It's not in the base standard so GSMA meets various counties telecommunications laws. It can be added like other features with extensions like Google has done. So Apple can do it.
@@Spoonfed78 Is that true? In those countries, how does Google handle those regulations with their existing E2EE solution? It seems like the GSMA can add E2EE to the RCS spec and still allow governments to force carriers/OEMs to disable it for devices sold in those countries.
@@_____case GSMA has the details of the universal profile on their web. It's in a way modular by design. Has the ability also to be connected into 3rd party messaging too, which may happen in time due to the EU. Google has signed into the open cross platform e2e messaging thing also, I can imagine Apple couldn't think of anything worse. So yes Apple can implement whatever, they choose not too. It's simple. Yet Apple cares about security is all people blab. Down here in the backwater RCS has been around 9 years via carriers, it's not exactly new.
One thing I just wondered, I've seen memes mocking the video/photo quality of androids before and now I wonder if a bunch of people thought that the images/videos they recieved through MMS were the real quality lol
Honestly you're absolutely right. I live in the UK and the number of moronic iPhone users that have this mentality is unfathomable to say the least. It drove me crazy to the point I had educate allot of my friends about it just because they openly and shamefully mocked andriod users for having inferior video quality (so to speak) whilst having absolutely zero idea why.
This is exactly why. They see the potato quality photo and assume that's what photos look like when taken by Android phones, not realizing that more often than not, some Android phones actually take better photos than their iPhones 😂 Hopefully RCS helps with that misconception a little, another reason I'm excited for RCS to finally come to iPhone
A good bit of people probably did think that, but this is also due to most android social media apps taking lower quality pictures/videos than if they were done in the native android camera app itself. I think this has been mostly remedied recently though
People should stop calling this "an issue". It was a choice that needed to be made. A choice to artificially impact perception if Android to iPhone users. Borderline criminal really
As an android user surrounded by mainly iPhone friends, I most look forward to being able to text over WiFi. My college is in a location where my signal is spotty at best, and this past year has been somewhat a nightmare when trying to communicate with friends. Can't wait for the full RCS release!
@@Not_Like_Us87 Yep, I use WiFi calling, but it only seems to works like 50% of the time. Texting also doesn't work at all unless I have a signal. So WiFi calling helps the situation, but it is still pretty unreliable.
Do you live in the US? If you do I wanna ask some questions about this andorid and iPhone things bcs I'm so confused. I wanna move to the us a year from now but I don't wanna change my android phone to an iphone
@@Anonymous-sm9ld Yeah I live in the US. I wouldn't worry about needing to switch phones. Approximately half the population uses Android, it works pretty well. But yeah ask away!
Exactly. My whole family is on iPhone and I was able to update my wife's phone but the rest of family refuse to right now and God knows when they will when it's officially released.
1st off. I don't care about bubble color. I don't want Ppl to see if I read their text. What I care about most is the high resolution file sharing. That's it.
The only feature that I care about that’s missing is in line replies. Idc much about e2ee since I don’t get it anyway with sms. When it comes it will be great but no sense complaining about it now
Here in the states. A LOT of my generation (Gen Z) are picky because of that. They're always like "ew" in some way, shape, or form. Even people older than me (I was born in the early 2000s) Life lesson: avoid those people at all costs if you want to live a good and/or better life.
Damn, ths is wild. I remember being made fun of back in the day for having green bubbles from girls, friends etc. I never cared or let it affect me as i have always had android since the beginning. But to the ppl that it does affect thats dope tbh. Im sure more ppl will branch out now cause really the features that RCS brings makes the iphone to android gap that much smaller. This is a major win for android to say the least. What a time to be alive :)

They've admitted all these things, internal memos have come out. They do it in your face with Tim "buy your mum an iPhone" comments on a question from the press. @@phire4694so basically you think there should be a monopoly on texting features. That's so dumb. Apple has been the problem all along. We get "iMessage features"...it's called RCS and it works between Android phones.
Absolutely false about the colors. Everyone cares. Apple specifically curated that hue of green to be unappealing to look at so iPhone users wouldn't want to interact with Android users.
Well I think he was talking specifically about himself, but I agree with everything you said. It's definitely still an issue, and has been said to ostracize some young kids and teens from group chats.
