Mission impossible. Arguably the most consistent death metal band ever. Majesty And Decay is actually my favorite. I'm certain that is a bit of a hot take.
Majesty and decay is my favorite as well. Unholy cult, Atonement, Kingdom of conspiracy and the Providence EP are the ones I go back to the most. What an incredible band!
Can you guys do a Malevolent Creation ranking? It's criminal how much these guys are overlooked. Ten commandments and retribution, in my opinion, may be the best debut and second death metal album combo of all time
Its a tie with Close to a World Below, and Majesty and Decay. Their performance at Brutal Assault sounded amazing, whomever did the engineering did a killer job.
Immolation has this grandiose, sort of sophisticated sound that's undeniably evil, but also rich and epic. They use a lot of notes from a chord I learned about in music school called the Promethean chord. You can hear it really prominently in Alexander Scriabin's Prometheus, the Poem of Fire. It's one of many things that give them their majestic sound and I just thought that was a cool little connection. People who think death metal lacks musicianship should listen to Immolation. Their music is intelligently crafted. Sick shit fellas!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! That is a great way to describe their style. It's sophisticated, grandiose and evil as hell. If ever there was a chord that as was meant for Immolation it would have to be one named that lol. Everything about this band is intensely dark and ominous but they're knack for unique melodies and inventive riff and drum patterns has always been something about them that makes them stand out and definitely showcases how talented they are. Just a flat out killer band.
@@thrallsofmetal I love these discography rankings man. They have really deepened my love and enjoyment of the material covered. And in many cases, they've exposed me to tracks and albums I missed along the way that I adore now. You guys sitting down and going through their work, talking in detail about what you like and don't like, the stories behind the records and the bands, the different perspectives and characterizations...it just enriches the entire experience for me. You guys are spreading a genuine love of this music in a way that I think is remarkable. I'm so fucking happy this channel is around and so active. My own playlists have grown like crazy from your content, I hope you guys keep doing this for as long as possible \m/
I actually like the production on Failures for Gods better than a couple of their other albums. Something about the sound just feels like perfect '90s grit to me and keeps me coming back. I'd probably rank it #5 or 6.
There's this regal, somehow majestic feel to a lot of immolation's work that sets it apart. If the coronation of King Charles 3rd took place in hell, I feel sure that immolation would have provided the soundtrack.
Necrotic Nick- Dude... that is a badass comparison, man. That is totally the vibe when it comes down to that epic, evil vibe they completely nail on most of their albums.
"Here In After" is my favorite. Just such an oppressive and miserable (in a good way) atmosphere on that record. Glad to see they brought the old logo back too starting with "Atonement". I have a faded as fuck "Unholy Cult" tout shirt with the old logo and it looks much better.
Necrotic Nick- I dig all these albums honestly which made this a pain in the ass to rank. I loved seeing that old logo come back on Atonement as well. The block letters were cool but indistinct.
These guys might be my favorite, death metal band, ridiculously hard to rank these albums as there are none that are even average. 11. Shadows in the Light 10. Harnessing Ruin 9. Kingdom of Conspiracy 8. Dawn of Possession 7. Majesty and Decay 6. Acts of God 5. Atonement 4. Failures for Gods 3. Close to a World Below 2. Unholy Cult 1. Here in After
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, their consistency is almost as legendary as their live presence. I loved listening to all this stuff again but I really hated ranking it.
lets fucking goooo , a cryptopsy ranking or obituary ranking would be sick saw immolation and obituary this year with ingrown and blood incantation was crazy af
I'm looking forward to this one. Hopefully one day they can get to Amon Amarth rankings, I know they have the next bunch already scheduled, so maybe one day.
As others have said.. really difficult to nail down which is best but I always go back to Failures for Gods, I love that muddy studio sound that feels like it was recorded in a basement.
Failures for gods is my personal favorite. Production could be better but the songs themselves are just fantastic. It's a really dark and suffocating immolation album
I heard the song Harnessing Ruin and knew I needed to get with this band. Atonement is an absolute banger! Epiphany lives rent free in my head. Head bobbing stank face ensues 🤘 Great, highly entertaining ranking and some very different placements between you guys.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, the first song I heard was No Forgiveness (Without Bloodshed) but the first album I got was Close to a World Below and it blew me away. Been a giant fan ever since. I was stoked as hell when Atonement dropped and man, that album ripped. This band just flat out rules.
