Illumination CEO Chris Meledrandri has revealed his thoughts on artificial intelligence. While AI is used during the production of their movies, it shouldn't be the driving force of creativity; that's what the artists are for. How much AI will be used in upcoming animated movies from Illumination?

I think Illumination was also against NFTs. So that really shows Illumination is pretty wise even if their movies themselves are mostly just average. BTW, Migration is coming out tomorrow, so I look forward to seeing how that does.

@@Mattcai2004Actually, Sony never really had much criticism. Other than The Emoji Movie, the direct-to-video films, and those Smurfs movies (tho I liked Lost Village). Most of their movies were either amazinhg, underrated or meh at best.

With a big animation studio like Illumination Studios, it’s great to know that they’re against the use of AI. Animation is a long process. You shouldn’t be able to cut corners within animation and insert AI into your projects. We see these projects for the great animation. Not AI. AI should never replace animation.

AI could be good for stuff like placeholder art or voice actors and helping with detecting grammatical errors in scripts. It should be used to help and assist in creating art, not be an integral part of the art itself. If, say, Marvel’s Secret Invasion had used AI to create a placeholder opening credits in development and then had actual artists swoop in and make one themselves, then it would’ve likely gone down much better as an example of a good use of AI.

I just got out of the theater, and I *really* enjoyed it. Very wholesome, cute, and legit funny at times. Probably my second favorite Illumination film behind Sing 2. (There’s even a Despicable Me short before the film). I legit hope it succeeds at the box office, even though it has to compete with Aquaman 2. Though Migration looks like it got better reviews .

Don’t forget Sing 2 from 2 years ago which was fantastic, and IMO their most heartfelt and best film And now after seeing Migration, it’s now my 2nd favorite Illumination film. Very heartfelt, wholesome and legit had laugh out loud moments. I hope it does well at the box office especially against Aquaman 2.

IMO Sing 2 really made me respect them a *lot* more. That film was far more emotional, touching, and heartfelt than it had any right to be. The original Sing was alright but the second one far surpassed it *Update* I saw Migration and I really enjoyed it! It was a lot better than I expected. Very wholesome, funny and legit entertaining. It was also nice seeing an original film and I hope it succeeds

Say what you will about them, while their catalog is a mixed bag. I’m really happy that they are handling the problem seriously. Illumination is one of the big name animation studios that actually care for their workers and proper treatment. It’s ok to use Ai as a tool for Crowd animation and certainly rendering effects, but using Ai to replace animators and artists is not acceptable! I’m glad Meledandri handled the situation pretty well. I hope they can try making some quality films in the future, and maybe have a chance to take risks. Have I forgot to mention that they hate crypto too?

I hope Animators never lose their jobs to AI! I know AI isn't necessarily a bad thing but at the same time, we need stories from real life people too in anime and Western animation! My sister and I didn't bother to watch WISH because of how bad the songs sounded and the animation quality alone... Which in of itself is a travesty! Honestly. I have mad respect for illumination now. I thought they were much more greedier and soulless at some points but now I'm happy that they care for human artists a lot and they seem to be much more quality heavy than some other studios. ( Especially this one 🐭🏰💰)

I'd never thought that out of all the animation companies that would be against Ai, it would be Illumination but I gotta respect them for that. Regardless of how you feel about them and their movies, the fact that they understand that Ai shouldn't be used as a replacement for human talent is something you gotta admire about them

I think AI will have at most as much as an impact as digital animation. Yes, many people lost their jobs because of it, and maybe something was lost in the process, but in the end, it made it more convinient for artists to make their art, specially independent ones.

I don't agree with AI taking over the roles of actors but aside from that everything else is fine. The technophobic people in the comments saying AI is bad because it takes away jobs are completely missing the point.

Yeah. Vailskibum even said here that AI should be used as a tool to help people, not replace their jobs. There are some cons I have with AI however. Sure AI has the ability to try and help people, but I feel that people could use it for bad things. Some people could try to even use it to spread misinformation and make fake voice recordings of real people doing things they didn’t even do.

Given that the box office success of the 2D The Boy and the Heron did in theaters is also a saving grace. Illumination can make animated films without AI and still use human artists and workers to make great films. I still retcon Happy the Happy Meal mascot and Hop from my mind.

Agreed It’s just like self checkouts. They’re fine in small doses but you can’t beat human to human interaction. Not to mention the annoying quips that come with the self checkout (“place item in bagging area, unexpected item in bagging area etc LOL)

I would argue the biggest problem with AI is how a lot of them were trained using peoples copyright properties material art work data without permission and conpensation i think this is something we can't compromise on. But Companies could go with other routes to make AI tho like use copyright free materials and bought artists assets with permission and compensation to create their programs it would still be cheaper but not explore people work copyright and small IPs

Honestly this is looking like Illumination’s peak years. They’ve been on a pretty good streak with minions the rise of gru and the Mario movie but now them, the studio you’d never expect to say it, disagrees with AI.

Don’t forget Sing 2 which was very surprising at how great it was. IMO it’s their best one along with Mario being a close second. I’m seeing Migration today so I’ll have to see how that ends up *Update* I just got out of the theater and I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Exceeded my expectations, highly recommend
