Today I was supposed to be performing my Solo electroacoustic Cello improvisations in Paris at the society for the advancement of music(Sigh). Hide and Seek has been done to death and there are so many awful covers of it out there, but I couldn’t get the first lyrics out of my head this morning so I decided to record this little improvisation Live from my room.
Most people don’t realize the amount of practicing and experimenting it takes to go beyond imitation and really create new sounds, and then meld with your tools so that you can really play and create and be spontaneous seamlessly without thought. I feel like I’m starting to get to this point and it’s really exciting.
For this performance, I decided to limit myself to my Ableton rig and just a few pieces of hardware
Ventris Reverb by Source Audio, Boss RC20, EHX Freeze, Ventris

Jacob, you've been working effing hard on developing a language on this beautiful instrument. Not only that, you do it with passion and true desire to pass it on. You will be fully recognized someday. This work is precious, unique and will bear unvaluable fruits to many cellists. Of course, one can emulate a style into his/her instrument, but it is also necessary to go further, to "mash up" all those styles in their way of playing - and living. Thank you so much for all these videos, which inspire, give tips and encourage (I'm sure) so many people.

Hey Jacob-this is very cool! I know there's a lot of craft to making this work so well, but also a lot of heart. Best to your family. Stay safe.

Amazing! Are you using ableton for harmonization? Violinist here, been looking for a flexible software solution for this

Nice. :) I thought I put a comment here. But.... I hope to get this type of control in live looping. :)

I was JUST listening to that song yesterday to hear the meme song origin, awesome! What if you used the cello to harmonize on top of an actual voice for the main melody? That might make something sound cooler than autotuning.

OK so there are moments when I'm using a hard tuning effect in a split channel to get that glitchy sound on purpose, but I'm also in a parallell channel running a harmonizer with custom midi programming to control the voicing and chord choice for each chord. Sometimes I'm bypassing both. Hope that helps.

@@jacobszekely Sorry if I wasn’t coherent, but I literally meant singing WHILE playing the cello. There’s people on the web that have done that, and I’ve been self training my own voice for a long time now, partially by trying to match the timbre of my own cello. I figured when I commented that that you’d understand that I meant that and not the circuitry (don’t worry, I understood that part well! I got my own electric cello too!) I’ve taken a deep listening study into baroque music lately and that’s gotten into my head too of using the cello as a pedal instrument (basso continuo) to singing above it. Also in mind is the arpeggiating style in the guitar work of some old school musicians like Gordon Lightfoot and The Beatles. If cellists can’t bow 4 notes at once it makes more sense then to divide them into 2 notes at a time, if not seemingly simple, then from CG to GD to DA then back again.