One of the best discographies in Death Metal, I like all albums so it's hard to rank them, but right now this is how it goes for me: 1. Atonement 2. Acts of God 3. Majesty and Decay 4. Dawn of Possession 5. Here In After 6. Kingdom of Conspiracy 7. Close to A World Below 8. Failures for Gods 9. Shadows in the Light 10. Unholy Cult 11. Harnessing Ruin
This is a ranking I absolutely do not envy you guys for and one that I absolutely cannot take part in properly. Their discography is too god damn consistent. I'd say in terms of favourites, in no particular order, I'd go Close to a World Below, Atonement and Dawn of Possession. Those, and the latest one, are just the ones I find myself going back to the most whenever I fancy listening to Immolation. Can't wait to see how you guys managed to tackle this 🤣🤘🤘
Necrotic Nick- I dreaded it from the start lol. I love this band and legit feel they don't have a weak album so this ranking was tough as hell. I had 5 or 6 albums I was considering for the number 1 spot at one point. Close to a World Below won out though. It's too good to not be number 1.
They are one of my favorite extreme metal bands of all time, their consistency is pretty insane. 11 Shadows in the Light 10 Kingdom of Conspiracy 9 Harnessing Ruin 8 Acts of God 7 Failures for Gods 6 Majesty and Decay 5 Dawn of Possession 4 Here in After 3 Atonement 2 Unholy Cult 1 Close to a World Below
I'm already hooked with something they do during breakdowns...there's pick trilling-with dissonant notation, that last all of 1/4 to 1/2 a measure...when you're digging a breakdown, that's almost a shock...that's so different, that's so cool.
Necrotic Nick- They really have put their own stamp on death metal with their unique songwriting. A lot of that is due to Rob's wild guitar work. He has such a killer style of playing and his riff construction is practically a sonic autograph.
Great list and amazing band. My old band got to open for them in Detroit on that tour they did with Gigan and Jungle Rot, such awesome guys. All of them were such great dudes, super nice and didn’t treat us like openers. I agree with Close to a world Below being number 1, I got that first day and was so stoked for it. I would put 2 as a toss up between Here In After and Majesty In Decay, though I agree they don’t have a bad record.
Necrotic Nick- I've been anticipating doing this one for some time since I love this band so much. I saw them 3 times last year and I can't wait to see them again.
Maan I’ve been really dwelling on this ranking for weeks since this was announced. I got to see these guys in May with Obituary and they tore the house down playing some of my favorites but yeah: 1. Close to a world Below 2. Acts of God 3. Atonement 4. Unholy Cult 5. Here in After 6. Failures for Gods 7. Majesty in Decay 8. Kingdom of Conspiracy 9. Dawn of Possession 10. Shadows in the Light 11. Harnessing Ruin This band is insanely consistent no bad records I like to love all these albums it was damn near impossible picking a bottom 3 let alone a favorite. Excited to see where you guys placed these
When it comes to albums ranked, this channel is the one. I most definitely do not agree with.ost of the rankings, but I love the presentation and chemistry you guys have. Love the channel.
Enjoyable as always. I really dig these album rankings. Immolation is a great band, very difficult to rank. I own Dawn of Possession, Close to a World Below, Unholy Cult, Kingdom of Conspiracy, Atonement and Acts of God. I would say Dawn of Possession, Close to a World Below and Acts of God are my favorites. I have not heard the other albums. Looking forward to the Judas Priest ranking.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! These are a lot of fun to do but man this one was tough as hell considering how consistently awesome this band it. Honestly, just find the albums you're missing because they're all killer. Judas Priest may take awhile but it'll be a lot of fun to do. They're one of my earliest metal memories as a kid.
John McEntee did a ranking of Immolation albums a while back... you might be interested if you haven't seen it. Enjoy watching all your ranking videos! It's true, they were screwed over by R/C but they kept relevant by being road warriors. They used to play Christ Cage live before Here In After was released. Dawn is still my favorite... Atonement is up there as well!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I might have to check that one out since we've ranked both Immolation and Incantation and John's just a hell of a dude in general. Yeah, the Roadrunner purge of the 90's was pretty brutal but Immolation wasn't going to be stopped. Fucking legendary band.
