It kinda depends on your use case. There are sorta two groups of people that use bluebubbles. 1) Android users who want to be in imessage chats (and presumably don't have iPhones with active SIM cards) -This is the largest group judging by the Discord population. Apparently a lot of iphone users are exclusionary jerks, and also SMS sucks -In this case it is true that you won't be able to send SMS from the bluebubbles app on android. You are using iMessage If you want to send a regular SMS from your phone number you will need to do it from your usual SMS messaging app. 2) iPhone users who want to be able to text from a non-Mac laptop/desktop (this is my situation) -In this case if you have imessage linked to your phone number, you can in fact send SMS from bluebubbles, or rather, if you message someone via bluebubbles that isn't on imessage, it will have your iphone send it as a regular SMS. 3) There is a niche case where you have an Android but you also have an iPhone and technically you could send SMS in this case like you can in #2 but it would not be from the same number as your android phone and I am not sure this is a desired use case. Edit: and just for clarity, all three of these cases require a Mac to pass messages back and forth.

@@mattlee297 Bluebubbles has way more functionality. This dude is behind in server versions. The latest does support Big Sur. The latest stable server allows tap backs, reactions, you can start new chats, you can send n receive screen effects, you can to reply on individual messages within a chat.

@@isrgroup SMS support in a unified app is the single most important feature for a cohesive user experience. RCS integration should be the next main priority for this to be a great user expereince

@@umlos I believe RCS is going to hard to do because it's proprietary to Google's messaging app.

Apple is leaving money on the table without selling a subscription to android users. But for the price, it should include RCS fallback and FaceTime.

For Bluebubbles, and I believe with Airmessage as well, it is a connection over internet, so you can continue to use it while you are away from your home network.

it comes via your email. so the receiver just adds your icloud email into your contact card and it fixes that. unless your phone number is connected to your icloud (some carriers dont let that) you cant text via your actual number.

Yeah it is unfortunately the only way around the walled garden. The go-to advice is usually to get like a used 2012 Mac Mini but obviously that still is a pretty big barrier to a lot of people.

I use bluebubbles without disabling SIP, you should only have to do that to enable the private API (which is for like, reacts and stuff)

no, because the computer is the server. it has to be left on. i leave my macbook on with the lid closed with Amphetamine.

Nothing to worry about because it has an active cooling fan.
