Always keen on extreme audio experiences, Adam Rayner gets up close and personal with the technology behind the Imax experience. The deepest and loudest sound systems in regular performance use in the world, with accurate tight bass down to 20Hz and Sound Pressure Levels of up to 118dB! The Imax cinema system self-monitors with acoustic analysis microphones and an opticial science grade camera to check that auditorium performance is maintained. If a woofer dies, the system turns up the bass to compensate and the computer orders a new part from Canada. It even allows for the changes in screen and speaker performance through time! Odeon Uxbridge means digital Imax awesome sound and perfection of 3D visuals, too.
Imax is not not just watts and loudness, it is sonic holography and uses a Voice Of God 'height' speaker too, encoded all the way from the movie's sound director who mixed for Imax.
Lastly but NOT leastly: An ENORMOUS apology to Imax for getting their very nationality WRONG on the video vocals. They are Canadians, like my aunties in Toronto, so vast sorries for calling you guys 'Americans'!

Well, it does do 23Hz at a mighty 120dB odd but if you check out others of my vids that have the word hair trick in them, you may meet Jenny Hummell and Edd Elson as he basses her at 157dB of 27Hz. That is bass beyond reason but IMAX is about the utter perfection of control and huge bandwidth and placement accuracy.

Thanks. Each 2 12" drivers have the radiating area of 1.26 sq ft.So the total SW radiating area in this Imax is 10.08 sq Ft. The HPS-4000 system at the RPX Arkansas has 8 Fully Horn loaded Sub cabinets with 10.25 sq ft radiating area each. That equals to a total of 82 sq ft. 82 sq ft compared to 10.08...With all due respect but as you can see the Imax gets completely dwarfed when it goes up against HPS-4000. As a theatre sound lover you owe to yourself to Hear the RPX in Arkansas

12" has advantages, they're faster acting than 18" or 21" cones, and the relation between motor coil size and cardboard size is better (12 in dia vs 5 in dia coil over 18" vs 5" dia VC, leading to reduced partial resonations, as a result lower distortion level. But the key here is different, they are still vented Helmholtz resonator enclosures with direct radiating speakers. One 18" has about 0.16 m² of radiating area, one 12" about 0.07m², so 2 pc. 12" cones replace in radiating area, or the area that actually tries to move the air. One new enclosure therefore replaces one of the old double 18 inch boxes. Even though they seem to close couple 4 enclosures, which helps to gain sensitivity and "air movement", the principle itself is not capable of shifting large air masses. The speakers try to move "quickly" with high velocity to shift air, that reacts like a huge, multi ton block of air, achieving very little efficiency, doubtfully any at 20 cps. (If you hit at 70 mph with your car to a 2 ton block of concrete, you won't move the block, but ruin your vehicle. If you try to shift with high force over the whole block and slowly it moves with a fraction of energy required energy required than your car at 70mph carries in speed.) So basicly you're in for an acoustic transformer, which converts high velocity low area to high area low velocity couple. These things are known among speaker makers for years, and various principles have been developed from horns to tunnel porting, ... They all are significantly larger, and that is why theatres try to avoid them. Space in shopping malls is expensive. Something 6 to 7 feet deep multiplied with the giant screen length, is a lot of "wasted" square feet to be paid for monthly. Up to 118 dB (at the reference position in 2/3rd room length, sometimes simplified to half room length) SPL unweighted is what we expect for the LFE channels in theatres. (They are low frequency FX channels, no "Sub-Woofers", as the screen channels have to be full range from "20 to 20k" anyway. The difference they have to offer 20-50 times the power of the screen channels at the same frequency. But you may be right, I had to learn that (L)I(e)max theatres these days use a "bass management" approach... The cabinets shown are about 94 - 95 dB sensitivity at 1 Watt 1 meter. Four of them might actually gain another 4 - 6 dB by mutual coupling. With 100 dB of brut sensitivity at 1 Watt in 1 meter, we require about 56 dB over 1 Watt at the reference position, or 400.000 times the 1 Watt. Something impossible for the system shown. And from the book of fairy tales at 20 cps. What counts is the total radiating area, in this case 16 cones at 0.07m² roughly gives 1.25m² plus some resonator port area, way below 2 m². My own "Home"cinema system offers around 10m² radiating area in a hall that is a fraction of the size. With a 1 Watt sensitivity about 20 dB higher... So there is real bass, flat to 25 cps. (It is not recommended to go really deeper, as body veines resonate in that region, and might rupture, killing your patrons by internal bleeding... I did not know, but was strongly cautioned by an internal medicine physician) sound waves at 20 Hz reach somewhat 5 m wavelength, making it very difficult in rooms, that have a finite length to stay without standing waves etc. Some blocks away from the source with a really powerful system, it might actually shake another building quite significantly like a quake. Within a cinema complex it might give a feeling "I actually prefer the movie next door" These are the limiting factors in design, and Imax is no exception. The surrounds are way too small for the room. They will clip at higher mid levels. All in all the Imax approach shown here is a LIEmax approach, ... But there is one thing I have to admit, at least where I live, the local Imax is the only spot to watch movies for a paid ticket. The rest is so far behind, that you feel cheated immediately. Imax offers a minimum in picture quality(the are places which offer way better D-Cinema images I know of, but no sound at all) combined with an impressive screen. The sound system in our Imax (beside the tendency of the personal to lower the reference volume by 6 - 9 dB at show times over calibrated reference, not Imax conforming, I know)is mediocre, lacking 1.5 octaves in bass and 1.5 in treble reproduction. Even Rouge one made the surrounds clip at reduced levels. In total the system seems to be too smal and too conventional. But this is making complaints at quite high level.

Hi Please let me know about one thing. Are these array of 16 x 12 inch subwoofers are the only subs connected? what about the 18 inch subs are they connected? Generally they might not be connected together so I feel only the 12 inchers are connected. A major question is that what would be the size of the theater in feet these speakers are installed? Like how many seater? That makes sense in the overall volume these subwoofers are able to cover. But I have done the simulation and found that it can achieve about 122db at 45ft at 200RMS each driver.

If you mean the Mccain Mall, that location is epuipped with the HPS-4000 sound system, and they have doubled their number of subs to provide 82 sq ft radiating area to blow even IMAX, sky high. Not to mention their strage speakers are more powerful and cleaner sounding than the IMAX,

That theater looks upgraded as far as sound goes, but that screen is totally LieMax, lol. I've been to the real deal now.... IMAX Autonation Ft. Lauderdale Florida. IMAX Laser projection....top of the line. Oh it was good.... The Palm Beach location is still better than the theater in this video as it's not rectangular..... any IMAX screen that is a rectangle is LieMax. At least this video has the proper subwoofers and rear speakers. The little speakers on the wall indicate a former 5.1/7.1 dolby surround theater. That's also how you can tell LieMax... it was never built straight up as an Imax screen and has left over speakers. Too funny. Those speakers are not even being used... no sound comes from them.

I saw the original one in Niagara Falls. the film was 25 years old! And yes, some are more advanced than others.. this one is way better than the one we went to on Bluewater Showcase recently. And yes, I got it wrong about the wall speakers. They are in use for the background music. ONLY a 5.1 system in here...

They are now just bass trap absorbers. Point is, the smaller cones can be driven harder and have more driven motor force per square inch of cone as well as having a lower end Fs or 'preferred resonance' at least as low as an eighteen! But yes, the tuning is all and it DOES grasp your bones.