Ahhhhhh Shhhheeeeeeiiiit! Here we go, I still gotta make my list! Guess I'm taking a long lunch break tomorrow with a bowl of spinnach and a brew! 'Dawn of Possession' #1 for me solid, let's see what Jammin' Jon thinks! lol
Necrotic Nick- I hope you dug it, man! This was a tough one to rank. My top 6 all could have been my number one honestly. This band is just that fuckin' good. Yeah, Jon saved his cursed number 6 for Here and After... but so did I so... lol
I've never actually listened to anything by these guys...but seeing your collective reactions to Close to a World Below...imma have to pause this here video.
My ranking 1. Here In After 2. Close To A World Below 3. Dawn Of Possession 4. Failures For Gods 5. Unholy Cult 6. Acts Of God 7. Atonement 8. Majesty And Decay 9. Harnessing Ruin 10. Kingdom Of Conspiracy 11. Shadows In The Light
Glad we agree on number 1! God tier album, that one. I think CtaWB has my favorite intro to ANY album ever. "Didn't you say...Jesus was coming?" Fucking legendary. And Alex is a monster. Rob is one of the greatest guitarists in metal.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, this one took some time to get together. I relistened to these albums so many times to figure out my ranking and man was this tough. This band just doesn't miss and they really have their own sound within death metal.
I love the details and insight you guys give. Coming to this band late may make this more difficult for me to rank. But it's also difficult because they are so consistently great.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah this was a pain in the ass to rank. The consistency of this band is insane. I had at least 5 of 6 albums that could have been my number 1 on here.
Killer stuff fellas, Immolation is one of my favs. Dawn of Possession is 2nd Death Metal album I ever owned. Immolation is one of the most consistent DM bands of all time. Great ranking. My top 3 would be Dawn Of Possession, Close To A World Below and Here In After.
Necrotic Nick-Thanks, man! Man, I should have jumped on Dawn of Possession when I was getting into Cannibal Corpse and Obituary but it flew under the radar for me. Picking up Close to a World Below got me on the path though.
@@thrallsofmetal I got lucky honestly on it, I got into death metal in 93' so I was late to the party, I went to Sam Goody back then and bought MA Blessed are the Sick and just seen the album art to Dawn of Possession and it picked up as a blind buy... the best blind buy ever!!
Great discussion and lots of nice insights here. I love Close and Atonement, but that's the only ones I have spent time with. I am now convinced to dive into Majesty!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We spent a lot of time with these records (hence why these take awhile to put together) and we wanted to get as in depth as we could. Seriously though, just dive into the entire discography. Even the weaker ones we brought up are still killer.
Hard to rank Immolation albums because all of them are so great. Maybe Dawn of Possession sounds a bit too archaic to me today but I get it, damn, it was released in 1991! All in all, Close to a World Below may be my favourite, but I also love Majesty and Decay, Unholy Cult and really each album those guys ever recorded.
Fantastic work on this video boys. I’m not super familiar with immolation having only heard two albums. This video makes me want to check out more of their back catalogue. Again great video
Love Immolation! Got to meet them in Denver 2017, they were manning their own merch booth which was set up right next to ours. Bought my merch from Ross, got to meet Bob. Very cool dudes! Atonement is one of my top fave Immo albums.
I’m not listening to Immolation and I’m generally not a Big fan of death metal…but fuck, guys I Love your rankings and I’m watching every single one from start to the end, Love it!!! ❤
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Hey, if this ranking even made you a bit curious about the band enough to check them out more then I feel like we did a solid job here. Glad you dig the video, man!
@@thrallsofmetal thanks for respond! Of course you made me curious and I checked Close to a World Below, because it was your unanimous No 1 😁 I slowly getting deeper into this stuff, thanks for inspiration, I'm really impress by your unbelievable knowledge about metal guys 🙏🙏🙏
Majesty and Decay was my favorite for a long time too, I guess that a bunch of us started listening to Immolation when that album was released. Now sits in 7th but as you said, it is just a number to put because they all are great, is amazing how they are 11 albums in and 30 years later and somehow they are still relevant. Elite band
Necrotic Nick- Elite is definitely the right word for them. This was one of the toughest rankings I think we've done yet in my opinion. Even the weaker albums are killer honestly. This band just doesn't miss.
