I never get tired of hearing that old 720 startup I was just using my 730 yesterday doing some square baling for a neighbor who has horses ,just something magic about the sound that old beast makes
Inpatients of youth, been there done that. Was trying to fix a bent stabilizer bar, got made and had a Tim moment started cussing and throwing tools.my dad came out told me to knock off for the day that dinner was ready,to get after it in the morning when I had calmed down and rested. Got up early the next day, walked out to garage, my dad was was headed in to house, said he fixed the stabilizer.thank you dad. Sure miss not having him around.
Tim, I done the same thing but with a John Deere 346 square baler, wire tie. I was 19 at the time and we were baling Bermuda grass hay. Baler missed a bale, then another and another until I finally sheared the bolt in the twister shaft. Twister was catching the wire due to wear of course but me being a young man and in a hurry, I thought it would fix itself. Needless to say, my Dad was pissed and I learned an important life lesson. I'm 42 now, still learning but it's a bit easier now. Keep at it buddy. If your not making mistakes it cause your not doing anything.
There is also ''Impatience of the Farmer''...My friend farmer was baling hay one afternoon and there was a thunderstorm coming in on the horizon...So he got baling in high gear! A knotter like yours broke while he was baling the last row of hay...Result:about 30 loose bales in the wagon! What i did was unload the good bales in the barn and give the loose hay to the cows in the pasture!
When I was young, I did that once... just once. Lesson learned the hard way. Took a few hrs to fix though and back to bailing. I've always enjoyed the ol' two lungers working, need to get mine back up an running again. Cheers :)
yea I see your farms like mine my boys do that stuff to and then dad comes to the rescue but that's what dads do I wouldn't have any other way though .Suer is nice to be able to have three generations working together .We only have 2 generations now since my dad has gone on now and we sure miss him but moving on like he would want us to do .I really enjoy your videos lot of good stuff there be safe get your hay made I think rains coming our way the weekend .thanks for the videos . ROLL ON FARMINGS GREAT
Thanks for the tip on different bill hooks for twine types. Also, noticed the Lock n Lube on your grease gun. One of my Wife's best Christmas presents Love mine!!
It would be nice to see the old girl out in the field making some bales. It is nice to see you and your son having a bit of fun too! Hay isn't turning out great up north here, too much rain and not enough heat...hard to make hay in a mud puddle! Hope the weather straightens out soon, a lot of hay down and more rain forecast for today. :(
Wes, you have the patients of Job. Good to see a family farm work like yours does. Everyone doing their part and nobody shooting each other. Lol. I did quite a bit of square baling with an old Ford 562. I detested that thing. I would get sick to my stomach when I knew I had to run that cantankerous contraption. It didn't like to tie and was notorious for breaking needles.
I envy your bail thrower, all the hay I did as a kid was had stacked on wagons, or when we ran out of empty wagons we balled it on the ground to pick up latter. Just realized I'm still kinda bitter about those days:)
Hey, I just got that baler! Just without the hydraulics and wire tie. And hay conveyer. Haven't run it, yet. Good to know a 720 can push it. I was worried when I saw a website that claimed it needed 67HP, and my Case 1390 is only 60HP PTO. I was skeptical that a small square baler would need that much. I like that grease gun!
Dang, I would have loved to see a slowed down step-by-step explanation on that arm replacement. I had the local JD guys replace one for me last winter, to the tune of over $850, and they made one free field adjustment earlier this year, but now that knotter is giving me issues that I'm trying to fix myself because I cannot afford to have them work on it any more. It's downright aggravating when it misses 1 out of every 7-10 knots.
I used to have an old (1954) Massey Harris baler with a TVO engine on it. That was an absolute bastard with the knotters, if the tenssion was not right or the knives were not sharp enough the knots came undone or were not tied.
best you tuber ever good work wes, tim makes me laugh hes a good worker, the videos are better when tims in the video. how did your other half get on chucking grass out
Gierok farms was having trouble with the knotter on thier baler and asked viewers for advice, i mentioned you because you seem to know your shit when it comes to these things. nice vids
Hey Wes, I know you sell your hay to mushroom farmers but I'm just curious, what do they do with the hay afterwards. Do they make mulch or something? I know you gave us a tour sort of showing how they grow their mushrooms, but I don't remember you saying what they do with the spent hay. Just curious. Good video, shows how sometimes you can be working and just kind of forget what you are doing and mess up. Everybody does it some time or other, no big deal, but sometimes it can be quite expensive. Keep up the good work and I'll keep watchin'.
What is your brand preference for square baler twine Wes? We have used Titan in the past but started to have some trouble with consistency. Same with Orangeline from TSC. The name brand new holland stuff is decent but cashy!
