n this Video, Bruna, Occupational Therapist explains a bit about Occupational Therapy. With it works the work and the application of occupational therapy in people with Altar Spectrum.
Regarding child development, Occupational Therapy considers:
. How does the child play?
. Does she have a hard time playing?
. What emotions does she feel while playing?
Occupational therapists work in a variety of places such as clinics and rehabilitation centers, general hospitals (in outpatient clinics, nursing homes or in units and intensive care centers), maternity homes, day care centers, special schools, regular schools, nursing homes, mental health centers, official or non-governmental social organizations and projects, companies, institutions of higher education.
The treatment of autism will depend on the severity of the social, language and behavioral deficit that the individual is in.
In young children, treatment priority is usually speech development, social / language interaction, and family support, as with adolescents, treatment is aimed at developing the social skills necessary for good coping, therapy for developing a healthy sexuality, and with adults, the focus is on the development of autonomy, teaching rules for a good social coexistence and maintenance of learned skills.
the treatment has 4 objectives:
- Stimulate social and communicative development;
- Improve learning and problem-solving skills;
- Reduce behaviors that interfere with learning and access to opportunities for everyday experiences; and
- Guide families to deal with autism.
Appropriate interventions initiated early can cause some individuals to improve in such a way that the autistic traits are imperceptible for those who did not know the developmental trajectory of these individuals. Early diagnosis of autism allows for early indication of treatment. Appropriate treatment should take into account the comorbidities (disorders associated with each case) to perform appropriate care depending on the particular characteristics of the individual for examples of comorbidities: Obsessive-compulsive disorder and learning problems.
Therapy presupposes a multidisciplinary and multidisciplinary team - medical treatment (pediatrics and psychiatry) and rehabilitation treatment (psychology, speech therapy, pedagogy and Occupational Therapy), professionalizing and social inclusion, since appropriate intervention results in a considerable improvement in the prognosis.
The success of the treatment depends not only on the commitment and qualification of the professionals who are dedicated to the care of these individuals, but also on the stimuli made by the caregivers in the family environment. The more caregivers know about autistic treatment, the better for overall development.
Finally, an extremely important objective of Occupational Therapy is to guide families, as well as teachers and other professionals who need help to understand and deal with children with autism, so that they can develop and interact in the environments they attend and with the people with whom he lives.
