Learned this from someone. Might be helpful too. Basically, Ilonggo/Ilongga/Cebuano is the person. Meanwhile, Hiligaynon is the language of Ilonggos and Bisaya is also the language of Cebuanos. :)

Ilo-ilo has two dialects. Karay-a and Hiligaynon. Your mom sounds talking in Karay-a. So she must have grown up in the north of Ilo-ilo.

Bisaya or Visaya is an umbrella term to refer to either the people of the Visayas Region or the Visayan languages. Examples of Visayan people: Boholanos, Cebuanos, Ilonggos, Negrosanon, Waray, etc. Each tribe/group has its own language. For example, Ilonggos speak either Hiligaynon or Kinaray-a (as their first language) or both. Ilonggo is the speaker, thus it is wrong to refer Ilonggo as a language. Another problem is that (most) people usually associate Bisaya/Visaya with the Cebuano language. It should not be because it is much wider in scope. Let' go to the specifics of the Hiligaynon language: (1) pamahaw is (specific to) breakfast, (2) utan is vegetable, (3) balinghoy is cassava, (4) lipong (dizzy/faint), daku (big), and gamay (small). Dialect means a variant of a certain language. For example, in the Cebuano language these are some of the dialects: Cebu Cebuano, Dumaguete Cebuano, Davao Cebuano, etc. Examples of Hiligaynon dialects: Iloilo City Hiligaynon, Bacolod City Hiligaynon, Capiz Hiligaynon, South Cotabato Hiligaynon, etc. I hope I have made things in proper perspective. Hi Ate!!! Illongo po is actually different from Bisaya and Cebuano , but there are certain similarities from words :) Also in my opinion Illongo is far more complex and Bisaya is mas madali inyindihin