Well that just shows how shallow they are then. To care and complain that much about the color of a text bubble is very shallow. The experience will be much better which is what matters, not the stupid color.
@@HollowSentence22 My point is not whether or not it's petty to care about the color. My point is that keeping the green still means Android users can be selected and ostracized. I know so many kids that get bullied for being "poor" because they have an Android. Things like the green chat bubble are what empower that kind of behavior.
@@braytonakfalse. The difference between blue and green came out with iOS 5. When iMessage was introduced. It was meant to distinguish between iMessages and SMS messages.
Great video Jordan! 🙌🏾 Thanks for doing a side-by-side comparison! I can't wait until the fall when it becomes stable on iPhone. Welcome to RCS Messaging, iPhone friends! 🙌🏾
Too many people still don't comprehend that iMessage is NOT an app. It's a messaging protocol. Messages is the app that iPhones use. Messages supports SMS, MMS, iMessage, and now RCS.
It's absolutely an app. I bet my life savings ($50) that if the government told Apple you have 24 hours to release an app for the Android devices to use iMessage(messages) that they already have it developed in their vault right now.
@@B-RaDD No it's not. You're still confusing the app (Messages) with the messaging service (iMessage). If iMessage is an app, then that's all it would do on Apple devices: iMessage. But the app (Messages) can also send and receive SMS, MMS and now RCS messages because they are messaging services, just like iMessage.
It is actually just an app that combines text messages (and now also using RCS) and Apple's own instant messaging service just like other apps do on Android. The only reason you believe it's not an app is that Apple does not allow third party apps to do the same which makes making it a "system app" while on Android Google Messages is the "equivalent" but there are also 3rd party ones. The basic concept of both iOS and Android is based on Apps, even if it's an exclusive app that comes with the device and cannot be uninstalled. Apple continues to limit services to it's won system apps while Android never did but on the first Android versions the "system" apps were part of the system, like with iOS, with updates provided through the regular OS updates but that quickly change and even "system" apps are updated regularly through the regular play update system, even if the device itself does not get OS updates.
Glad to see the implementation progress even though it took THIS long. The only thing that bothers me is most videos/articles are displaying this as a feature iPhone is bringing and not a tech they refused to implement to hold people inside iMessage. Your video hinted at the "finally" portion. It's crazy that Apple had to be sued to put this in. Even crazier (great job marketing) that most Apple users don't even know what iMessage really is and that they have been missing rcs/the upgraded TEXTING experience.
@@Smoshylife they are two different things. iMessage is a data messaging service like Whatsapp and Facebook messenger. RCS is the next gen texting (sms/MMS). It is the superior version of THAT and Apple had to get sued to implement it. Apple users just thought that all other phones sent bad pictures via "iMessage" but it was really that Apple was forcing their customers to continue to use an outdated sms technology. Marketing genius since the customers had no idea and just thought they had a better phone.
@@SmoshylifeRCS is the upgrade to SMS/MMS which Apple has been refusing to implement for their users for years and years. iMessage is just the alternative to the standard that Apple used to trap users.
@@Smoshylife never said it was superior. But it is normal texting. It is not superior to Facebook messenger, Whatsapp, signal, etc. iMessage is not texting. iMessage is a chat function/app. This is what people do not understand.
On what features should already exist in pixel phones which are simple and basic in other Android skins..and what's up with pixie ai,? any info on that?
In RCS on Android to Android sending pictures and videos by pressing the plus icon and then files sends them completely uncompressed unilike when pressing the gallery button where some compression is applied. Could you check if thats also the case on Androis to iOS?
Also do you have a Samsung phone? The RCS settings in their Messages app allows you to send photos and videos at original quality. I wonder if the iPhone actually receives it as such
unfortunately I think it's imperative that Apple changes the color for RCS bubbles. the masses are probably not even going to think anything is different unless the biggest visual factor changes
I mean iMessage doesn’t have typing indicators nor read and deliver receipts for groupchats so it makes sense that’s it’s inconsistent on rcs groupchats
@@jasonashley9853 You’re definitely right, was just saying that’s probably why they are not fully working on rcs since they are in a group chat with iPhone people
This entire thing was Apples doing to give the appearance that iOS devices were superior to Android when it simply wasnt. The pixelated pics, videos were not Android's fault but Apple's for not supporting certain technology. Now with them (apple) being forced to do so, it should bridge the communication gap between Android & iOS, but it should have never been there in the first place.
