Political geography as a systematic branch of human geography has a long, but not always distinguished his- tory. Like other branches of the discipline a precise definition is elusive with the nature of political geography, the issues explored, the approaches adopted, and the methods utilized displaying considerable breadth and variety. The nature of the sub discipline has changed over time and its fortunes have waxed and waned for a variety of reasons.
