Just wanted to mention Walmart has a bike rack with a 200lb capacity, Sub $150 currently. It's not the greatest rack, but it securely held my magicycle cruiser and another heavy cruiser for many many miles. So far so good with mine! Great video Russ thanks!!

I’m a senior and just ordered a Magicycle cruiser step through. I hope it ships next week. I ordered a C9 gel seat from Amazon and the Magicycle mirrors. I watched most of your videos Russ, and made my choice after watching your videos and other senior eBike RU-vid channels. Thanks for all your help.

I like my C9 seat, but be prepared to do a bit of "making it work" to get it to fit on the stock post. I squeezed the wires together under the seat with channelocks as I locked down the allen bolt. It'll do, but it's not a perfect fit.

Hi Russ, Really enjoying your channel. Some folks have commented on the level of your E bike understanding. This is my very rough and basic understanding of the current e-bike market demographic of buyers: High end e-bike consumers who are partial to 4K-18K mid motor bikes made by brands like Riese & Muller, Stromer, Gazelle, Specialized, Trek, & Giant and other high end branded manufacturers. Then there are the D2C(Direct to Consumer) bikes $500-$3900K like KBO, Aventon, RAD, etc. Finally, you have the custom builds with prices ranging all over the place depending on how custom and fancy you want your build. You can have a custom bike built with a top speed of 40+mph and plug and play motors and BMS boards as well as custom chain rings and even automatic transmissions. Your channel for the most part hits that D2C market, which is huge. It seems the "high end" buyers enjoy lighter weight, higher quality components, frame alloys/welds and the pride of "prestige" ownership. They don't really care about replacing $1,000+ batteries and BMC's because most likely they can afford it. Custom buyers remind me of old desktop computer builders who want what they want, at a cost / benefit ratio that makes them happy and a feeling of having a unique "one-off" bike. The vast majority of e-bike consumers I suspect are casual recreational users who don't want to spend more than 2K for an E-bike. This is the sweet spot for your channel and why the information you share is important for folks who walk into a Walmart or Costco to peruse an E-bike. Buying an e-bike can be a gamble, since quality control for ALL e-bikes irregardless of price can be challenging and frustrating. Some companies are great with support when the electronics fizzle, but some never answer their phone or email. However, E-bikes are a blast to ride and allow novice riders to explore venues they would never have thought about visiting. Good content, keep it real!
@RussIsRight
@RussIsRight 2 года назад
I think you have pretty much summed it up correctly. Some people are way into it, others not so much, others just want a basic bike to ride. There's no doubt that the mainstream consumers are going to look in the $1500 range (a little lower, a little higher) and the manufacturers cater to that a lot. Many of the reviews here on RU-vid are in these ranges, right? That has to tell you that the manufacturers know that this is the sweet spot. I never claimed to know all about ebikes, but I probably know a bit more than the average person. It's a learning process for all of us it seems. Thanks for your comment.

Love my folding ebike. I’m not in your target demo, one thing about my bike being a step over that it is difficult sometimes is when I have my son on a jump seat on the rear cargo rack. Gotta be careful not to hit him stepping over. I’m not an appearance person, lots of peoples problems with transport would be solved if they’d just get a minivan, which was my choice even before kids. It’s very nice to have tons of interior storage space without sacrificing much on fuel economy. I went with folding more for storing at my home than transport, I live in an old, garageless house, so it’s nice to be able to fold down, remove the battery and put it on a shelf in the shed.

Some comments: 1. Folding bikes (at least of the lightweight kind) typically do not have an suspension. It can be retrofitted of course. Also folders tend to have more exposed wiring which is more prone to fraying. 2. Hydraulic brakes, AFAIK, don't allow you to flip the bike to work on it like you might be used to on a pedal bike. Since I don't own a bike with hydraulic brakes I cannot speak from experience but AFAIK you need one of those seat-post-clamping bike stands to do anything to your bike (which you should be doing daily or at least more than weekly). 3. Torque is read as Nm (newtom meters) and is not necessarily related to watts. A relatively low wattage motor can have more newtons of torque than a higher wattage motor. For hill climbing I would look to the newtons instead of watts of a motor.

