Ilanit singing Balalaika, from 1984. Was originally supposed to be the Israeli Eurovision entry that year but due to the Contest being held on a memorial day Israel didn't take part. As great a song as it is I don't think it would have won, even if Ilanit had worn golden boots... Enjoy!

She is so beautiful. I read that this song was written for the Jews of Soviet Union that were stuck there in Russia behind the Iron curtain, that's why it's called Balalaika.

To sffilk: Yes, Ilanit is still very much alive and still sings in Israel and elsewhere. She has collaborated with other Israeli singers as recently as 2006, the same year she gave performances in Canada.

Israel did not participate in 1984 because the concert coincided with Israel Memorial Day that they honour dearly. And by the way, the song lyrics have NO POLITICAL topic whatsoever. NOE!!! Without the imegration of the "arabian-jews" in the 50's and the 60's israel wouldnt have enough man power to defend itself in the wars that threatend the state's existence. If your name is Ilya youre probably only 1st generation here so have some respect! btw, look at your hair. are you blond? If so then I'd check my origin if I were you before I open my mouth.