It may take them decades for their nerfed software engineering team to implement the ability to move an icon, but their social "engineering" team (codename: "Project Manipulation") is always on point
Reminder that this only happened thanks to pressure from regulatory bodies. When there's no profit incentive, major companies will never do things like this to improve the QOL for users
Is it real people still use MMS in The US? Contrary to what you read SMS isn't dead globally, it's still a useful service but MMS never even worked. I'd rather use email to send a photo.
@@HollowSentence22They sometimes do. I personally use discord when talking with my friends and use regular texting with family and family-friends. I'm even a part of a family group chat consisting of my mom, her husband, her siblings, and her sibling's significant others.

It was never about the bubble color; it's what came with the bubble color. It represented a severely limited text experience between Android and iOS users.
Let's end this narrative that this is more of a benefit for Android users than it is for iPhone users. Texting is a two-way street, this is just as much a boost iPhone users
Honestly. As the most basic use of phones is COMMUNICATION, any company like Apple, Google, Facebook, etc after reaching a certain amount of total users (like 50-100k) should be forced to make it available on all popular OS in use. So like iOS Android, Windows and MacOS. Gatekeeping in communication is the epitome of greed that Apple has shown. and will continue to show.
yes, you could not even call or text other phones with iphone, wait a minute...actually you can! you can even send videos pictures and video chat use all kinds of apps! but you choose not to
Did I spot the Google Store in San Francisco 👀 I have been there once...quite a nice place. It's perfect to grab a cup of coffee from the Google Cafe and get work done on your laptop 😂
It's a nice touch. Have noticed some of the same inconsistencies you've mentioned while messaging with my iPhone friend. Overall experience has been positive but still keeping Whatsapp as well
I just wish that Apple would reach out to Google to implement E2EE between their two clients. They say they want to add it to the standard, but I don't think that's ever going to happen as there are members in the GSMA that explicitly do not want it added to the standard. That's why they say that encryption is the responsibility of the messaging clients, which is why Google implemented it the way they did.
If RCS e2e encyption universal standard gets updated and they implement the edit, unsend, and direct reply features across platforms, we could finally put this silly topic to rest!
I don't know why Apple users are unwilling to install a free app that provides privacy and security. That's the silliness from my perspective. It's worth the storage space on your underspecified phones to be able to talk to people without worrying about limitations Apple has imposed.
Knew this was going to happen. Apple was only going to allow the bare essentials that qualify for RCS. If you want the full experience, “🗣️BUY YOUR MOM AN IPHONE” Great video 👍🏾
I am so happy that this is working. My kid is on iOS, and my wife and I are using Pixel 8 Pro. It was a nightmare when I got images and videos from both devices. When our kid upgraded to iOS 18, she checked to make sure RCS was enabled. Now we can see the images and videos much better. Question. I noticed when we like a message from iOS, it shows the emoji to text on the iOS. Today, I checked and noticed within the chat group this message. End-to-end encryption: Off Group end-to-end encryption isn't available for my kid's name. More about RCS chats. Do we have to delete the family group and start a new one?
*It's about time apple decided to upgrade to the fastest standard (RCS) messaging the pixel has been having for yrs now it's been the same messaging system for apple for them since the iPhone 3g*
This is the best review on RCs in iOS 18 beta. I have watched. You covered all the features and drawbacks well and included group messaging features! Thank you.
It's basically impossible to send even a 40 second video over rcs. And it's hit or miss if you can get a photo to go through via rcs from Android to iPhone. Have to swap to MMS to get it to go.
I'm happy that everyone is now able to enjoy RCS, but let's not forget something: Apple adopting RCS is not doing Android users a favor. It's giving iPhone users a feature that Apple has been holding out on them for several years, simply to fool their customers into thinking iPhones are the only phones that have high quality messaging, and that Android phones were all cheap. It also fooled them into thinking that android phones have terrible cameras, despite many Android phones having way better cameras than the iPhone. This wasn't a good deed on Apple's end to unify iPhone and Android users. This was Apple being forced by the EU to not screw over their own customers. Keep that straight.
