I love how Nels solos on this performance. Specifically how tasteful it is. He doesn't jump too deep into the ideas at first, he feeds you hints as to what will come. Honestly one of the hardest parts of soloing is staying tasteful, and he's got it down to a t.
Watching him go to work tonight at Moon River Festival was jaw dropping. He tracked a whole song on a loop pedal in his spare time while they played Jesus, etc.. They then switched up to that rythym and it took off from there. Some of the most intense musicianship I've ever seen and front row at that! It was a stellar way to finally say "fuck you" to Covid.
This song sounds like a old elegant oak table that you would find in a thrift shop. The table looks as if it belongs in a castle but here you find it in the middle of a thrift shop. The old rugged carvings make it addicting to look at. You can see it’s life through just one glance at the finished divine stance. It’s the most beautiful, gorgeous, and elegant thing you have ever seen but while also being the most worn, rugged, hard looking thing you have ever seen. You can just feel the presence of home in one piece of wood. That’s the only words I can describe this song as. Weird I know.
When my son was an infant, I used to play this when he would get fussy . That first note would instantly chill him out every time. You could see a peacefulness come over him and it would put him fast asleep. Plus Nels' is Wico's secret weapon. What a talent!
eyes teared up a bit listening to this song on the way home... when Nels starts that tender solo it gets me every time...and the song just has that cozy, hopeful melancholy to it that i love.
Cozy hopeful melancholy PERFECT combo of adjectives 😍😍👌👌that's so perfect. I have listened to this song 1,00000000 times and that's just so fitting of a description
lol not even close. just noodling around in a major key. listen to stuff like Kind of Blue if you want to hear the greatest solos. they tell beautiful and original stories instead of just shredding the same scale patterns we all know.
I've read some stupid shit on YT, but this comment, especially "just noodling around in a major key", probably takes the biscuit..thanks for the informed and enlightening words...staggering.
+inner city unit solo starts off fine enough and then from roughly 3:35-4:10 it's NOODLING AROUND IN A MAJOR KEY until he goes back to the pre-written melodies you'd hear on the record. got nothing against Nels Cline but to call this one of the greatest solos of all time is ignorant and straight up disrespectful. I was in a no-name jazz bar in Brooklyn last month and some random Philly jazz keyboardist played a solo 10x better than this. We were all floored. It annoys me to think of that brilliant guy struggling to make ends meet because armchair music fans like you would rather circle-jerk Wilco. Fuck off.
nah bud that's a strawman argument that has nothing to do with whether this is a genius level solo. you dodge the actual issue and then try to paint me as some disconnected elitist jazz douche? what does that have to do with this guitar solo we're talking about? is it one of the best solos of all time or not? if so why? if not then why are you comparing it to kind of blue? there's a huge leap in quality between those solos and this one. it's not like i'm in some tiny minority of pretentious snobs who would agree with that. i try to break the solo down and explain why i think it's noodling and your entire response is to go on a tirade about how i apparently think people who listen to wilco are "not as good" as people who listen to ornette coleman. what in the actual fuck are you talking about? and i'm not blaming the fans and the bands at all, fuck you for insinuating that. i'm blaming guys like you who take this fucking solo and then take some of the most incredible music in human history and equate them like there isn't a monstrous gulf in between. people read your bullshit and think "yeah, fuck that other guy, this IS one of the best solos of all time" and then stay in this exact box for years and don't get exposed to a shitload of badass music. you can take issue with me not sugarcoating things or whatever but at least some wilco fan can read all this bullshit and think "man that asshole really likes Kind of Blue, i should check it out."
kind of blue is modal, one key is where alot of those tunes reside. they were monster players, granted. somebody blurting out their love of a song and a particular solo, more power to them. you love music, right? then don't bother pissing on another's enjoyment. ya know?
This is what love is for, to be at a place, gorgeous and alone, face to face. With no larger problems that need to be erased and nothing more important than to know someone's listening
Impossible Germany Unlikely Japan Wherever you go Wherever you land I'll say what this means to me I'll do what I can Impossible Germany Unlikely Japan The fundamental problem We all need to face This is important But I know you're not listening Oh I know you're not listening If this was still new to me I wouldn't understand Impossible Germany Unlikely Japan But this is what love is for To be out of place Gorgeous and alone Face to face With no larger problems That need to be erased Nothing more important than to know Someone's listening Now I know You'll be listening
I just saw Wilco in Milwaukee Sunday, June 18, 2017. I only knew their name. Had never heard their music. Knew they had a cult following. And had the opportunity to usher. I'm an old hippie who has heard lots and lots of the best music since my college years in the late 60s. I have been craving the guitar solos of yesteryear. FINALLY! Nels Cline fulfilled that long lost feeling with this stupendous solo. Nels, will you marry me?
