I went to holy confession for the first time in 22 years yesterday, received communion in mass and returned to the church in part because of the work you have done. This message today brought me to tears of joy, thank you. God Bless you, and I am praying for you.

Dear Fr, Im a retired doctor. In my work I saw many people over the years who would not "get better" in spite of my very best efforts. I would beat myself up trying this or that, second guessing my knowledge, the way I managed their problem etc etc etc. I came to the realisation, like you, that there are some people who will never get better. Their problems are insoluble even by the best doctors in the world. My role therefore is to support them, help them get through life in the best way I can. Once I removed the burden of the "big cure" off my shoulders, I felt much better inside. I could more clearly focus my attention and medical energies to do the things within my powers and help these patients better, without the impossible expectations one can put on ones self. I wish you well Fr. Happy Christmas!

Father Casey, I am a doctor and I had my frustrations early in my career when I dealt with medical issues that I cannot fix for my patients and I later realized that I am an MD not GOD and I am glad that you realized that you are a father but not Heavenly Father. Many years ago as a new nurse, we had a 15 year old patient who we knew well because he had osteosarcoma. On the night he was dying, his oncologist was leaning against my desk and sort of talking to himself saying, "Did I do everything right? Did I do all I could?" 30 years later it stuck with me because I knew him to be a good man and capable physician yet he doubted himself in that moment. A priest is like a physician for our soul. Things don't always go the way we would like, but it's always in God's hands. Just know that you do help so many even if it's to give us words to share and in ways you will not be privy to until you meet our maker. And the physicians commenting, thank you too. Your job is so hard and I've learned a lot about life from some really great people with M.D. behind their name.

@@lnl3237 I appreciate your words. I agree with you that as fallen human race we are easily depleted because of our sins we can’t hold well to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. But with all respect, Jesus can’t be depleted because he is God and nothing impossible for him. I would probably chose the word disappointed from some of the humans who refuse to join him to his eternal kingdom. Don’t worry, I often use wrong words to describe an idea. Fr. Casey, when I became a nurse 32 years ago, many people said: “You can change the world.” I couldn’t even change nursing. In over 30 years, nurses still face the same challenges with staffing, pay, benefits, and respect that we have faced the entire time, some areas have mild improvement, some have backslidden. I have come to understand that I can’t change anyone. All I can do is meet them where they are, give them reasons to change, and love them no matter the outcome of their decisions. Burnout is a moral injury, it shows that you’re involved in things you care deeply about. Make sure you take time to spend time with people that refill you, because many people take emotional and spiritual energy from you. That energy has to be replaced. Yours in Him, Amy

I simply want to say: look at Mary! She stood at the foot of the Cross, unable to prevent her Son to be slaughtered by the Roman soldiers... Whenever I feel submerged by too many problems (my husband got a brain tumor at the age of 41, with four young children to raise...) I ask Mary to hold my hand and stand close to Her by the Cross, looking to Her and to Jesus... We need not change the world, we need to change our heart. Our small contribution being offered to Jesus, makes it possible for Him to do miracles. I can testify He worked miracles in my life! He is my Lord and my King. I can only hope and pray to remain steadfast until I can meet Him! God Bless!

When u pray u should first pray to God(Jesus) cause nothing happens without allowing it. Sure He gave power to his disciples and Mother but nothing would happen without Him bc He works through them not theirselves bc they can't do anything without His power. So basically first pray to God and ask if He work through other disciples . Sure u can pray to the disciples for help or strength but remember God works through them and u should know that nothing happens without Him allowing it.

the Serenity prayer: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." (and I usually add: "And Lord, smack me upside the head if I start to act like a know-it-all who treats You like a genie.") But humour aside, this reminds me of something I read in a devotional once: "Sometimes it takes greater faith to allow something to fall apart than to keep praying to stop it from happening." Sometimes we really need to let go and let God. Is it difficult? UhhYES. A daily battle for me. But sooner or later I reach the point where I have no choice but to say "God, I give up. I give in. It's Your turn now."

This reminded me of a line from The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. For context, the line is spoken by a demon, addressing another. “Do not be deceived, Wormwood. Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy's will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.”

I love this. It’s just like it’s said in the Mass, “Through Him, with Him and In Him”. It’s His Kingdom. His plan. We do the human stuff, He does the superhuman stuff. All outcomes end in Him. Whether we sit in the shade of the trees we planted or not. We may never see the results of our obedience or sacrifices. We Love. Because He first loved us.

"My actions do nothing to fix the problem" This hit me hard especially when no one else is listening. There are moments that we felt burned out while others think we are lazy for which it was common but they need to think if they were in our shoes, they will feel the same as what we feel if we are close to giving up. It's normal to step back and take a break.

I have been in the same boat, and, I had to accept the fact that I can't change everyone and everything. I don't respond to every negative thing I see on Facebook or Twitter. I bypass that completely now. I can't change the minds of folks that have no desire to be open to a challenge. I understand that when speaking of faith matters with others, that, sometimes, I am the one who plants the seed, and someone else will have to do the watering of that seed. I pray and know that my prayers are being heard, and answered, deferred or denied, according to His plans. One day we will find out what prayers really impacted others. You are appreciated. You don't have to be perfect. It is part of being human. Keep up the battle!