1. Close to a World Below 2. Unholy Cult 3. Here in After 4. Dawn of Possession 5. Acts of God 6. Failures for Gods 7. Majesty and Decay 8. Atonement 9. Shadows in the Light 10. Harnessing Ruin 11. Kingdom of Conspiracy The top 4 are pretty much all #1 for me, but all the albums are good.
Nice to hear this. I haven't really thought about ranking the albums for my own amusement but, I know this: Here in After is my #1. I'm not one of those people who believes the first album you heard from a band is usually going to be your favourite; it's often not the case for me, but, it is with this band. That album just represents everything I love about them. It really sounds crazy with that "instability" mentioned here in the video...really dark and evil and twisted and like no other death metal I had heard before. I really like Close to a World below, Unholy Cult, Atonement etc, but for me, they never were quite as gloriously wild and demented as they were way back on Here in After. But, it could be that hearing it in 96/97 made a difference, too. I do like Shadows in the Light more than you guys. I think it's maybe their most atmospheric album. I think some of the leads are actually quite haunting. The tone isn't very heavy and I acknowledge that might be a problem, but it does make Rob's leads stand out more, and a lot of them are really almost psychedelic on this record. Not sure where I'd put it ni a ranking but certainly not too near the bottom for me.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, this was a pain in the ass to rank considering how consistent the band is. Close to a World Below was the first full album I heard so I hear you about the first one often ends up being the favorite. For me Close to a World delivers on everything that Immolation excels at and really combines the strongest elements of Here and After and Failures for Gods and adds some flat out hooks to it. I love all their albums though even Shadows in the Light which would still be a highly rated album. Honestly a remix of that one might help a bit. This was quite a tough one to rank as you can see.
My list would be: 11. Shadows in the light (the only one I won’t return to tbh) 10. Kingdom of conspiracy 9. Majesty in decay 8. Unholy cult 7. Failures for gods 6. Harnessing ruins (gonna be honest, as a massive melodeath fan this was kinda a surprise) 5. Atonement 4. Acts of god 3. Close to a world below 2. Here in After 1. Dawn of possession
Immolation 1. Close to a world below 2. Kingdom of conspiracy 3. Atonement 4. Unholy cult 5. Dawn of possession 6. Acts of God 7. Majesty and decay 8. Here in after 9. Shadow in the light 10. Harnessing ruins 11. Failures for God This is my ranking of immolation. This is just my opinion
For me #1 is Unholy Cult. The dissonance really appeals to me, as well as the darker sound, while "Close to a world below" has less of that, and is more of a "normal" death metal album... I discovered Unholy Cult first, so for me I had trouble understanding how people could prefer "Close to a world below". It was the first time that I heard a death metal band sound like that, and to this day no one does dissonance like Immolation and Unholy Cult is easily in my top 5 best death metal albums. It's also my favorite american death metal album, even above Death - Symbolic and Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines.
Chaps, just want to thank you. Due to your enthusiasm, checking out Close to a World Below. Great stuff. Love 'Father, You're Not A Father' and the title-track.
Necrotic Nick- Hey! That's the kinda response I love hearing, man. Close to a World Below has been a favorite of mine for years. Brutal, evil but done with great attention to hooks.
It's gonna be a LONG day of filming for that Judas Priest ranking with EIGHTEEN ALBUMS since they JUST finished recording their 19th regular studio album, but that album won't drop until EARLY NEXT YEAR!
Acts Of God is my favorite. I don't have a vinyl player and I bought it on vinyl lol. The cover is amazing. I think the song Acts of God is one of the best metal songs ever. Along with When The Jackals Come from the album before. This thing oozes evil.
Necrotic Nick- Killer album and I love all of Eliran Kantor's art. He's done so many killer album covers. Noose of Thorns still might be my favorite on that one.
I saw Immolation this past November with Cannibal Corpse in Vancouver. Immolation was supporting their latest album Acts of God. 1. Acts of God (LOVED THAT ALBUM!) 2. Dawn of Possession 3. Kingdom of Conspiracy 4. Unholy Cult 5. Close to a World Below 6. Majesty and Decay 7. Atonement (meh) 8. Here in After 9. Shadows in the Light 10. Harnessing Ruin 11. Failures for Gods (I listened to a bit of it and the drum mix on this album is NOT GOOD!)
