert and sea which surrounds it, with over 75 airfields, multiple landmarks and towns, an extensive road system as well as the historical fortifications, minefields and defenses, all based on actual maps from the war. Combined with the excellent multiplayer environment that allows over 100 players and dozens of AI aircraft online simultaneously, IL-2 Sturmovik: Desert Wings - TOBRUK promises intense and challenging human versus human aerial battles.

My relative Harry Gaynor flew Hurricane & Spitfires in the desert war . He shot down 5 1/2 aircraft over about a three year period of active involvement. He was shot down once in the desert while flying a Hurricane, by German Ace Rudi Sinner ( visit his website) , but Harry managed to crash land to fight another day . Harry was subsequently killed on a strafing mission in Italy in late 1944 , and is buried at the Anzio Beachead Cemetary . He was flying a Spitfire mark Five on his final mission .

Yes except that the 109F doesn't have canvas ailerons. It's all aluminium.

Hi. Mk Va, Mk Vb, Mk Vb HF will be flyable. Vb and Vb HF will have normal, late and tropical subversions too.

You never really want to follow a target (2nd Me-109) like that as if you become to fixated it gives a chance of his flight buddies to slip in behind you. Now if he was trying to turn and level off to go home then by all means keep plasturing him.

This was a show mission not really combat one. I suppose him not follow enemy to shot a movie during combat or without knowing his shoulders are covered.

Love Spits but the early models were so under-armed. The V's are awesome and the 20's are the sole reason. I remember a Hurricane variant with 20's as well and one that carried cannon pods (30's?). Both were tank busters. Wonder if they will make an appearance? Can't wait for the release and to watch more of your campaign adventures.

The C (Universal Wing) could fit all configurations. In the Med / N. Africa theater 4 Hispano were considered unreliable and extra weight caused performance issues so outer Hispanos removed. Thus Vc is typically 2 Hispano and 4 x.303.

What kind of head tracking do you use for this? And do you know if this using the head tracking controls from the original IL2 blitz, or if it's the head tracking controls from great battles/sturmovik? Great video!

pretty sure he's using Trackir, plus there's a gradual view zoom in/out in Blitz that's assignable to keys or controller buttons

Mine is going on 6 years old now and still runs it fine. The engine and base game are from 2011 if I recall correctly so you don't need crazy hardware to play.

AI is better than the base game but not great. They act a lot like the AI in Battle of Stalingrad series. MP is where this game will shine. Learn an aircraft, find a wingman and you'll have a great time.

I play mostly single player. The AI looks like it just flies in circles, every time. Not even a basic rolling scissors. Does the AI actually do anything else?

Bf-109F4. Pilots loved it! F frame served as a basis for every version til the end of war. Edit: and others (Avia S-199 & Hispano Aviación HA-1109 & 1112)

A fine video. One thing I would suggest is to make sure people know the copy (even if just a demo copy) is provided by the developer/publisher/whatever. I would suggest it being at the start if the video and in the video info, to make sure people know.

Given this sims heritage I'd have a few questions for the developers - which I'd want straight answers to - before I paid them £60 1) Is the AI fixed ? because in Cliffs its hopeless, to the point of making single player almost useless 2) Have you fixed the control assignment bugs - like it wiping all your settings randomly - and made it easier to assign controls ? 3) Done anything about the TrackIR glitches ? 4) Can you now change ammo loadouts in single player ? I'd want the answers all to be 'yes' and not 'coming in a future update' because that excuse doesn't wash any longer. DCS taught me that a long time ago.

@@Cybermat47 The better AI seems promising. All my questions are aimed at the devs and are rhetorical - I can't be bothered to try to interact with them. They just ignore people with constructive criticisms, that I know. The biggest elephant in the room for multiplayer is numbers. Currently Cliffs has a playerbase of about 30 people....and that's actually up on what it was a year ago...

There are so many "IL-2" game series out there, I'm confused what goes with which and why they aren't all in one

Basically there are 2 WWII flight series - 'Cliffs of Dover + Tobruk' , and several modules under the heading 'Great Battles'. Both series use different game engines from different developer studios, but under the same 'IL2' title from 1C Entertainment. Cliffs came first in 2011 but was abandoned as the company concentrated on the GB series. Cliffs stayed alive because of the volunteer modding group 'Team Fusion' and is now getting this official update plus the brand new content in Tobruk. Some players prefer one series or the other, some like aspects of both. A few like to fight about it, as if it really matters. Great flight simulator games for great fun.

There's the original IL2 Game and what followed it, namely forgotten battles and pacific fighters. That was all later put together and released as the package il:2 1946. A couple years later 1C released the original Cliffs of Dover which was a messy release to say the least. They would later give it to TF to take over development which lead to CLoD Blitz and now Desert Wings. 1C after giving up on Dover went on to make Battle of Stalingrad which later came to have more expansions and became the BOx series. I hope this helps and doesn't make everything even more confusing.

