But if you feel you are addicted to social media etc., then maybe you could try knowingly to shorten the time you spend on your laptop, phone, or any screen that makes you anxious. This is not a good advice on my part, because I regularly fail to do it myself.

Phil is great! I’ve been watching John for a long time now, and I like the solo videos because they are not only educational, I can also fall asleep to them. When Phil interviews John it’s a great video but it doesn’t have the same ASMR effect!

@@ho5286 Feel for you my friend, it would've been our girl's 13th birthday at the start of the week... a lot of people don't understand it's a family member you lose when your dog dies, my little brother was 10 and a half when we got her, he's now 22 and 8 months so she was around for more than half of his life, what makes her death so hard isn't just losing her but feels as though such a massive chapter in all of our lives has come to a close. Luckily I've grown up and now live with my fiancee and we have our own 4 year old black lab who's been a real comfort to me, still hurts like nothing I've ever felt before though.

If you want to learn about John and his message it would probably help if you started with his early videos made a few years ago. I can see where this video would seem somewhat random. It has bits of teachings he has talked about much more directly in other videos.

There are different type of prayer: petitionary (asking God to help you), intercessory (asking God to help others), and contemplative (meditative prayer). There is the World Centre for Christian Meditation, which is a place to practice and learn about contemplative prayer. An example is the Jesus prayer (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy upon me a sinner) which can be repeated as a mantra - this is a form of contemplative prayer, often mentioned by John. Contemplative prayer was much practiced in the monasteries but the Reformation led to many of them being destroyed and now there is less emphasis on contemplative prayer in the Western churches, but it is a strong element of the Eastern Orthodox Church in Russia and elsewhere, and I think that it was during John's time in Russia that he began using the Jesus Prayer. There are some deep works of contemplative prayer from Medieval Christian Mystics such as Dark Night of the Soul by St John of the Cross, The Interior Castle by Teresa of Ávila, and the Cloud of Unknowing (anonymous, but thought to be written by a cloistered monk). So there is a rich contemplative tradition in Christianity and The World Centre for Christian Meditation is reviving and building upon this. So you can see that John's immersion in meditation is not inconsistent with his connection to Christianity and scripture (the aforementioned Christian Mystics were very aware of scripture, and you can find scriptural quotes in their work) .

@@kevries147 First off all you need to accept that this 'depression' lives in your mind and can be defeated by establishing control over your own mind, which results in peace. That is what meditation is about. Self-control. Has nothing to do with 'oppression' or any of the absurd nonsense you've stated. As for worship, that is John's personal matter and the people who're around him voluntarily came to hear his words. Must have a rough life when you feel the necessity to hate on an old man on the internet who's only trying to offer guidance to people in need...

Thanks for asking - John is doing fine. He has received 20 visitors in the past month and is currently at a conference in Yorkshire. Phil