Really enjoyed this and all of your discography rankings, really. I know these types of videos are more demanding, but they are my favourite from your channel. Hoping to see more discography rankings soon! Maybe Misery Index, Gorguts or Converge? Cheers!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeh, they definitely take the longest to get together with all the listening, note-taking and getting everyone together on the same day but they're fun to do. After Judas Priest we have The Black Dahlia Murder and Meshuggah as the next 2 so there's more on the way.
11) Harnessing Ruin 10) Failures for Gods 9) Kingdom of Conspiracy 8) Shadows in the Light 7) Acts of God 6) Unholy Cult 5) Close to the World Below 4) Atonement 3) Majesty and Decay 2) Here in After 1) Dawn of Possession
Necrotic Nick- Solid ranking. Man, that's the lowest I've seen Close to a World Below on a list in a minute but everything this band releases is killer.
Everytime thralls do a rank for thrash / death metal .its game on for me .tq for ranking for one of uniqiue band in death metal genre looking forward for deicide / malevolent creation or maybe kreator
Ok... here we go. very hard task to rank this as they literally have no bad album. 11. Dawn of Possession 10. Harrnesing Ruin 9. Shadows in the light 8. Close to a world below 7. Here in after 6. Unholy Cult 5. Failures for Gods (yes lackluster production but awesome songwriting) 4. Atonement 3. Kingdom of Conspiracy 2. Acts of God 1. Majesty and Decay
I have no idea why people equate immolation to immortal or incantation other than they are all top of the food chain metal. They all have very different sounds but all awesome
top 5 my favorite track by immolation is I feel nothing I listen to that song on repeat I swear 1. here and after 2. dawn 3. close to a world below 4. cult 5. acts of god
Could someone get shred a cheeseburger or something, he's always eating his hands in all the videos...lol but joking aside great video fellows!! Love me some Immolation!
Greatest death metal band in my eyes. Fucking incredible discography I have no idea how to rank it other than CTAWB being number 1 and shadows being last. But seriously I can pick any song at random from them and I’ll want to punch the mountains of hell.
I'd love to see a machine head ranking though saying it now burning red and supercharger deserve more love. Yeah they were different but they were machine head different and that still kicked ass
Necrotic Nick- Nice! they put on such a killer live show and Rob is so much fun to watch play. The dude is a like a death metal wizard on stage with is insane playing.
I had Shadows at number 4 and I’ve never seen anyone rank it above last. I never understood that, I thought it was a furious banger the first time I heard it! 🤘
1. Atonement 2. Close to a World Below 3. Acts of God 4. Shadows in the Light 5. Kingdom of Conspiracy 6. Majesty and Decay 7. Unholy Cult 8. Here in After 9. Dawn of Possession 10. Failures for gods 11. Harnessing Ruin Super tough ranking because I love every single song on every single album and when I’m in the mood for Immolation, I can just grab any cd off the shelf without thinking about it
Necrotic Nick- I think Shadows in the Light is a solid album but it just doesn't stand out much from the pack in their discography for me. World Agony is a flat out banger though.
I’m proud of y’all for this ranking! Y’all’s turned out pretty similar overall. Failures for Gods ranks pretty high for me (Jason) despite the production. But yeah, Close to a World Below is tops for me. Honestly, I have Acts of God at the bottom. It’s just doesn’t have a lot of standout tracks for me. And there are a lot of tracks. It feels kinda by the book. It’s still good though.
Necrotic Nick- Dude, this was a lot of fun to listen to but hell to rank. I really had to get nitpicky when it came down to stuff and Failures kinda suffered for the rough production but man, all the songs on that album rip. I had a hunch that Close would be my tops going into this one but I didn't think we'd all agree on it. I do think Acts is a bit bloated but I really dig the album. It has a bit more of their 90's flair to the songs in my opinion but honestly I love all these albums. They just flat out rule.
1. Here In After 10/10 1. Close to a World Below 10/10 3. Failures for Gods 10/10 4. Dawn of Possession 10/10 5. Harnessing Ruin 10/10 6. Majesty and Decay 10/10 7. Atonement 9/10 8. Shadows in the Light 9/10 9. Unholy Cult 8/10 10. Acts of God 7.5/10 11. Kingdom of Conspiracy 5.5/10
My rankings (before I watch): 1. Close to a world below 2. Unholy cult 3. Majesty and decay 4. Atonement 5. Here in after 6. Dawn of possession 7. Acts of god 8. Shadows in the light 9. Harnessing ruin 10. Kingdom of conspiracy 11. Failures for gods