In case you don't know what Tim S means check Steely Dan 'Peg' , 'Kid Charlemagne' or 'My Old School'. I've been returning frequently to this solo recently. The SteelyDan ones i've loved for decades.
Nearly four decades of listening to rock music and along comes this. Even by Wilco's usually sky high standards, this is a masterful combination of all the best rock has to offer. Buy this dvd, watch it and considerably enhance your life. Thank you Jeff, Nels, Pat, Glenn, Mikael and John. Please keep sending shivers down my spine.
That solo is wonderful!! The melody devolving into utter chaos while the rest of the band remains perfectly in the pocket, then he perfectly joins them in the most beautiful and musical way! Man!!! You killed it Nels!!!
I am a maniac for Nels Cline. In 2018 saw him in a small venue in Milwaukee doing his jazz stuff. I about lost it. That was about a year after i fell in love with him at a Wilco concert in Milwaukee.
Just saw Wilco in Ottawa, Canada and Tweedy, Nels and the rest of the band are amazing! Blew me away. I had high expectations going into the concert and they far exceeded them. Thanks!
I saw them play Portland, ME couple years ago. I knew this song would hit me hard as it is so connected to a very particular time in my life. I had no idea it would hit this hard. I openly alternated between sobbing and feeling ecstatic. That was a very special experience with people who are very special to me.
Oh, what memories! This is so Quicksilver Messenger Service, John Cipollina is smiling from above! So, so excellent, that ethereal vibrato guitar, and the intricate weaving of the sweet lead guitars, Wilco, you've outdone yourselves!
Agreed!! I'm not saying there's any comparison, but Ryan Adams & The Cardinals were capable of this kind of magic at their peak. The Cardinology Tour was incredible. Live renditions of songs such as Cold Roses would have turned into epic 10 minute jams with multiple guitars playing in harmony. Neal Casal truly was an incredible musician with a very tasteful ear. RIP
John Stirratt is a good bass player. He lays back and plays what needs to be played, and that's it. I think that's part of the reason he's the only member besides Tweedy who's been in the band throughout its entire existence.
@@blindriv3r Yep, Wilco 1.0 was everyone not named Jay from Uncle Tupelo. When Jeff went to rehab, Stirratt ran rehersals and made sure everyone was ready to go. He's Wilco's Little Steven
Evertime this pops up in my recommended I have to watch it. I'm not even a fan, I haven't checked out their music yet, but this song just gets stuck in my head and this performance kicks ass!
"...To be out of place Gorgeous and alone Face to face With no larger problems That need to be erased Nothing more important Than to know someone's listening Now, I know you'll be listening..."
I can't believe that we didn't get a news flash alert or presidential pronouncement the second the video of this song was released. It's absolutely incredible. Makes me love life again.
I have never been a Wilco fan...so this is the first song that resonated with me. The solo is as tasty as a Dairy Queen soft serve on an August afternoon....
Idk if it’s just me but once he breaks into his guitar solo there’s a part where it truly sounds like the guitar is singing “can you tell me right now, you’ll love and you’ll miss me”
vio701able i was actually here, right in front of him in Mobile, AL. This is by far the best live version I’ve ever personally seen. It always made me laugh bc Mobile is such a dinky shit hole. I grew up here, I can say that. But a lot of the guys from MS and LA had their family in the front row and they really went all out for us.
What an utterly amazing song. I'm a huge Wilco fan and while I feel their older work is best, this song would definitely be in my top 10. The guitars are absolutely beautiful and Nels' solo is genius. Great fucking song.
I don’t have much to add to what has been said other than this is one of the absolute best guitar solos/performances I’ve ever heard in my life. I worked in a record store from 1986-2000 and I’ve heard a lot. Nels absolutely killed this on the album and live. So beautiful.
03:14 look at the passion in this man's body language when his playing this music. impossible germany is an absolute phenomenal track and this live version is the cherry on the top!
dude the transition from the guitar solo back into the jam is so fucking awesome. nels literally plays a distorted version of the chords and transitions with the intensity to make a crazy ass mindfuck
Easily one of the best live performances I’ve ever heard in my life. 666 from bon iver at thé npr thing, no quarter at msg, sultans of swing on alchemy, and this