Reggy_ S it because with the john deere dealers around the whole US when it comes to john deere parts work together and send parts that are needed to other dealers near by that why the local dealer probably had just sent there's off and have gotten a new one for the self yet.
Thanks for the explanation Sam... I suppose it must be efficient for John Deere but it sounds disastrous for a busy farmer or contractor fighting the weather. Thinking about it though they probably want farmers to buy in advance and stock their own spares instead of the dealer having to do it.
Do you make Tim wear hearing protection when using the older tractors without cabs especially since you are loosing your hearing-just hope all the young ones learn from all us old deaf farmers.
Otto Seeger n the topic of hearing protection, I have found custom fit ear plugs to be the best.. I wear all day at work a pair of DB blockers , they are like $120 a pair. After having them I can't stand the disposable ones anymore.
Completely random question.....how tall is Tim? I read in comment a while back that he was 6'4" but he doesn't seem that tall. Ya the exuberance of youth, glad you were able to fix it.
Boy that little pony engine is a real screamer! Square balers can be a real pain sometimes even when you understand the mechanism and how to troubleshoot them.Never could get use to that darn lunging of the baler. Like riding a bucking horse. Can you give us a shot of it running?
Yep, things never end well with knotters if you don't get off and see what's going one. Finding a good baler mechanic is tricky in my area when you need one. Most guys are just grain farmer anymore so most shop don't have a guy that specializes in balers.
ih1206 that's a shame. TBH they aren't super complicated machines, you do need a service manual for them them if you're working on one. Yeah there are a lot of moving pieces but ultimately it's all about setting gaps, timing, and tension. You get those three items right it's gonna tie knots all day long and not give you a lick of problems.
jayss10 Yeah is a shame, but most shops just don't deal in hay equipment anymore. Fortunately, we are usually pretty good about getting things set as the book says. That usually solves 99% of the problems. The trick is with that 1%.
field wax I love it but don't go to hard on tim he seems to be a good kid in training I think he will work out as long as he can keep his mind off the snatchsquatches just kidding tim is a good kid keep up the great videos be safe thanks.
Must be having an early day today Wes. Cheers mate. If you get a spare 10 min some time check out sugar cane harvesting in Austalia by Luckie22 older vids but you get the idea
love the 720d. if i had a problem with the 520 i could ask gramps about it and he could shed some light for me. it used to be his ol girl then dad bought it. now the ol girls mine and im the only one still alive that has owned the 520. rip dad and gramps. oh and co2 kills that how the 520 killed my dad
onelonleyfarmer it sucked i was in west virginia driving truck. my family came out and got me since im from michigan and i left the truck for a week and a half. it sucks getting a call like that. when i just spoke to him within a week prior and everything was fine
asbornbros Yeah I know i was just wondering why he chose new holland for small squares, i like Deeres feed auger design it seems to feed more evenly to me
that's not why he has 1 new holland he use to be all new holland for hay related stuff until the no rower and new holland big square gave him a bad taste in his mouth bought small square long before his bad taste for new holland!
For a number of years New Holland WAS the go to for hay equipment end of story. Not sure how their newer small bale equipment is but their older stuff was and unless abused is still rock solid. My dad still runs the New Holland 275 that we used to put 20,000 a year through for the dairy when I was a kid. Still does all his mowing with a 488 haybine too.
How lax are your safety laws that still allow tractors to be used on farms without safety roll over frames? The Brit pound is down a bit at the moment, you might find Tim a classic John Deere 6400 (or 6330 etc) to use with the NH baler.
Wes I need your help! I was baling with my old NH 68, it rained I was impatient and jammed up the bale chamber. after digging it out I had to pull the string out of the knotter and thought I knew how to put it back but I'm missing 2 bales to everyone that ties, I mean WTF? very frustrated and rain on the way I just rolled it up to get it out of the field. can you post a video on how to run the string in the knotters please? I need to get the old girl baling again. thanks!
Ben Bryan it nothing big just thread the needles and tie the string to the frame some lace and cycle the knotter. Done !! Just remember to put the string through the guides oner the needle
I Agree. .You have one bale not tie STOP ! ! see whats wrong ! Got a 570 NH in 1997 (I think) 14000 a year 2nd crop hay+1000 straw every since . start again in 2 weeks.NEED TO BEEF UP wagon hitch under thrower if u have hills! ! ! IT BROKE OFF in 98 my 9x16 thrower box (NEW) ended up in the pond ! ! !
the joys of how things appear. More than likely all Wes had to deal with was the hiss of the liquid as it was sprayed past his ear. Good joke on us Wes. Fun humor
photosbychristensen eh, super simple fix TBH and those bill hook assemblies are the same on just about every New Holland baler. Most farmers have 2-3 spares just laying around from parts machines etc.
