IMAX 2000 vs. MaCo V 5/8 CB Antennas

The proof is on the meter. An IMAX 2000 will tune all over the band and give you a great SWR; but so will a dummy load. The SWR might be right, but the x factor is always high. Check out the numbers the MaCO puts out. It may not tune all over the band, but it is very resonant where you tune it.

There is no substitute for surface area. The i-max is really only a #12 wire wrapped with fiberglass. I have both antennas and I can tell you the v-58 is the better antenna hands down. Now you can impress me with all the technical data from using a mfj 259 or tech specs but the proof is in the receive. The metal antenna will always be quieter and that equals better ears. The only way to get wide bandwidth with the maco is change the overall length.

@@xjohn1970 I didnt know aluminum antennas rust out...I have a vintage WILSON v58 before maco bought them its been up since 1982, and I can assure you your Imax will be long gone by then with your matching capacitor failing and have to replace the whole antenna...funny thing if mine gets bent or broken I can just order a piece of tubing, not have to order a whole other antenna.....

R is resistance, X is reactance. You want R as close to 50 as you can, and X AS CLOSE TO ZERO AS YOU CAN. MACO IS THE CLEAR WINNER

Anytime you add a coil to tune the longer vertical element you will lose bandwidth, The .64 is the longest and most efficient single radiator antenna, then 5/8 wave, then 1/2 wave, then 1/4 wave. If you want to increase bandwidth expand the size of the canter radiator. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work Rekindling The Reformation !!

Respectfully, the most "efficient" antenna is one without a matching network. A quarter wave monopole mounted against a flat ground will have an impedance of around 36 ohms, but by bending the radials down at an angle of 45°, we increase this to around 50 ohms, a perfect match to 50 ohm coax. Since no matching network is necessary, it is, without any doubt, the most "efficient" antenna. A typical 1/2 wave antenna is around 2000-3500 ohms, requiring a lossy L/C circuit or high ratio impedance matcher such as a 64:1 unun to match the antenna to 50 ohms. The increased capture aperture or gain for single radiating element increases as the radiating element length is increased until the length of the radiator exceeds the magical 5λ8 wave length at which point the increasing radiator length causes the radiation pattern to begin breaking up into a number lobes and nulls. The optimum length is, in fact, equal to or just slightly less than 0.6λ, the .64 is a myth as antenna modeling software will confirm. The trick is to make the 5/8 radiator 'appear' to the feed line as if it were a 3/4 wave length; establishing a good impedance match while at the same time achieving the ideal low angle of radiation that can be realised through the 5/8 wave radiator. By add a series loading coil at the base of the radiator to compensate for the lost 1/8 section, a match of close to 50Ω can be obtained. It is also much easier to design a matching circuit for a 5/8 wave radiator than the more extreme impedance presented by the 1/2 radiator. So, a properly constructed 5/8 antenna will have gain over a 1/4 or 1/2 wave antenna, but remember, physics demands that nothing is created without a loss. Also 5/8 wave antennas are an excellent choice for mountain top or tower mounting. Using a 5/8 antenna in a valley is a recipe for a very bad signal.

@@timmack2415 Very good information, *_mostly._* The problem with a 5/8 is that it has a very low angle and a very high angle, and unfortunately the high angle (when the ionosphere is at the right conditions and height) will cancel the low angle at certain distances, therefore 5/8 waves are known to have a "Dead Donut" area which unfortunately is also an intermittent and can never be counted on because it varies from there to not there, and from a certain distance to less or more than that distance, depending upon the "mood" of the ionosphere. Now, if you're referring to a 5/8 wave like the Sirio GainMaster design, well now you have a completely different beast than a standard bottom-fed 5/8 - which is closer to a balanced dipole, but an eighth wave longer than a half wave, and with all currents in phase. Against THAT Omni I know of none which can favorably compete. A full size half wave can be an efficient antenna if you use a J-pole style matching Network beneath it, such as the Sirio Vector style, unfortunately I do not care for gamma matches - but there are other ways which it can be driven, and one option in particular can be Directly-driven, but that is my secret 😜

talked all over the country and out of the country on a Max 2000. good antenna mine adjusted for 36-40- free band and almost all of 10 meters. I have the adjustment wheels towards to top. go lower than ch 30 11 meter the SWR starts to go up.
@BirdyBuilt
@BirdyBuilt 12 лет назад
you should look for the lowest reactance (X=Ø), not the lowest SWR when adjusting any matching device. Once the matching device is properly adjusted, the minimum SWR point on your transceiver (or external SWR meter) will be very close to the actual resonance point of the antenna.
@slickman1953
@slickman1953 12 лет назад
Zero reactance or resonance can occur on frequencies where the antenna is not actually resonant. Conversely, the antenna may appear to contain reactance even at its true resonant frequency when measured through a feedline.

