Imagine riding into Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, climbing to the top of the Cemetery Gate, and taking in the view of the battle-scarred landscape. One war correspondent who did this is Charles Carleton Coffin (1823-1896). A well-known and welcome presence in the Army of the Potomac, he left behind an enormous volume of writing about the war.
