www.ted.com Erik Johansson creates realistic photos of impossible scenes -- capturing ideas, not moments. In this witty how-to, the Photoshop wizard describes the principles he uses to make these fantastical scenarios come to life, while keeping them visually plausible.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at www.ted.com/tra...

This IS photography. It is a complete creative process. Start to finish. There is nothing easy about what he does. It begins with creation, having an idea, which is something any photographer needs to have the ability to do. Then you have to create the images you will need to put it all together. You have to take the photos before you even get to Photoshop. There is a lot that goes into it. Photo manipulation and compositing images won't work if you don't have an understanding of lighting and gear. Find a commercial ad that doesn't use multiple layers of photos and compositing. Erik is an artist and a photographer. And I appreciate that he is willing to share his knowledge with us. I can appreciate traditional organic photography and art at the same time.

For God sake! "Could be a photographer too" - you have *no* idea of the photography skills it takes to capture the images that were combined into those beautiful masterpieces.Go and take two or more photos that you can stitch together with the exact same light and the exact same perspective... GOOD luck! This guy is technically *amazing* in photography and any pro can tell...

It is necessary to point out that he's not doing something different, as he says. I read/viewed various photography magazines during the 1980's; they were the film days, although by '87 a digital future was being spoken about. So, not to take anything away from those 80's film guys... they were doing the kind of work Erik is now doing, back then... and in the darkroom! (pre-photoshop). Finally, I do really enjoy Erik Johansson's work. It's really good.

Erik's work is amazing! His seamless imagery shows beautiful skill and makes your thoughts linger. I just love Ted Talks! I think a lot of the people who have made negative comments and are saying he is not a photographer should do a little research into photo history. As others have already said photographers have been manipulating their images from the very beginning, just because he's not doing it in a darkroom and is doing it digitally does not mean he is not classified as a photographer.

The minute someone puts words to what it is they create people feel the need to jump in and tell them what it is or is not. Just because it is not how you do things, how you perceive things, does not mean you are right. Irregardless of the stamp you put on it I think it is good work.

I do find these images interesting. I only do real photography. I find art in nature, capture it and dont change anything about it, other than when i do black and white. On a shoot, i generally take upwards of 2,000 photos in a 6 hour time slot, then go and pick out 100 of the best natural captures. Some say, that picture is too bright or too dark, too many shadows, why did you do that? I say, thats how it was. Pictures that have natural beauty are the most captivating. A lot of ppl claim they dont like some photo but stare at it for a long time. I find that intriguing

Fully agree mattbakerg. Just like people do not think that HDR photography is real photography. It is all about composition and capturing the right feel. I have been doing photoshop for almost 20 years and what he has done is amazing. On Erik's blog he shows a time lapse of one of his works "Cut & Fold" and I would like to challenge someone to say that it is "ONLY Photoshop". That piece of art took over 15 effective hours.

Having been into photography for 40 years, and semi-Pro for the last dozen... I *might* have agreed with you previously. However, even in the old days of dark rooms we *tweaked* and *post processed* our work. Changed angles, saturation, colors, temperatures, effects, made compilations, changes to what was (or wasn't) in a given photo. Even Ansel Adams post processed the heck out of his work. Just a thought... he's 'compiling his reality.' We either enjoy it or not.

I agree, it is Graphic design using photography as basis. Their defined differently in qualifications. Also taking still shots is field or studio work where is Graphic design is only a desk based position and is more just a way to get artist into a digital world. Excellent Graphic design by the way.

In filmmaking you use special effects as a tool like he does with his photography.. The story of the movie the actors ( even if they are created by animation ), the composing of scenes and the angle of cameras , the cutting. To tell the story and the world that it takes place in.. this is filmmaking ( and you know what filmmaking is). thats my 2 cents.. this guy does a great job, nothing else than mike said in first place.

This is really cool imagery. Several people are saying its not photography. Photography is art. So what if he's taking multiple images and combining them to make his own image. That is his way of photographic art. For example, not all painting is in oil of landscapes.Painting has many different mediums and subjects. People shot down Warhol and Lichtenstein cuz it wasnt true paintings/art. But look at them now. Photography too has many different looks to it. All the haters need 2 relax.

Photography? No, its digitalised manipulation. Two very different things
@SMGJohn
@SMGJohn 9 лет назад
Andres Bonilla Does not matter how stupidly complicated you want to describe it, we have a word for it. Its called digitalised manipulation, that is what it is and that is what it always will be. Photography means something different. Unless you call a boat for a plane
@SMGJohn
@SMGJohn 9 лет назад
Andres Bonilla So the tiny person, has no argument, has no intellectual capability to debate properly resorts to 'immature' and 'tantrum' followed by describing yourself as a mentally challenged poster for some odd reasons. Weird, well tiny people are odd people. Perhaps its time to grow up, educate yourself a bit. The fact you cannot comprehend what digitalised manipulation, photography manipulation even is says a lot. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo_manipulation You are insecure, read and get wealthy in knowledge.
