Performed by Michael Compitello
Impressions, by Nicolas Martynciow - Mvt. 1
for snare drum and two tom-toms
Sticks: #vfSTG
Tim Genis Signature - General
www.vicfirth.co...
ABOUT THE PIECE:
“This work for side drum and two tom-toms lasts about eight minutes, making it one of the longest pieces ever written for the side drum. The last work of comparable dimensions was Dasselbe ist nicht dasselbe by Nicolas A. Huber, written over ten years ago.
Impressions is in three movements, each of which may be performed separately. It demands a very competent technique, and attempts to explore new avenues, since side drum composition, with a few exceptions, has developed relatively little-hence the use of brushes and playing techniques based on bouncing sticks. The piece is further enhanced by the high and low tom-toms which accompany the side drum.”
ABOUT THE COMPOSER:
Nicolas Martynciow studied percussion with Claude Giot and Philip Drink at the Conservatory de Saint-Etienne, his hometown. After studies with Francis Brana at the Conservatory de Créteil, he entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris in the class of Jacques Delécluse, graduating in 1990 with 1st prizes in percussion and chamber Music.
As percussionist with the Orchestre de Paris, he played under the direction of renowned conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Valery Gergiev, Carlo Maria Giulini, Bernard Haitink, Lorin Maazel, Sir George Priest, and Geog Solti.
As a chamber musician, he performs regularly with Ensemble Carpe Diem (dir:. Jean-Pierre Arnaud), as well as with the Trio Wanderer, Claire Desert, Emmanuel Strausser, Eric Picard, Stephane Laberie, etc.
As a composer, Martynciow's compositions are performed worldwide, and are published by Editions Gerard Billaudot. The founder of l'Association Française pour la Percussion, he was twice editor of the journal Percussion.
Martynciow teaches orchestral percussion at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.
ABOUT THE PERFORMER:
Percussionist Michael Compitello is guided by his passion to create new art through collaborations with composers, performers, actors, and artists in all mediums. Currently Director of Percussion at Cornell University, Michael has worked with composers David Lang, John Luther Adams, Martin Bresnick, Helmut Lachenmann, Alejandro Viñao, and Marc Applebaum on premieres and performances of new works, and has performed as a chamber musician and soloist in diverse locations such as the Darmstadt Summer Course, the LA Phil’s Green Umbrella Series, the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and the Kurt Weill Festival.
With his cello/percussion duo New Morse Code, Michael uses the unexpected range and unique sonic world of cello and percussion to catalyze and champion the compelling works of young composers. Through long-term collaboration close work with colleagues such as pianist-composer Paul Kerekes, steel pan virtuoso and composer Andy Akiho, Hawaiian composer and visual artist Tonia Ko, and Pulitzer Prize-winning violinist/vocalist/composer Caroline Shaw, New Morse Code generates a singular and personal repertoire which reflects both their friends’ creative voices and their own perspectives.
Michael’s interest in interdisciplinary collaboration has led to performances at the Yale Repertory Theater and the Yale Cabaret, where he helped create “Basement Hades,” a multimedia musical drama featuring his duo New Morse Code, composer Dan Schlosberg, students from the Yale School of Drama, and director Ethan Heard.
From 2009 to 2010, Michael performed and studied contemporary chamber music with the Ensemble Modern and the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt, Germany on a Fulbright Grant from the US Department of State.

Beautiful and delicate control. Drums can be so gorgeous and rich in lower dynamics.

Oh yes, I just got a good look at your sticks and they are Vic Firth. I doubt it that being in a Vic Firth Warehouse, you would be using anything other than Vic Firth Sticks. Thanks and God Bless.

That was an awesome example of "Control and Technique" for sure. Amazing as those really low volume levels. What kind of sticks is he using? That's the kind of stick I would love to have for practicing on my practice pad, and eKit.