Russ I never knew Ebikes existed until recently I started seeing them in the RV Parks. I'm 63 and have difficulties with regular bikes so I thought I would try one. Had no idea what to buy but saw your videos and a few other tubers and ended up ordering the one you are riding the magicycle cruiser step thru. I ordered the step thru because I want to share it with my wife and daughter and I think they will be able to get on it better. I am sure I will be ordering a few more in the future. I didn't see the step thru as a girls bike. Paint it pink and put some frilly stuff on the handlebars and then maybe so. MC says will ship in early July. We'll see. I am 70 miles away from an official bike path so I will be riding down some semi abandoned country roads in the Stennis space center buffer zone in south Mississippi with hardly any traffic. Enjoy your videos and comment.

Hi Russ. Great video (as always). I just wanted to chime in about service. You said that local bike shops (LBS) usually don't repair mail order bikes. Some may repair standard components (like derailleurs, truing wheels, brakes, etc) since these are fairly common components and replacement parts are available. When it comes to the electronics of the bike (display, controller, battery, etc) most LBS won't repair those because they can't get parts. In addition, many LBS (like many other businesses) are having a hard time finding people to work and some only have enough capacity to take care of their customers. This is why I decided to buy from an LBS. I've always owned Trek bikes in the past because service is important to me. It's one more factor people have to take into consideration when deciding what brand to buy.

Me too Armand. I have a Trek Rail and Trek Allant, as I do not wish to be stuck troubleshooting these bikes. But wow they are a lot more expen$ive than what Russ has, so I can't blame anyone for going to the less $ 'Hub' bikes, plus they have a cool throttle which is good for some folks. I guess those are two more choices one has to consider.

Also consider the weight,my Jetson Bolt Pro (refurbished)came two weeks ago. I'm 5"2 female and 120 pounds (55 years old),I wanted something not too expensive I case I decide just to get a regular bike. It's a bit heavy if you live in a house and have to take it up and down stairs to get it out of the garage (can't leave items like this in front of your garage...eye candy for thieves). So,after that test ride for about 45 minutes. I took the battery out...much lighter and I don't mind peddling use to ride my 12 speed when I was in high school all over the place. I ordered a racing seat because this seat is very uncomfortable,also going to replace the plastic peddles with light metal ones in a few weeks. Too hot and humid to be riding now so looking at September (Fall and cooler weather).

I wouldn't usually nitpick in comments like this anymore, but I'm compelled. There is a significant difference between riding on a street/road/highway etc, versus a bike/foot/dog path like this. One requires and asks that people maintain speeds and are relative to the others around them, so as to keep a flow that is less disrupted. One a pathway like this there is no real flow being required. On the other, there are all kinds of vehicles, but they generally keep similar speeds, besides for aggressive drivers I guess. So on the pathway, there speed limit is a literal limit, not a request to maintain that speed, in part because there are all sorts of variables. If it was the same for speed limit, everyone would have to maintain that flow and the speed limit would double as the requested maintained speed. :) all with love ofc :)

I am very fortunate that the bicycle shops in my area sell their e bikes at the same price as you can get them online. The advantage that I have with my purchase is that I get lifetime maintenance through this shop for as long as I own the bike. (This shop does this with all their bikes, not just e bikes.) Biking is becoming a major hobby and the different shops are being very competitive. Also, the shop I bought my bike gave me 30 days to ride the bike. If I didn't like the bike, I could take it back and trade for another bike. I only bring all of this up because as biking becomes more popular in your area, hopefully the bike shops will become more competitive.

