Act I finale from Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia." Joyce DiDonato, Juan Diego Flórez, Peter Mattei, John Del Carlo, John Relyea, Claudia Waite. Conductor: Maurizio Benini. Production: Bartlett Sher (2006). 2006-07 season.
While you were there I was watching it broadcast live in HD at our local Cinemark movie theater on a Saturday afternoon in March 2007. Brought my brother & girlfriend kicking and screaming at first but in the end, they were absolutely delighted with it.
@@JoshFreilich Sorry, you are wrong! Rossini wasn´t a clown. He was a very sensitive Person and suffered often from depression. If you would study the biographies from Weinstock an Stendhal you would change your opinion. I´m sure!
@@nicola3263 go to the official Met Opera website and then to their on demand service, it has tons of gorgeous productions like this one, they are also streaming many things completely for free at the moment
@@JoshFreilich e allora distingua il suo gusto da quello che lei reputa che si "debba fare". 'Sto finale non va bene. Lo dice la partitura, fine. Poi lei può pensare quel che vuole. Buona opera!
This version of Il Barbiere is so perfect, my three favourite singers on the same stage and I also really liekd the staging/ production. The version from Covent Garden with Florez and DiDonato is also a favourite of mine, I would not be able to choose between the two, but luckily I don't have to :-). Such amazing singing! JDF is the definite Almaviva for me.
@@NYCOPERAFAN you're right, I will never understand why there are no other DVDs/ recordings of Peter Mattei as Figaro, he is the best 😢 these days he often does difficult stuff like Woyzek and Kindertotenlieder and such, which are just not my thing, but he is my favourite baritone and I heard him live twice in the last year, once singing the Winterreise and once as the Count in Le Nozze, which was wonderful - but judging by your alias you are in luck, because you might have the chance to hear him in the upcoming Met productions?
@@misssophie6515 Yes I always make a point of seeing him at least once in virtually every Met production he takes part in (though I have already seen him sing Don Giovanni 3-4 previous times and that's the new production he's in this upcoming season). He's my favorite of all the opera singers performing today.
@@NYCOPERAFAN Lucky you, I would like to see him as DG over here so much, but didn't get the chance yet. People in NYC are twice lucky this season, with PM also singing Don Carlos at the Met at the end of the year! I hope the new DG production will be nice, with the new productions you never know, but I am really hoping for a marvellous recording to enjoy from afar at least! Have fun!
This is a good one, but I still believe the gold standard is the Met's performance from 1958 on RCA with Robert Merrill as Figaro and Roberta Peters as Rosina. That recording is well worth seeking out.
Some negative comments on this fabulous performance reminds me Don Bartolo reaction on Rosina’s Contro un cor aria))) I wish I could be there, that was so much of energy in every note!
There are no better and best, at that level they are all very good. I'm also in love with the production of the Paris National Opera with Sacca, DiDonato and Shausson from 2002 and the one with Florez, DiDonato (in wheelchair), Spanioli, Corbelli and Furlanetto of the ROH from 2009. Madrid 2005 with Florez, Baya, Spanioli and Raimondi is also very good. Don't you think however that if Florez is involved, he always steels the show? I thing Mardid 2005 is the same case, I think Spanioli looks quite disappointed during the curtain bows although he is very good too.
I agree! The same problem with the music of Mozart. The music will suffer! Please hear Varviso (Ausensi, Berganza, Dara, Benelli) or Abbado )Prey, Barganza, Alva, Montarsolo, Dara). Much better!
Agreed. I like the tempo with Callas and more importantly the recording isn't muffled. Love this performance for the acting but it is near impossible to hear the articulation (which you can in the version you linked)
And there's this recording of the entire opera. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rvAFpbbmaww.html&ab_channel=MetropolitanOpera My parents had the vinyl and it's what I judge all others by.
I've been in training since I was 14 years old-with formal classical training beginning at 17 yrs old, I have sung roles from operas of the such and I am a Lyric Baritone specializing in bel canto rep and coloratura rep as well... La Fille du Regiment, Don Pasquale, Hamlet, etc., Arias and scenes from these opera among others I have performed in concert staged and semi-operas... shall I go on?
