Image processing is considered by some to be a dark art, but it really doesn't always need to be this way. In this video I take you though my usual typical processing workflow to show you how I work on at least 50% of the images you see of mine; and just to make it a little bit more interesting. The image has never seen the light of day until now.
The video also touches upon focus stacking, sharpening, adding white borders and preparation for a video timeline.

This was most helpful Simon - thank you. Also the best incentive to upgrade my 10yr old MacBook Pro and start running Photoshop 2024!

Thank you, Simon. I upgraded my Mac system last year and it was a little bit expensive to say the least. Good luck.

That's a big! thumb's up for showing a simple process of an image that was so effective. Lovely image for any wall. I only use Photoshop CC and it can all be done in raw. Actually I do all my sharpening in raw at the very end. Already waiting for the next Video.

I love your work, you have a great eye for composition. Thanks for sharing your editing process. I've been trying to figure out how to get my in-video images sharp and your tips on how you do it for video was very helpful. I look forward to your next video - whether in the field or in front of your computer!

what a capture! Really great to be able to follow you processing an image. I haven't ever got to grips with Ps as I didn't come to photography until I was 50 and my wee brain could not cope with learning LrC and Ps! I can just about work my way around LrC now! It seems so easy when you do it!

PS can be a bit hard to learn because the UI is not as friendly or intuitive compared to more ‘modern’ softwares. I’ve been using PS since I was 15 (I’m 40 plus now), and one thing I would suggest new users do is to learn the concepts first (as opposed to learning the steps). Once you know the basic layout out the software, spend some time to understand the concept of layers, selections, layer blending modes, masking, adjustment layers, channels, and so forth. By doing this, it’ll be easier to figure out a way to achieve what you want to with your images; instead of relying on ‘lists of steps to do’. Good luck!

I suppose I’ve been lucky Jill in that I’ve followed Photoshop from the start. I’ve never considered myself a wizard, but I certainly know enough to get by.

That was an great video! I had no idea about the white and black slider trick in Lightroom and now I will have to play with it like that when I'm editing.

Beautiful image Simon , as we know getting it right in the field means minimal edits ...I still recall coming across your video how to use the high pass method...I like to see these videos occasionally 😊

Thanks, Brian. The vast majority of my images get very little editing at all, but as you say, get it right in the field and there’s not much to do at the computer.

Beautiful image and editing! Raising the whites using the "White" slider until it clips doesn't work well 8/10 times for me as well because it pushes the saturation up not just the brightness, and even though the mask (by holding ctr) and the histogram report no clipping, i often find the red channel pushed a bit too much and i'll lose details in the yellows and oranges. In general i'd say push until you see clipping and then bring it down by about 25-30

Hi Simon, I loved both the photo and the video, it was really helpfull seeing you process the image. I was wondering, what resolution you would use if you were to make a print of that same image?
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 2 месяца назад
I would use the same resolution. 300 pixels per inch and just alter the length and width of the photograph to suit whatever print size you want. For the films I use pixels to determine the width of the image but when I’m printing I use centimetres or inches.

do you have to create a copy in order to use the high pass filter? If not why do you do it? I also did not understand why you created copies of all the layers early on. I just don't understand how photoshop processing works, too difficult for my low iq intellect.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 2 месяца назад
Hi Steve. Yes, I created a duplicate layer for the high pass filter. You have to do this otherwise it destroys the image. The high pass filter is applied to the duplicate. The duplicate layers that I made enable me to go back and rectify any mismatches that Photoshop has made with the stacking process, if I’m happy with the stacking process, then I can delete them. It’s basically just a belt and braces approach.
@steveh1273

@@SimonBoothPhotography Thank you for the reply. Could you also adjust the mask of the problematic layer(s) instead? And are the original raws still available in Lightroom after you deleted the layers?