I have had an I-Max 2000 for about 11 years now. And have run much power through it. We have much wind ( up to 70 MPH ) and I have never had any problem with it. The power was 1K and less but this thing really kept with the program. What you should watch in high power AMP stuff is your cable.

I have a IMAX 2000 up and a Maco V5000 and see no real kick butt difference between the two. Both have their plus and minuses I like the IMAX 2000 a little better because it’s far more wide banded. The Maco I give a plus to for it being a little quieter by not picking up a lot of atmospheric noise when the band is trashy. I live in the country away from other houses and a bunch of man made electronically induced interference so the IMAX ain’t all bad on the noise. Now if I lived in an area with more people or in a city with the possibility of man made noise interference I’d get an Aluminium antenna like the Maco but in the country and loving to slip all around the band chasing DX give me the IMAX 2000 if the band is quite at night I can talk and hear pretty much the same on them both.

Just to make sure this point is as clear as possible... With respect to the input impedance of an antenna (mobile or otherwise) when the frequency is moved away from the true resonance point, the resistive component increases faster than the reactive component. In other words, the apparent SWR decreases, however, the antenna is no longer in exact resonance!

The Maco is a good mono band antenna for the chicken chasers. For multi band coverage, the IMAX 2000 is hands down better. Plus its a .640 wave antenna (closer to the full wave than a 5/8 wave antenna) .

My maco wouldn't tune on 11meters until it was under 19 ft. the maco is not a true 5/8 wave. It's closer to a 1/2 wave. My "dummy load" out performed the "fake o" at 30+ mile by half an s unit. both were mounted at 25ft. to the bottom of the antenna. I was really disappointed with the 1/2 wave maco. Any time it would rain the swr would rise into the red.The bandwidth of the maco is very narrow. I could only get 900khz out of it. It wasn't any quieter than the max either. WTF!! Maybe the newer maco's are different than the older ones.

You are correct I bought a "Faco v58" tuned it for 11 meters. You are correct about the SWR When it rains it shoots up between a 2 & 3 to one every time. Most any 1/2 wave would out perform the maco v58. The so called tuning ring does not tune this antenna the bottom section of the main radiator " that's adjustable does" & like you already stated is not broadbanded. These tuning specs are for 40 channels & that's all you get. It hears pretty decent talks skip ok transmits short distances well & over hills but the SPT-500 or Vector 4000 Blow this antenna away.

@@coupescuts the reason why the IMAX 2000 breaks in high winds and the Antron 99 survives is simply because the IMAX 2000 is like six feet longer that extra six feet has enough leverage on the joint where the two sections go together it breaks it and time and time again when I see pictures of an IMAX that has broken or one that I've seen in person they all break right at the joint. if it was me, I know guys that use both, I would rather have the Antron 99. My imax is around 7 years old still have a perfect 1.0 swr. I liked the Imax as its wide banded and gets out well no complaints there. BUT recieve is another ball game. The difference between my Sirio Blizzard and the Imax is very Dramatic. Signals which are S3 to S6 and radio 5 on my blizzard. Disapear on the imax. And the volume from the radio is also louder on the blizzard when i switch in the Imax Its like the volumes suddenly been turned down. Unfortunately the Imax is deaf as a post compared to an alloy antenna. And you miss alot of contacts which are pretty strong on the blizzard. which is kinda shocking. The difference is like switching a good pre amp on and off. Yet you get a lower noise floor on the Blizzard at least 1 to 2 S point lower.

You guys really are silly! You wouldn't know a dipole from a flag pole more that likely. So many things you fellers have to learn and your video just shows a few of them. 1st off, learn how to use that analyzer! 30,40,50,60,70,80 Ohms is no big deal! Every antenna out there will read like that one did! Your ohms or impedance will only be 50 in a very narrow gap. By the way that was Ohms not reactance! Your reactance is what you were calling the X-factor lol. By the way, the Imax is not a 5/8 wave like advertised either. It's a .64 wave. By the way, .64 wave just happens to be the element length that is widely known to provide the highest gain in that area of the HF band too! Long story short boys, learn a lot more before trying to sh!t on a product because it's obvious you not only lack the knowledge but make yourself a fool. Those of us who actually know what we are talking about can truly understand that the Imax 2000 is actually about the best you can get really. If deployed PROPERLY the Imax 2000 is unbeatable.

How much does Solarcon pay you for advertising? Lol.