Basically when Cliffs of Dover first came out it was unfinished and very buggy. The developers 1C abandoned the game even though it had huge potential. The modding group Team Fusion took over development of Cliffs of Dover and made it into an awesome game that we have today called Cliffs of Dover Blitz which was released couple years ago officially on Steam. Tobruk is the add-on to Cliffs of Dover Blitz and is also developed by Team Fusion. They have basically built an awesome game out of what was once buggy and unplayable game. There is another IL2 game developed by 1C that is called IL2 Battle of Stalingrad which is the old Developer making a new game and sticking by it and not abandoning it like they did with Cliffs of Dover. Make no mistake Cliffs of Dover Blitz is amazing now as its been developing constantly for around 7-8 years i think and now there is Tobruk.

Yes. There are more, now, I'd say. Air filter controls, radiator cut-offs in the 109. Both are new, in addition to the ones from previous variants.

yes there are some who use a mouse but its easy to assign views or snap views to a joystick hat switch. Head tracking is much more natural though once used to it

Curious George question: was this a single player mission, or a "quick mission" of sorts? I'm looking to "buy in" to this series, but have held off because I don't have time to block out for online participation against live opponents. (BTW, I only recently found your channel, and I'm enjoying your videos very much.)

Yeah that’s just a quick mission. For this game you’ll need to by Cliffs of Dover: Blitz first though, but Blitz has two excellent single player campaigns and a lot of quick missions. I believe Tobruk will have seven campaigns, so that should keep you busy!

Flight model is great. Doesn't yet have the atmospheric and weather effects that make BoX series stand out, but these are in the works, I believe.

also i saw that was raise your head in the cockpit which is great cos if you can't raise your head you can't see over the nose to shoot this is common mistake by most sim players not alot peeps know that the German aircraft gun sights are huge but too see all of it you have to lean in \ zoom in and raise your head you will find alot more markings \ chevrons on the gun sight if you raise your head..so too all you flyers out there bind a key to raise your head...no longer will you have to shoot with a plane cockpit in ur face 24\7

that was epic over the years i've watched you turn from a shaky novice into someone with who now has the skills to be an epic pilot you pulled of an epic shot on that 1st BF 109 at 1 min 24 secs that was real aimed sure shot you hit his wing spar\wing bone , just make sure that when you pull the trigger that you stabilise you gun sight the our British spitfire has 2x20 mm cannons but only 120 rounds so 60 per gun the 4x 303 cal MGs are only 30 calibre and not nearly as good as USA 30 cal either much, lower muzzle velocity compared to 30 cal USA Browning MG, so when you run out 20 mm you will really have to Drill that Jerry with 2 secs long bursts cos 303 cal really not great they work best against a turning aircraft more surface area to hit and less angle to ricochet..also the spitfire side slips pretty well can use to rudder in a fast dive to control speed gains...no criticisms here just knowledge dump :-)

I'm inclined to say yes. However, the real variables required for the FM to stand out, in my opinion involve the weather and atmosphere. At present they are not fully modeled yet. Apparently, dynamic weather updates are in the works but don't quote me on it. Maybe ask Team Fusion. Still worth the purchase though if you want a great MP experience.

I've often had my Spitfire, Hurricane, Blenheim and Beaufighter wings clipped and rudder removed completely by the Luftwaffe. I guarantee all Red pilots are ready to enjoy the fruits of a couple of 20mm cannon after 9 years of only .303 mg's. Now we just have to aim them properly instead of painting the sky.

@@sergiylabunetc3473 Not everything is equal between planes. Spitfire Vc has 2 cannon and 4 x .303mg. The Hispano cannon has a much faster firing rate and muzzle velocity to the MGFF. What shells are used and where they hit will make a huge difference. It might break a spar or pass straight through leaving just a hole. I'm sure plenty of research and testing has been done to trust Team Fusion making this as accurate as possible.

Tobruk is a full new map built from scratch + lots of new planes, some completely new like the Kittyhawk, Tomahawk, Dewoitine, Martlet, Macchi 202, etc...

SquirrelBoy A plane getting shot down is interesting no matter what, but from that footage it seems like it’s always a fuel tank or ammo explosion that takes the wing off. Not a structural failure that we saw here.

Nice effects but in all simugame... the IA ennemys are absolutly ridiculous when they fight! If one human flew in the 109 F4, the combat 'll be different.

Navigation must of been tough almost NO features on the ground just dead reckoning and a compass. Easy to get lost. Just a flat as the sea. The whole place reminds me of Iraq it looks like a nuclear holocaust nothing grows.

Whats the situation with AI wingmen in this sim? Will they listening to your orders, or they live in they're own world, just like in Battle of Britain original game of 2011? Probably, "Desert wings" would be the best sim in the world, but... No interaction with AI in offline campaign - no game at all!

I´m so disillusioned.. Germans always lose in most vids. Loading screens in IL2: Always the germans are burning/exploding/shot down in those pics. Even when watching WW2 dokumentations for the "x"-est time, and always cheering for/wondering if the germans maybe will win this time, they will lose in the end. Is this realistic? HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT!!! Please fix this.. 🤐