The reason I've been an iPhone user is because I couldn't share high quality videos and pictures with my family and friends. Now that this change is coming soon, I'm definitely switching to Pixel
Switching to android after 10 years straight with iPhone. I’ve always loved android and this gave me the opportunity to finally switch back without getting my wife as mad about my green bubbles 😂
For existing imessage group chats, is it as simple as adding in the Android phone number? If this is attempted today IOS advises you to create a new MMS group. Thanks!
This is such great news. Ive been pressured to switch to iPhone 15 because 80% of my friends do have iPhones but no offense to iPhone users, aside from the best animations, it’s a really boring phone. I can’t wait to switch back to Android.
As of writing this comment, I can tell you that rcs has come to Canada in the first public release in iOS 18. I am on fido, have not tried it yet, but some people I do see that rcs tag.
Seems to me that given the new RCS technology, it's iMessage that seems to be "lacking" now. If Google Messages w/RCS can do all the things iMessage can do, but iMessage can't do all the things that Google Messages w/RCS can do, then which one is really lacking? But the bigger question is why can't iMessage enable E2EE? Because the don't want to have to pay Google for the Jibe version of RCS which most carriers and Android devices in the USA support. Just another example of Apple being "greedy"!
I'm glad because I work with 95% Apple users, and some sites I work at have no cell service, so it's practically a necessity for me to have an iPhone in order to be able to communicate reliably. I hate Apple's exclusivity, but having an Android phone introduces more headache into my work. I don't care about the extra features in iMessage. As long as I can send messages and pictures consistently with RCS, I'll finally be able to switch back to Android full time.
As a European that has never been to the US I don't get how people can make fun of other other people just because they are using a different phone and messaging app? Don't they know that Android users are just using third party apps like WhatsApp that have the same functionality as the i messenger, if not even more functionality? Why don't Iphone users in the US just download a third party app like the rest of the world does and the problem would be solved. I think Apple did a great job in th US making people dependent on the imessanger
Oh Americans.. why you never used WhatsApp as the rest of the world?! Waiting 15 years for receiving a video in high quality is crazy.. i can’t imagine myself sending link of the cloud of similar to share a video!
I honestly wish Google would troll Apple & make non-encrypted RCS messages green. So, for us on Android, the chats from iPhone users will also be distinguished and appear uniform across both platforms.
The year is 2024. Texting is still in the Stone Age. Nearly all other messaging apps are so far ahead of sms it’s not funny. Neither Apple or Google have made any attempt at bringing the gap between the two platforms messaging with modern capabilities. Until now. Google and Apple are pathetic. It’s not what’s best for their customers, it’s how hard can we frack the other side’s customers over. Not taking in to account that they are also fracking over their own customers. But we forget. Neither company gives a rats ars about their customers.
So Apple is begrudgingly adding RCS, but doing so in such a way that WhatsApp and Signal are both more secure and can handle higher quality files. That is next-level petty.
As far joining the RCS experience, I don't think that will be possible for us in Africa, seeing as Mark Zuckerberg has dominated the instant messaging space over here.
Interestingly, the RCS standard supports changing group chat icons just like iMessage, although it has never been implemented in Google messages. I'm very curious if this feature works between iPhone users in RCS group chats.
You must have an iPhone. We have always been able to change group names. Now with ios 18. Iphones can see the group name. You can get the beta if you would like to try it yourself.
Google is going out of it's way to compress RCS media. If you were to test with an iPhone and a Samsung device instead I've been informed there is no compression between the two. It's just Google Messages specifically. I really hope they change this before iPhone actually releases the update as it is a bad look after all the campaigning they did.
Funny that Apple doesn't capitalize on this by saying, "Hey you can switch to iPhone and still message your Android friends without things looking like a potato."
are there any limitations for people who don't keep their mobile data turned on all the time? can rcs messages still be received as sms when mobile data is off?
iMessage doesn't allow Android users to be added to a group chat among Apple users using iMessage - it would have to be started as a new text chain to 'let the Android user in'. Would RCS change that and allow Android users to be added to a group chat without starting a new chain?
I hope Apple changes their mind about keeping that green color. It has bad contrast and isn't pleasant to look at in this context. Maybe a darker green would be appropriate, still differentiating from iMessage but nicer for the eyes.
