In the Civil War photograph collection at the Valentine Museum in Richmond, Va., is a glass plate copy of an original portrait of Confederate Brig. Gen. Evander M. Law and his military family. The whereabouts of the original portrait was a mystery-until it turned up at a collector's show in early 2024. Here's the story.

Wow. That is amazing. There is a photo of my grandad’s unit in 1914 at Braintree in Essex England on the internet which I know he must be in but I can’t be sure which is him even though I knew him well in later life and have other photos from that period of him. That was taken just before they went to France. That shows how challenging identifying some of these old pictures can be. Also a lot of these guys had bushy beards as well. My son has a big beard and if he shaved it off I might not recognize him either!

Solid MI article on Law. His evaluation of the failure to flank the Feds at Round Top is telling.

Great detective work with very plausible conclusions. Has facial recognition software been tried to ID soldiers? The collection may have enough images

Great info!!! I studied E.M.Law a lot many years ago. He suffers a nasty wound above his eye at Cold Harbor so this must be before that battle. I also think his left arm is the bent one from the 1st Manasass wound. I have a copy of a photo taken way later in his life in front of his home in Bartow, FL. Again, that same arm is bent the same way.

Very good research to narrow down that month/year photo setting. I agree,1864, because the uniforms look battle weary and worn but still intact. Photos were a luxury and dictated participants to be dressed in their best (on some, buttons are missing). This photo tells how the Confederacy is suffering supply shortages. The occasion when two brothers could be in a photo together would warrant the cost.

As an oddly obsessed scholar of all things Evander Law, this photo find is absolute gold! Many thanks. Based on the evidence shared, this is likely post Gettysburg and of course well beyond the Peninsula campaign. Fascinating. The brother’s posting and presence and qaulity of image suggests Richmond studio very plausible.

I was hoping that they had all survived the war. I can imagine them getting up after the photograph was taken and putting their hats back on and laughing and talking and going back to their business of being soldiers. They were real people living and dying during a historical event.

If this is a reverse image, why is everyone’s coat buttoned in reverse except Laws ?

I've consulted with a few folks about this, and the consensus is that coat buttons were non-standard. A few issues back, we came acorss another image of a Confederate soldier in a single-breasted coat that was buttoned the "wrong" way. More scholarship on this aspect of material culture is needed. Appreciate you calling this out.

(Warning: this is a mood spoiling post. Sorry) The older I get, the more I think about how these were just regular people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. They had families and the same hopes and fears as anyone else. I'm finding it difficult to enjoy reading books about the war as much as I used to. My mind wonders to the absolute tragedy of it all. The waste. The carnage. The loss of human and animal life. The suffering. The suffering of the wounded who managed to survive. The suffering... mental, physical and financial, of the soldiers and/or their families for generations after the war. Sometimes I can only read for a short time before I have to stop and put down the book and try to think of more positive things. That's not even including the near total ignorance of the war and it's complicated history by so many of today's people, who infuriatingly often only know how to repeat some condescending hate filled sound bites.

I can understand that. Those of us of a certain age grew up reading Catton or Freeman or cherished their American Heritage collections. Today’s writers have a greater abundance of material to glean through with just a click of their mouse which leads to more accounts from the foot soldiers and the suffering they had to endure. Where books from 100 years ago were more about gallantry of the officers today’s seem to focus more on the soldiers suffering.
