My friend passed away last month. He would have turned 26 tomorrow. We used to hoop at my school gym late at night, then ride around listening to this music -- Nas, Tribe, Brother Ali, Immortal Technique. He was an activist who fought for reforming the drug laws in Oakland to reverse the effects of the War on Drugs. I remixed this song in his memory. You can read more about his work below.

Interview with Vice.com, "Can America's Weed Industry Provide Reparations for the War on Drugs?" [www.vice.com/e...]
"'We need to dispose of the notion that the [racial] bias [of incarceration] was an unintended consequence of the war on drugs,' Zavell said, referencing a Nixon aide's recent revelation that the administration explicitly used drug laws to criminalize black power organizations and left-wing activists. 'We have to be equally intentional when it comes to legalization and ending prohibition.'"
Interview with 'Investing in Cannabis,' "How is Cannabis Legalization Prop 64 Going to Affect California and the US?" [ • Video ]
"I come to this work seeing the injustice of prohibition. When I first interviewed with Rob Raich, the attorney I work for, that was a lot of my focus: this policy is harming us as a society, how can we move past it. As we transition into a legalized economy, we can preserve some of the value and economic sustenance that this informal economy has provided to certain communities, so that they're not just totally excluded and there's [not] a complete hollowing out.
"Part of this phenomenon with Trump and his support in the midwest is the hollowing out of the industrial sector that we saw with NAFTA and these other globalization deals. There were severe economic traumas as a result of the economic structures created to facilitate trade in various industries, that have left whole communities behind. The middle class is shrinking rapidly. Those are trajectories in society that time and time again... Jared Diamond wrote this book called 'Collapse,' one of the things he saw in civilizations that collapse is an increasing schism between the most wealthy and everybody else. It's those extreme moments that destabilize civilizations.
"I don't want to be too grandiose, but we saw these sentiments in the Occupy movement, and we see the mirror of Occupy in the Trump contingent: people affected by the same policies, from the perspective of the 'right.' Our society is becoming polarized. There are a lot of people the economy isn't serving. Ideally, we don't see the process of legalizing cannabis as just bringing it into the broader 'business as usual' economy. It's not like we're creating a new industry. We have an industry here. This industry has problems, and regulation offers an opportunity to address those problems. But we need to preserve some of these valuable things that are unique to cannabis."