Hi, Russ: just wanted to add my 2 cents, re: step over and step through bikes. I'm a senior and that step over frame, which used to be called a "boy's bike" didn't seem to make sense, because that bar would be more "hurtful" to a boy's anatomy than to a girl's acoutrements. Thing is, my boyfriend who worked at a bike shop, back in the 70s, called this bar a "MIXTE" (pronounced: MIX-tee). He was not born before 1950, so he didn't know why this mixte was important. In days of yore, a gentleman courting a lady love, before the Model T Ford car was in existence, was a vehicle for a nice, tame, calm ride around the neighborhood, with maybe a picnic at a break. The lady would SIT on this mixte bar. It was not pleasurable for a lady to sit behind her date, straddling her legs. Just like in the old days where the female horse rider would sit side saddle.. I don't know the history of female horsemanship, but for the mixte and the date sitting on them, that was the reason for that bar, and for calling it a "boy's bike".

Be interesting to know if the people calling you out for speeding on a bike path follow similar rules when driving a car, i.e. they don't exceed the maximum posted speed limits. My pet peeves when bike riding are dog owners that either don't have the dog on a leash and they're supposed to or they have the leash extended so far it's a tripwire.

Hi Russ - I'm wondering if you can address some adjusted riding styles for a heavier bike. I used to ride motorcycles, and learned early on that you applied the rear brake first during a fast stop, to avoid rotating over the handlebars if you clamped down on the front brake only. The weight of your ebikes and the speeds they are capable of might put an ebike rider in the same situation, especially downhill. On another note, as these vehicles can weigh as much as (maybe more than?) 70 pounds, should older riders consider simpler (and thus hopefully lighter) ebikes in the event that they run out of battery power and have to pedal home on legs alone? I am 70 and still ride a non-electric comfort bike a few thousand miles per year, but expect I will be looking for an ebike in the next several years so I can continue riding the local trails.
@RussIsRight
@RussIsRight 2 года назад
This is a good topic. I will try to cover it on a future video (I'm about a week ahead of when you guys see it though. But to answer your question here, yes, I tend to be sure the rear brake "feathers" the stop and then apply the front to finalize the stop. I feel the front has more ability to stop but if you hit it hard, you could go flying over the handlebar. As for the weight of the bikes, it is hard for many to deal with and as we get older, it seems even harder. But I tend to like the weight of the bikes right now as I ride faster. Not sure I'd feel as confident riding fast on a lighter weight bike. But if the battery were to die, yes, it would be really hard getting home by having to pedal it all the way back. I always feel you need your phone with you to call for someone to pick you up if that were to happen.

I think I like the CAB Motorworks Recon. I'm not interested in exercise.. It has pedals and can just about replace a 250 cc motorcycle for 6 hours of joy riding.👍 you can lay an e bike down in the bed of a truck.. Get a ramp to drive it up into the bed or put it in a van. And yes.. 150 to 180 lbs you can easily put on a rack carrier for a dirt bike .. Since most dirt bikes weigh over 200 lbs. Most all cars you can get some rack welded or mounted on the rear to carry a 150 to 200 lb bike or scooter. Built in ramp also. Couple 2X 6 wood planks to walk a bike up into a van or truck bed.

The vehicle speed limit is 15mph on the road at the local park I ride. It is predominately hilly there. Heck, I "break the law" everytime I coast (no pedaling/no throttle) down a couple of the hills. I normally hit 19-21mph coasting down those hills, and that includes feathering the brakes some. 20mph would be a better posted speed limit.

Russ, hate to disagree with you, but if you go to Walmart and take a look at the bike section, there are definitely bikes designed for boys and girls. I would consider the current ebike designs of step-thru and step-over as hybrids possibly. I bought the RadExpand5 for my 15yo grandson, and when we rec'd the RE5 I asked if he thought it looked like a girls bike. He said no it didn't. He said it reminded him of how mopeds look. Now, I have the RadRover5 step-over, and I bought it instead of the step-thru version because I personally wanted a "boys" bike. I'm pushing 69yo, so things could change in the future if I'm no longer able to get my leg over that step-over bar. Just my Saturday morning two cents worth. 😎👍

Those who want a larger 26" x 4" fat tire bike will want the Cruiser Pro, but anyone who wants a true step thru and maybe also who might not be as tall will want the Oscelot Pro. I will be getting a review sample in time when they are finally able to ship in the USA. I've heard that Canada may be getting theirs before the USA. Canada has a bit more restrictions there for motor wattages than the USA though.

if anyone comments about your speed, lets take a fine tooth comb thru what they do, better not be breaking any laws if you care about his speed so much.

how many miles was your ride for the video. I find your videos very helpful getting my 3rd new ebike in the last two months but finally discovering what's going to work for me 😊

Oh, a subject, how much are ebikes put together when you get an ebike through the mail? We have both, a bike from online and one I bought at a bike shop. My husband was able to put the online bike together. I think putting on the fenders and rack was the hardest part! I enjoyed this video. I learned a lot. (About mid drive vs hub motors) Thanks.

