Without a doubt, this year will be worse than the last. I see a lot of commenters speak of Sam Altman in disparaging ways. I don’t know that there should be a comparison made. Both of these are bright in their own right and both were necessary for success, with each one having their strengths. Altman is a businessman and a successful one at that. Certainly more capable than most of the commentators unless you are one of the pioneers (doubt pioneers are saying this sort of stuff). But a comparison is not needed.
In a time not to far away, people will say “Wow! Look at that painting, that is actually really beautiful. And do you know what makes it so special? It’s made by a human, without the help of any AI. Completely on it’s own… isn’t that insane???”
I completely disagree that to be able to predict the next word means to understand. Words are abstract descriptions of things and until the AI has sensors to "experience" those things, it won't understand.
This 'understand' semantics is exhausting. It 'understands', within the domain of words, to some degree. Integrating vision, touch, sound, space, etc are all simply prediction lines to optimize for; we barely have the scale at the topmost datacenter to make virtual mice, and nobody in their right mind was going to drop $500 billion on making a virtual mouse. A less bad allegory of the cave will be build every couple years. It's not binary, it's a matter of degree and type.

The speaker, of course, is a respected person, but at the 12:30 he changes the thesis. The G in AGI stands for General. What does half the economy have to do with it? Does he know what money is currently in derivatives? A narrow AI effectively trading derivatives will generate much more profit than 50% of all profits in the economy. And manage funds larger than 50% of the economy. But, this will not make him AGI. 1000 different narrow AIs doing 50% of the work in the real economy will still not become General AI. This is either a misunderstanding or a deliberate deception 😥
A weaker robot may have committed suicide under stress as per recent news from South Korea, but a stronger robot may commit murder under stress. Incorrect. One can guess then next word without understanding any of it. All this AI hype will soon crash. AI is a tool, a very useful tool like all the others before and after it and that's about it. As for the fear-mongering, AGI, I won't even go there.
