I’ve heard versions recorded before Nazareth’s (Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison), but Nazareth’s studio version destroys the others, because their version is done in a way that the listener can feel the pain and heartache Dan McCaffrety is trying to convey with that raspy voice of his. You don’t get that from the other versions.

I'm 61 now. When we were 16 and 17, cruising town all night with a 6 pack on the console (bad I know)...Nazareth greatest hits was a MUST HAVE on the 8 track. THIS FLIGHT TONITE is an epic Nazareth song. YThe raspiness in The singers voice is amped up a bit . It's trippy and it's got a supreme groove. Check it out. Factoid...Nazareth are a Scottish band. Huge when I was a teen.

Up next by Nazareth... 'This Flight Tonight'. :) BTW... Musicians and professional singers refer to that 'rasp' in the voice as a shredding or shred of their voice. It's most often purposely done particularly by rock and metal singers. :)

That vocal style of singing associated with metal singers actually goes right back to the mystery plays of the 13th century when the character of the Devil was portrayed with a raspy growl. It is called vox diaboli.

@@angharaddenby3389 Thanks! I did not know that. 😀 I had called it called a shred of the voice on 'The Voice' by the coaches as well as '... Got Talent' and it was very descriptive and calling it 'rasp' or 'raspy' didn't cut it as it was more a straining of the voice than someone just having a 'raspy throat' or something. 'Vox diaboli' certainly has the Latin root (Italian?) and I like it!

The Lead singer of Nazareth is Dan McCafferty and his voice usually does sound that way. Other songs you might want to check out "Hair Of The Dog", "Miss Misery", "Changin' Times", Whiskey Drinkin' Woman", "Beggars Day-Rose In The Heather" and "Please Don't Judas Me", all of these songs are cool.

Great song! Original version was done by the Everley Brothers in July 1960. Both brothers are dead now, but their music still rocks! Please check them out, I know you'll love their version too

If you check out Nazareth before they got real popular it's that real popular they had some great songs then also. I suggest just as I suggested a couple of days ago that you check out the song "Shapes of Things" on their 3rd album Rampant and also the song "Razamanaz" on their second album with the same name Razamanaz.

Take a listen to Hair of the Dog (title track of the album, same one that had Love Hurts), This Flight Tonight, and Razamanaz. Also, interesting note, their song Telegram is about the group getting telegrams to send them on the start of a concert tour. They used to open their shows with that song, of course!!

Just an FYI.... A lot of the live songs don't compare to the studio versions. Some a better. But this particular one is much much better as a studio recorded version. Love the song though. It is a great song. #doobob95z
