Images of Vietnam from 1995

These photographs were taken during my first visit to Vietnam back in 1995. This, of course, was long before the days of digital cameras and smartphones
and small, portable video cameras like a GoPro. I was only able to take a few pictures, mainly on slide film. And then these were digitized decades later.
Being so long ago, I don't remember all the details of where the pictures were taken, but in my short time in Vietnam, I travelled by train and small vans from Saigon to Hanoi, stopping off at some of the famous coastal cities.
I'm not 100% sure of the type of camera I was using, but I believe it was a classic Yashica FX-3 camera body with a 50mm prime lens, plus a very cheap telephoto lens that I picked up in a kind of junk shop in Saigon.

I am from NYC. I started work here in 1995 and also still remain now retired. But came first in 1988 and have been here every year since 1988. We went to the Vietnam mission to the UN in 1987 (NYC) and asked to see the Vietnamese mission chief. He received us at his apartment at the Waterside Towers. He could not make any visa for us but told us he would arrange for one in Bangkok. We travelled to Bangkok in February 1988 with nothing but his word but did get the visa as promised. It began an amazing journey!

You had first hand of how incompetent the "moronic" VC government was. More than 1 million freedom loving Vietnamese people (mostly South Vietnamese with a few Northern Commies (why did the Northern Commies also leave?) fled the country. More than 500,000 died at sea. Remember South Vietnam was richer than Sth. Korea before 1975. The VC dragged the South down to poverty and starvation to feed the North through open robbery of ALL assets including rice production causing the farmers to starve as well. Now they claim success by re-introducing Capitalism into the system the South had before 1975 and they called it "Doi Moi". What a joke? But it is NOT funny. The South is still a quantum leap ahead of the North even with severe tax stolen from Saigon.

That's was mesmerising watching those images. You and your camera was the witness of the transformation of Vietnam. And upto some extent those memories of 1995 tells the story of you as well Mr .Doug.

It's difficult to believe that 1995 was nearly three decades ago. To me, it feels like it was yesterday. It's also difficult to believe that a country can change so much in what feels like a relatively short time. But that's one thing I've seen in my lifetime. All the countries that I visited back then have become completely different places. And with the introduction of the internet and affordable air travel, even the nature of going overseas itself has changed into something completely different. I'm glad I got to experience both within my lifetime. 🙂

My goodness those pictures are really superb. Especially since this was before digital, we're you just using a 35mm slr? I suppose we took more care with images then but these are all great and numerous! I don't think people would be so natural when being photographed like then too

Thank you. I was using a typical camera from that era. It was a Yashica FX-3, and I was using slide film. Decades later, I scanned the slides to digitize them and make these copies. As Wikipedia describes it, "The FX-3 was a very popular, manually-operated, 35mm single lens reflex camera, released by Yashica in 1979. These inexpensive cameras have developed a reputation for reliability, mostly due to their extremely simple construction and durable metal chassis with plastic outer shell."

Thankyou yes I see now that you wrote about it under the video. This reminds me of when Vivien Maier was discovered in that she amassed thousands of images and each one was fascinating in its own right. I like these videos of stills

Thanks for sharing the treasure. Yashica / 50 mm lens was a nice camera.
@PlanetDoug

It was one of those cameras that had a reputation. It had a following for some reason. I know that in my case, I was interested in the Yashica camera bodies because they had a deal with Contax, and you could mount Contax lenses on Yashica camera bodies. The Contax camera bodies were far too expensive, so this was a inexpensive way of being able to use the high-quality Contax (Zeiss) lenses on an affordable camera body. I know that I bought a Contax 50mm lens in Hong Kong at some point, but I can't remember if I had it during my time in Vietnam.

Doug. Amazing photos. Life was so different then but the people were full of smiles. My dad was a good photographer too. He passed away in 2023. He took a lot of our family photos but you seldom see him in any of the photos. When we had smart phones, we took lots selfie with him.

You're welcome. It's a pleasure to share them and let other people enjoy a glimpse into Vietnam from the '90s. It's funny that in terms of my lifetime, the '90s feel like yesterday. Yet, these pictures from the '90s feel like they are from generations ago. It seems to me that Vietnam has changed so much.
