The process of smoke ignition occurs when a hot flame or ember comes into contact with a cloud of smoke. This new flame can then travel across the smoke cloud, igniting any other fuel particles it encounters.
To understand how a flame can travel across smoke to relight a candle, it's helpful to think of smoke as a fuel source.
