Hello!
Jan From Frez Productions 2 stroke here!
Decided to make this movie after all the weird questions I see on different forums about piston lubrication holes. Looks like some might need a bit more information about the subject.
In this video I go through most of the questions and in the end I show how to drill your own lubrication holes. This video does not relate only to the CR250s and dirt bikes. This video is for all 2 strokes. Dirt bikes, motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATV`s and more!
Drilling lubrication holes is very important if you are using forged piston`s and exhaust bridge`s
I hope you learn something from this video and please share it if you know someone who needs to see this.
All best

Hello Nice Video That was great information, I used to Race a Kawasaki 750cc 3 cylinder and I wish I had that info back in the 70's It would have saved me some trouble then. That exactly is what happened to my Bike then, It was the center cylinder (It always ran hotter than the other 2) that one had that problem, I used Weisco Forged Alum, Pistons, What I did to remedy that problem was to use an indexing tool to mark out a series of drill points all the way around the piston about .500' apart (I cant remember exactly but just do the math for the pattern) and .500 lower stagger the indexing marks to land in between the first row and continue stepping the marks all the way down on the piston, (I had a friend with a machine shop , that made it easier) When that was done I used a .250 Drill and started the first pocket but drilled only to the depth of the angle on the tip of the drill, I set the depth on the Drill Press so the rest would be the same, and followed every mark at that depth all the way to the bottom of the piston, Not only were the pistons beautiful when finished but they balanced out almost perfectly and all Cylinders ran cooler (Compression was not effected, Slight increase in RPM's And it would get to maximum RPM's faster. The end result was a lighter piston with less friction and more lubrication on the Cylinder walls with less friction, That worked well for me, Never had a problem after that, I Hope you can use this to your advantage. Oh and they really are beautiful when finished. Be Well my friend, I like your way of presenting your video , That's why I am sharing this with you, I'm old now and don't want to go to my grave without sharing my trade secrets to anyone! Hope you liked it ! Ron Nadeau

wow thanks for info. ive cracked 2 cylinders right where you showed it cracked and never have known to do this til my friend told me the other day to drill holes and then i came across this vid. i have same bike 03 cr250 and just bought new cylinder and wiesco piston and am looking forward to having a reliable machine.

For everyone wondering, drilling theses lubrication holes will not effect your compression as the holes are drilled after the piston rings. Basically the intent is to cool down your Exhaust bridge meaning that you wont have as much wear on your piston and over all you'll have less issues in the future. Great video!

surely if it was such a big problem,then they will make pistons with the holes already drilled out,never been a problem with me and my bikes.thank you.

They make aluminium pistons already drilled out....Wiseco does not but they come with a instruction on how to do it yourself. Thank you..

G'day do you think this would work on a chainsaw piston? given that a chainsaw is flat out all the time when working hard, I have found a lot of cooked saws that this might of fixed so I will try it out. Great video out of the box for thinking cheers Kevin
@llecki
@llecki 7 лет назад
MrHangerone It will only work if the cylinder has an exhaust bridge. If there isn't one already then the piston is not needed to be drilled. I hope this help?

My piston is cast and is perfectly fine with 4 drilled holes like the ones you showed.
@mattiasandersson3444
@mattiasandersson3444 7 лет назад
Cast pistons does not expand that much as a forged piston and therefore they need no holes. It´s the same procedure when you building a Engine. If you use cast pistons you need very Little clearence ´between the piston and the cylinder wall. but if you use forged pistons you need much more clearence between the piston and the cylinder wall becouse forged things expand much much more when they got warm then cast ones.
@cristianr3712
@cristianr3712 7 лет назад
Got it, just wanted to point that having a cast one with a couple holes is doable, the autor was saying otherwise.

@statices8185
@statices8185 5 лет назад
Noah Kruetzkamp is it a Forged piston if so it is recommended to drill the holes for lubrication so you don’t have a premature piston failure But you don’t need to

Im not sure but i think so. I see the CR500 guys drill 3 holes in the forged pistons. Take off the exhaust chamber and take look. I think CR500 uses the bridge design.

Why do they use exhaust bridges?
@ryoneer
@ryoneer 6 лет назад
Arne Eide So the exhaust port can be wider. If you'd have the same port without the bridge, the piston ring would bulge to much into the exhaust port. This would increase wear alot, or worse break the pistonring if it would catch on the port.

All the years ive been riding cr250's ive NEVER had to drill any holes in the piston. There is no need to do this, as long as you maintain your bike properley and always warm your bike properley and use the correct oil/fuel mix you never ever need to do this.
@rigguyjt
@rigguyjt 5 лет назад
If the directions that come with your piston says to drill holes, you should drill holes. I don't believe they would waste ink or time saying it otherwise.
@jangho9
@jangho9 4 года назад
Then you might only run cast or original pistons? You dont need to drill those. If you use Wiseco or aluminium pistons, its a very good idea to drill holes or you might crack the exhaust bridge in the cylinder. Then your cylinder is waste.

Soo why does not the manufacturer off pistons and maybe the whole Engine,drill this holes if there are so necesery ?? Hard to belive that it is a costthing when the only thing you need is a drillbit and a drillmachine and woluld cost a bout 20 dollar extra in workpayment to according to you save a lot of Engines from seize.
@kingmatthews5436
@kingmatthews5436 7 лет назад
Why don't pistons just come with it
@jangho9
@jangho9 7 лет назад
Because the same pistons can be used on different engines. Some engines have exhaust bridges and some do not. Thats why Weiseco for example leaves the drilling to the customer. When you buy Wiseco pistons, you will get a instruction paper where they show you how to drill the holes and somethimes Wieseco pistons comes pre-drilled but that has never happened to me. I have always drilled holes in the wiseco pistons. I think Wossner comes pre-drilled too but not 100% sure. Thanks. Jan :)

Keep the piston lubricated? Just take the spark plug off, and pour 2 stroke oil down the piston and cylinder, that also helps keep it lubricated and last longer

I think you should of explained in the beginning , that this only applies to forged pistons. What a waste of time listening so far in only to find out it doesn’t apply to my bike.
@kingboymachine7329
@kingboymachine7329 Месяц назад
who said it's only for forged pistons? All cylinders that have a bridge on the exhaust port need to make a hole like this because the bridge is very hot. It has nothing to do with the piston material. It is made to provide lubrication in a very hot area. I have already lost 2 cylinder blocks because the bridge is broke due to overheating.but after making the hole in the piston, my motor continues to be okay until today. I'm using cast piston