It seems the bikes just require you to install the front wheel, adjust the front brake, install the handlebar, pedals, display screen, fenders and rear rack, saddle and seat post and battery.
@retnav92

Hi Russ - Do you have an opinion regarding noseless bike seats vs. the traditional style?
@RussIsRight
@RussIsRight 2 года назад
I never tried a noiseless saddle,but my Bikeroo saddle has a shorter nose. I think I would miss a nose on the saddle. I think it would make me feel like I could slip forward too easily. That’s just a guess though.

Thanks Russ. Is it feasible to remove the front wheel on a bike like you are riding and get it into the back of my Chevrolet Equinox. We travel full time in a Motorhome tow an Equinox and I want to keep it out of the weather. I want to avoid a rack and would prefer a non-folding bike.
@RussIsRight

Hard to say since I don’t have your car. Maybe someone else will chime in here to help. But you can take the front wheel off with the quick release.

The original design for a “girls” bike was meant for long dresses or skirts. The high bar pulls a dress or skirt making difficult and uncomfortable to ride. So for someone that may occasionally wear dresses or skirts (usually girls) the step through is the way to go.

I love your very informative videos, Russ, because I am 69 years old and weigh 350 lbs. I want to buy the Lectric XP Step Thru 3.0 bike because it's smaller in size. I'm worried that if I fall, I could break my hip or something worse. Do you think, Russ, I should just say forget it and just walk? I'm worried because of my weight and age. What do you think?
@RussIsRight
@RussIsRight Год назад
Well, I honestly can't say yes or no in this case because if I say yes and you get hurt, I wouldn't want that. On the other hand, if I say no and you are able to do it, then I've stopped you from enjoying biking. So, I'm going to say, you must know yourself and your abilities and decide for yourself. Just know that falling is in fact something that could happen and most likely will happen sometime during your time with ebikes. My most recent video of today talks about falling issues. Many people have commented on it too. You might want to read the comments on today's video. Also, your weight exceeds the 330 lb recommended weight limit of the XP 3.0. So, that's something also to consider. There are some bikes that allow up to 400 lbs, but remember that these bikes are heavier too and more costly. My Himiway Zebra will handle up to 400 lbs, but it's a very heavy bike that makes it harder to ride at times. Good luck with your decision. You need to do what you feel is best for you.

Where do you look for places to repair E-Bike? Do normal bike shops repair E-Bikes?

Some do, many do not if they don’t sell the bike to you. Try REI. They repair bikes they do not sell.

Hey Russ can you show your front basket in a video just so I can see what you have as a liner, is that the one from RadRover?
@RussIsRight
@RussIsRight 2 года назад
No liner. Both the Rad and Magicycle baskets have bamboo wooden bottoms that the metal holds. While these two baskets look the same they don’t fit the other brand’s bike frame. Look on either brand’s website and you’ll see the bottoms.

Ok now the reason the step threw bike was called a girl's bike because girl's use to wear dresses or skirts. And couldn't swing their leg over the seat. Now most girl's don't wear dresses unless they are Amish, and if you check the Amish girls do ride stop threw bikes.

You ride too fast on the shared trails / path as looking at the people you encounter have a negative expression in body language or facial expression.

How are you able to see people’s expressions when I am “going too fast”? I must be passing so quickly that it would be hard to see expressions. Besides, I often see people who wave hi to me and smile and say good morning.

His speed is fine for a shared trail, as they are designed for 18mph. Most of the time he was around 15mph. You don't think a guy riding by, appearing to be "talking to himself" would get the looks?