Thank you for this video Father Casey. It’s thanks in part to your videos that I looked and really studied into the Catholic faith and made the decision recently to start RCIA. I thank you because I really needed to see your video today. Currently going through some struggles of my own similar to you where you just feel no matter how hard you try, some people are just resistant to change, which especially hurts in my situation as it deals with a close relative in my family. In a time when it may not be socially acceptable to be religious, it means a lot to me to know people out there can see all the good things Catholicism has to offer. I am also going through a struggle with a family member. I can't fix it and I wish so much that I could. I have tried so many ways and nothing works. So I have to accept that I just can't fix this, at least now. Maybe God has another time and another way for me. God bless you on your journey 🙏

My wife and I are foster parents and we have had to reach this point with several of the kids we've had in our home over the years. These kids come from incredibly hard places and often do not believe they are worth someone's love and care, so they act out in ways to encourage distance and discourage any level of emotional intimacy. We've had various levels of success in overcoming those boundaries, but most of the time the walls are up. All we can do is demonstrate love and care, to each other and to them, and pray that that image of "normalcy" embeds in their brains even a fraction of the degree that their dysfunctional upbringing is lodged so that, when they become adults, they might feel a draw for what we offered them. But, it's not our job and we are unable to change their minds to accept *any* of that. Some may never and we have to be okay with that. We have to give up that need to be successful. Thank you for your kind and thoughtful display of vulnerability. And prayers and best wishes from another person who has recently had to give up.

If you really want to help start calling yourselves guardians not parents. As an adoptee who was never wanted I can tell you that half truths are whole lies and you will never reach these kids at all until you reach out to them as helpful caring adults not as some kind of replacements for relationships that are not replaceable or equal. No parent is equal to another and some are no good at all to themselves or others. I wound up with four adults who were supposed to be legally responsible for me two of them were my parents who at 21 could not think of anyone but themselves, so they sold me to people to cover my mother's hospital stay who couldn't even be fully responsible for a cat let alone a rejected child. The lies I was told growing up and the hurtful untrue things that were said to me and the isolation and emotional and sexual abuse were worse than being aborted. I forgive my parents one of which died before I found my family who were all told I had died of a heart defect and I have put my legal guardians in God's hands to deal with as God sees fit. But what happened to me and worse is what happens to other kids that is as bad or worse than I experienced is not ok and If you call yourself a believer you are under Gods law to treat them as the bible says the fatherless the orphaned and the oppressed are to be treated. When you reach the last of your reserves pray because giving up on them is not an option ever if you are a follower of the way and not a worshiper of what feels good at the moment.

@@songoftheblackunicorn666 I appreciate your response and experience as an adoptee and your concern for others in similar situations. I want to start by saying I respect and honor your experience and I think you share a lot in common with the trauma and agony that our foster kids have gone through. I cannot imagine the emotional and physical pain you have endured and I would not wish that on anyone. Children deserve so much more than an experience like that. Some of the kids who have been in our home have gone through similar things (though none quite the same). It's just terrible and it breaks my heart to ever hear it happened again. I think we might have some miscommunication about some parts of my post. I hope to clarify some things in hopes we can reach a greater understanding. First, my wife and I are primarily foster parents, not adoptive parents. So far, we've had more than two dozen kids come through our home over the past 10 years, but none of them have stayed and been adopted by us. Most of them just stayed with us for a few days or weeks and then moved back home with their biological family. Another was unable to stay in our home for safety reasons and had to be moved elsewhere. But we don't try to replace their family. For the kids who have stayed with us longer, we have tried to "parent" them as best as we can and know how. We always try to do our best for the child and many who are now older come back to see us. One kid who stayed with us for 2 years before going back home to his dad's house calls us his "step-parents" and comes by to see us even though we don't have any legal guardianship with him. He just considers us part of his family now. Where I live, the government defines legal terms for biological parent, foster parent, adoptive parent, and legal guardian. The term 'guardian' is specific where I live and means something different from what my wife and I do. My wife and I do not approach it as trying to replace the biological parents. In fact, of the kids who have stayed in our home, we always try to have a positive, supportive relationship with the biological family and it has worked out wonderfully as we all get to have a good relationship with the kids and each other. When I say things like "various levels of success" or "give up that need to be successful", I don't mean give up on the child. I mean that I need to give up my own expectations for the kind of deep connection I envisioned when I got trained to be a foster parent. Even if I told some kids the whole truth, which I try to do every day, some kids have post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, self-loathing, etc. I cannot fix those things. It will take years and years of therapy and the love and support of many people and the grace and movement of God to repair the damage done by their biological parents and others around them who contributed to the trauma. One person sows the seed, another waters, but God makes it grow. I haven't given up on any child yet, even the one who was forced to leave for safety reasons. I still hope and pray we can be a part of their life when things are safe again. I just want to end by saying again that I am so sorry to read about how much you went through as a child. Each of those things were burdens you should not have had to bear. I don't know your real name, but I will pray for you and hope that you have found healing in God and in positive relationships now that you are older. You have my very best, NP

My heart aches with the weight of lies and how impossible it is to turn them around.. so when I heard your words it was like a message of encouragement.
